The NBA gig was just a cover for this Accountant, who was running the marijuana world with impunity. Now they got him. Whoever busted him played chess, not checkers.

Jason Statham will play him in the movie adaptation.*

I remember reading in Rolling Stone in the 60's that some poor guy got 20 years when caught with one joint in Texas.

Typically these type of urban legend stories have a bit more depth and detail to them. Even in Texas in the 60s.
Maybe you can share the details when you remember all of them.

There wasn't even a lyric about that urban legend in CCR's Midnight Special. _________________GOAT MAGIC REEL

I don 't remember the details of the Texas case however per Wikipedia
"Prior to Texas passing House Bill 447 Texas had the harshest cannabis laws of any state in the nation, with possession of any amount classified as a felony offense punishable by two years to life in prison."
So my guess is that a bunch of Texans (who didn't have politically important families) got caught on the wrong side of this one.
Somewhat related I worked in Saudi Arabia in 1976 and the penalty for possession any detectable amount of hash was up to 20 years in a Saudi Jail which would make the Parchman Farm prison look like Club Med. In 1978 I worked in Iran when the Shah was still in charge. The penalty for a being caught with "a personal amount" of hash was a small fine. I believe a personal amount was defined as a couple of ounces.
