or either Earl Watson or Doug Christie
I say this because all three of them have proven to be among the elite, available(trade interest, free agency, amnesty clause) defensive point guards in the league. If we don't get one of those three, then every player below will subsequently "give it" to the Lakers on a nightly basis...i.e. 15ppg/7.0apg
Western Conference Starting Point Guards
Luke Ridnour
Tony Parker
Steve Nash
Baron Davis
Mike Bibby
Andre Miller
Jason Williams
Chris Paul
Jason Terry
Shaun Livingston
Im confident Banks can be the best defensive PG in the league, while Earl has earned my respect with all the good stories i have heard about him. Christie i believe is older than Antonio Daniels, regardless, I believe he's a wayyy better defensive player. I'm just not sold on AD. What has he done? |

that may be one of the harder polls to answer. I agree that Christie would be an easier and cheaper option. Thing is although that's true, I don't think it'd be a good enough option. I kind of wander how his legs will hold up against quick guards, plus his shooting has tailed off. I guess the PG talk is kind of a mess and I'll be happy when it's over.
Should the Lakers go after Banks? Yeah but what will it cost them? If Boston would take Cook it makes sense (still don't know who's interested but Phil said someone is). I agree with you on Banks defensively, he could turn out like a Greg Anthony type player. Thing is the more I think of it, the ideal situation that could have a slight chance of playing out is...Rose/Banks. Obviously Jalen starts, and when they need to lock down a top notch PG they could have Banks and give Jalen or even Kobe a short rest. Even if Banks flops, he's got a team option and an affordable qualifying offer (if he pans out) the year after that.
The big knock on Banks you hear is he can't lead an NBA team at point. That's not a problem in the triangle. LA has been longing for a defensive stopper on the perimeter, so the thought of Banks/Kobe/Odom/Brown/Mihm defensively sounds solid. Throw in the pipedream of Ratliff in there and you have the makings of a great half court defense.
In a roundabout way, I'm saying I'd take Banks as the backup point, and if his outside shooting continues to improve he could end up being more. I know everyone says as long as the Lakers have Kobe (and Odom) they'll have no problems offensively. I think that's crap to say the least. If Kobe will operate more in the post (of the triple-post offense) and Odom initiates from the wing, both of them will recieve more pressure in thoes situations. Although Odom is best taking his man off the dribble, I tend to wonder if the Lakers will use both of them more in the post if Kwame and Mihm don't produce enough inside. In that case, you absolutely NEED solid outside shooting from the point spot. Things will get more congested inside and they'll need someone to break that up. |

Marcus Banks is among the elite now? After 2 seasons he hasn't done anything. There's too sure-players out there that we could go after instead of trying to get Banks again. |

Elite? No. Solid defensive backup? Yes. I by NO means would let him walk in with the starting job, but if his shooting were to improve he could become a starter in the future. He could come cheap and this leaves your MLE still for a starter (Rose/AD/ect..) Sasha could ease into the backup SG role and play spairingly and you get better production overall at the point. |

He'd be wonderful off the bench, but nothing more than that. _________________ Westside |

he is a one of the best defensive PGs in the league. So I guess that would male him elite (defensively) |

If the Lakers could get Banks for any combination of Cook, Walton, or Sasha, I say go for it. |

the best case would be getting AD with the MLE and Banks backing him up
maybe they will take the Miami Pick and filler |

I'm getting tired of hearing about Banks. I wouldn't mind Watson. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that." ~~Martin Luther King Jr.~~ |

We know Watson can run an offense. We know Watson is a good defender. He's not as tall as Phil would like for his starter, but Watson would do well in the small guard role. We aren't as sure about Banks running an offense. Banks has had more time to start showing his potential. So far, he doesn't look like a lottery pick. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate.
