The Boston Celtics came back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Detroit Pistons 88-85 on the final day of the Toshiba Vegas Summer League. Boston evened the score at 81-81 with 2:37 remaining after trailing the majority of the game. Both teams took turns with the lead, but Rajon Rondo put Boston up for good when he nailed a three-pointer from the right elbow with 25-seconds remaining.

Detroit held an eight-point edge (22-14) after the first quarter of play and built it up to 15 at the half. The Celtics put up 27 points in each the third and fourth quarters and held the Pistons to 14 in the final period for their come back win.

Ryan Gomes pulled Boston even with 2:37 remaining in the game at 81-81. Gerald Green gave Boston the lead at the 2:03 mark on a goaltending field goal. Detroit's Cheikh Samb knotted the score at 83-83 on a field goal with 1:48 remaining. Alex Acker drained two free throws to give the Pistons their final lead, 85-83, at the 58-second mark. The lead was short-lived as Rondo's three swung the momentum to Boston in the final seconds. Gerald Green gave Boston a three-point lead when he connected on both of his free throws with four-seconds left.

Allan Ray led all scorers with his 26 points (9-18 FG, 6-6 FT) in victory. Green threw down 22 and was followed by double-digit efforts from Rondo (14) and Akin Akingbala (10).

Game Recap - Minnesota Timberwolves vs. New Orleans Hornets

MVP Foye leads T-Wolves over Hornets

Dennis Rogers
drogers [AT] vegassummerleague.com

July 14, 2006

If there is one player in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League that has stood out more than others, it is Minnesotas Randy Foye. Foye, the seventh overall pick in the draft, shined once again, pouring in 19 points (6-12 FG) in a 73-65 win over the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets.

The Hornets cut the Timberwolves lead to five on many occasions late in the fourth, the last time with 1:00 minute left in the game, when Cedric Simmons hit one of two free throws. A follow put back by Wolciech Barycz stretched the lead to seven for Minnesota and the eventual eight point win.

In addition to Foyes game-high 19 points, Bracey Wright added 18 points (6-13 FG) and five rebounds. Barycz chipped in with 11 points (4-6 FG).

Marcus Fizer, who had a solid TVSL, had a team-high 17 points (6-11 FG, 5-5 FT) and nine rebounds. 15th overall pick Cedric Simmons was one point shy of a double-double, finishing with nine points (2-8 FG) and 12 rebounds.

Minnesota finished the game shooting 45 percent (27-60 FG), while New Orleans/Oklahoma City shot 34 percent (20-59 FG).

Foye averaged 24.8 points per game in the five Timberwolves contests, including a 30 point outing against the Phoenix Suns. Each game, Foye led the Timberwolves offense with the speed and control of an experienced point guard. He was able to drive to the basket at ease, using his powerful frame to initiate contact.

The Timberwolves ended league play with a 3-2 record. Wright ended play with a 16.4 scoring average through five games.

The Hornets end TVSL action with a 1-4 record. Hilton Armstrong averaged 12.7 points and 6.3 rebounds in three games for the Hornets, while Brandon Bass averaged 9.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in three games.

News and Notes: Hornets rookie of the year Chris Paul sat with the team on the bench, while Hornets owner George Shinn was courtside&Armstrong did not play for the Hornets due to a sore left groin&Foye was awarded the TVSL MVP trophy after the game.
