I've been getting alot of Moe Greene clips in my youtube feed, so I watched it and it's bringing back questions I've always had.
1) What's the backstory of Moe Greene? He went to Vegas to open a casino, with backing from the Corleone family?
2) Michael says he wants to buy Moe Greene out? This sounds like they're 50/50 partners or something?
3) Moe Greene brings up the Molinari family and Barzini. What's the connection?
4) Moe Greene says he can make a deal with Barzini and keep his casino. This makes me feel like the Corleone family doesn't have a share in his casino?
5) Is Moe Greene connected to the mob? Or is he an independent? Seems like he's connected to Barzini, Molinari, Hyman Roth, Corleone family, but what's the relationship? Is he just an independent?
6) What muscle does Moe Greene have to feel he can talk to Michael that way?
7) After Michael kills Moe Greene, the Corleone family takes over the casino. Does this mean they bought him out or they just automatically assumed his shares? If so, then they should have killed him regardless instead of trying to buy him out.
8) What was the point of having Fredo work for Moe Greene? Was it just to train him or just to give him a job? Or was he there to keep an eye on Moe Greene?

Moe was a childhood friend of Hiram Roth and a lieutenant in his army. He had been an executioner for Murder Inc. Don Corleone bankrolled Greene’s Las Vegas casino. He took in Fredo to keep him safe from the war of the 5 families. He spoke like he did to Michael because after Vito was shot and in the hospital he gambled that Braziini would defeat the Corleone family. The Corleone family basically paid for the casino and took over once Greene’s gamble resulted in his murder. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

I'm getting a lot of Godfodder, too. The young crowd is starting to watch it for the first time and posting reaction vids to it on YT. Dunno if that has anything to do with it. Maybe dusted it off a little, getting more people searching for it.
I suspect a job for Fredo. And Fredo messed that one up, too, so Moe had to straighten him out!... He was bangin cocktail waitresses two at a time!... Players couldn't get a drink at the table!... What's wrong with you?!...
Oops, sorry, I got into the Moe Greene feels for a second.
I have never seen a Taika Waititi film I have liked. I have never seen a Taika Waititi film I have hated.
His output is fine.
Finally watched JoJo Rabbit . Bad movie. Hot Shots Part Deux has more to say about war and is much funnier.
JoJo Rabbit is possibly in my top 10 favorite movies.
I know it has a devoted fan base. Give Seven Beauties a shot one of these days for a comparison - it's among my 25 or so favorite movies. _________________ Under New Management
Need recommendation on good natural disaster movie.
Steamboat Bill, Jr.
It Happened One Night
Threads
Miracle Mile
Titanic
War of the Worlds (Spielberg)
Melancholia
Some favorites of mine. And I have a soft spot for Roland Emmerich disaster movies like Independence Day and 2012. _________________ Under New Management

The post belongs in both threads. I think it goes from inoffensively mediocre to bad movie given the twee manner in which it attempts to engage with its subject matter - Waititi settles on the intellectual bankruptcy of Nazism while pussyfooting around the social, material, and human horrors of the Nazi fascist regime knowing that his audience will color in the darker stuff so he can dabble in the lighter stuff (which is never particularly funny).
I pose to you, as well, the Seven Beauties challenge: why do you think JoJo Rabbit is a better, funnier film than Lina's masterpiece? They're both Academy Award nominated anti-fascist satires - how do they compare to you? _________________ Under New Management

I'm way behind on 2020 releases, but my top five (all great) movies released this decade so far:
Memoria
West Side Story
The Card Counter
Licorice Pizza
Possesser
reminds me I need to catch Memoria before it leaves my area. Won't come to streaming/dvd, so gotta shoot my shot.
My first Joe film on a big screen so I was blown away by being trapped by his vision on 35mm without distraction or escape, and it's both a step forward for him as a filmmaker and his most accessible movie to Western audiences. You may not love it as much as I do, but it is a rare experience. _________________ Under New Management
Anyone catch The Northman? Another Robert Eggars "wtf did I just watch?" film. Great performances by a stellar cast.
I'm a fan. For all his film canon and classical historical influences - which I admire in his work - Eggers still knows how to make gnarly fun movies involving drunken lighthouse keepers out-farting each other or Vikings headbutting one another to death. Best Kidman performance in at least a decade.
The Northman - I will rewatch this several more times in my life
Ambulance - I'll probably watch it again at some point, as much for Gyllenhaal's gonzo performance as the Bayhem
Everything Everywhere All at Once - What if an inspirational quote poster dressed up as a sci-fi martial arts movie? I admire the ambition, the execution of its central concept, most of the performances, and a few action set pieces, but I will go out of my way to avoid watching this for the rest of my life _________________ Under New Management

The best way to know Everything Everywhere All at Once is lazily queer-coded is that the Russo brothers produced it. The second best way...

HA! Interesting how you changed the narrative from a piece of crap '90's parody film with Charlie Sheen to a '70's Italian film nominated for multiple Oscars and starring Giancarlo Giannini.
There was plenty of darkness in Jojo, and brutally so. As for the humor, if you think that an entirely unoriginal sequel to an equally unoriginal spoof film was more clever and insightful than Rabbit, more power to ya. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

I finally watched GvS' Elephant and it is pure genius, one of the greatest anti-violence movies about violence ever made. _________________ Under New Management

The Devil You Know.
Once incarcerated Marcus Cowans (Omar Epps) is trying to turn over a new leaf with the support of his loving family. He suspects his brother may have been involved in a hideous crime. When the truth is revealed it becomes a what to do. The ending left me in a what does the future hold state of mind. Scale 1 to 10 I give it 7.9

Do you think I gotta watch it in theaters or will a large TV + epic sound system approximate the cinematic justice it deserves.
You definitely need a good sound system. I'd estimate watching it at home on a good high def big screen TV with surround sound would give you about 85% of the cinematic experience. _________________ Not a legend

Thanks EB. Ended up catching it last night at a theater. I think it's my least favorite Eggers thus far (Lighthouse is my favorite), but still a good movie. If I were to be a bit harsher, there were a few laugh out loud moments for me that I am positive Eggers did not intend to make me laugh, and the acting felt like the worst across his films. I think I would have preferred Nordic/Icelandic actors that had a facility with english, as opposed to popular faces attempting a Nordic-infused english.
But the action was very well shot and well edited, particularly the final scene. Really enjoyed that, as too many action scenes now-a-days prefer a schizophrenic, almost confused cutting style that leaves me with a bit of a headache.
My guess is there is a directors cut out there that I'd probably prefer, as it seems Eggers cut back on the more outré elements to make the film more palatable for 'mainstream' audiences.
