One of the things I most enjoy about the NBA draft is interacting with other fans; getting their thoughts on how they can make the team better.
I made the List of players ranked in order, the Experimental list, so that it acts as a check off list as the draft begins. Whoever is left is the top, IMHO, is the BPA.
I've been getting a lot of interaction on twitter, if the Indiana trade were to go through, about who to pick at #23.
By Draftexpress mock. Ledo, Franklin, Canaan, Green
By NBADraft mock. Franklin, Canaan, Rice, Green
I am going by guards and wings this draft because that is where the talent depth by position is. Drafting at other positions at that point may not lead to a player who will be as successful in the NBA. _________________ Resident Car Nut.
1Canaan -- NBA ready
2Ledo -- will be really good in a couple years
3Franklin -- nice all around game, but I don't see star potential
4Green -- Average NBA'r
5Rice -- One trick pony, could develop

Ledo - Most upside of the group of players. One on one ability, solid midrange shot out to 3pt. land. Solid athlete, quick, but not explosive. Creates shots off the dribble by being shifty, not explosive to the hoop. Enough physical tools to be a solid defender.
Franklin - Gerald Wallace/Eddie Jones type. Think he's slipping down the draft because of extensive time playing PF at SDSU. Fair jumper, but especially aggressive on defense with his motor. Role player-type offense; midrange jumpshot, good finisher, not exactly a one-on-one creator. Competitive nature, defensive demeanor are great. TO prone. Hands. Not. But, I cannot ignore a guy who gets emotionally fired up, can get the team more involved with his activity.
Canaan - Most NBA ready because he's not only seasoned with NCAA time, but has played 37mpg as a #1 option, creating his own shot. Played against lesser comp. Tank. Great jumpshot from midrange to extended 3pt. line. Average finisher, but able to change directions twice on a drive. Floater, layup, lefty, pull up, spot up both sides of the floor. Lapses defensively, but I think it's due to considerable effort on offense. Needs to work on playmaking skill, especially Pick and Roll situations.
Green - A bit light, but compares himself to Devin Green. Self-made scorer, one of the NCAA's best. Underrated in terms of quickness and speed, can fly out in transition, and has a few isolation moves from the perimeter to set up his jumpshot. Will get pushed around a bit, but makes up for it with excellent PG size; 6'3" height, 6'7" wingspan. Better in PnR than Canaan. Has all the physical tools to force turnovers.
Rice - Slightly above average athlete. Good, not phenomenal shooter like his father. NBDL statistics are overinflated. Good NBA size, could really use better discipline on both ends of the floor. Plays like Glen Rice from the perimeter with his J, off of screens, but doesn't have the post game or post base. _________________ Resident Car Nut.
Can flat out shoot the ball but he's also a scorer. Good athlete, good size, great handle for a 2. Has all the tools you would want from a nba calibur player. His only real weaknesses are character flaws but I'd roll the dice on him anyway, he's definitely a sleeper in this draft.

NBADraft.net mock
Myck Kabongo, Mike Muscala, Alex Abrines, Peyton Siva, Ray McCallum, Nemanja Nedovic.
Draftexpress mock
Solomon Hill, James Ennis, Peyton Siva, Myck Kabongo, BJ Young
Most preferred of those names in order
Nemanja Nedovic
Solomon Hill
Alex Abrines
Mike Muscala
James Ennis
Peyton Siva
BJ Young
Myck Kabongo
Ray McCallum _________________ Resident Car Nut.
This is a very tough draft to project. I'd bite the bullet on immediate bench needs and draft the best clay. Ideally someone we can keep off the roster in 2014 (or even 2015 if we rollover) which would allow the draftee to develop in Europe. I'm thinking Alex Abrines though draftexpress has him going early in the second round (nbadraft has him going after our pick). He's just a skinny 19 year old with good instincts so he can easily stashed and ignored for two, maybe three seasons. By the time the Laker pick is announced, there's a good chance that the bodies remaining will never make it out of training camp... so much sure your pick is Euro friendly and won't try to report.

I'm curious Mike, why put Young over Kabongo?
Something I learned after covering this for years. To be a good PG, it isn't about passing ability all the time, but rather, just being able to get past your first defender, and then make a decision.
BJ Young has elite PG size, quickness, and speed. I believe he can recapture his jumpshot. What can't be taught is his energy to get out in transition and put defenses on their heels.
If he can get by his first defender, and then learn to make a decision when the 2nd defender approaches; e.g. change direction, accelerate to the rim, or hit the open man, then the rest is history.
But in terms of physical tools, they're there. What I'm not clear of is his work ethic or his mental makeup to know how hard it is to get there. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

I like Abrines, but I also think Nemanja has so much athletic upside and a foundation of triple threat skills, it's difficult to ignore. Nedovic is a bit of a project in that sense, but he's athletic and aggressive to the rim with good shot form; and learning to shoot in spot up and off the dribble situations. That's enough for me that late in the draft. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Kabongo has size and speed too, is the difference that Kabongo has never shown a jump shot?

Agreed Kabongo has the size. Think BJ Young has an extra gear in terms of quickness and speed. Kabongo is quite TO prone.
The J can always big fixed the easiest. That's not it.
BJ Young is almost Dwyane Wade size, almost to the wingspan.
Someone that aren't mocked right now.....Seth Curry!!!
Curry was easily the best shooter in the nation in this past college season.
Yes, he lacks to the size to play 2 guard and lacks the PG skills his brother has. However, he can still be a 3pt specialist at the 1 position imo. It's not lack Fisher had the PG skills, we just need him Seth to shoot and hopefully develops some PG skills soon.

According to DX mock, in order, I go:
Goodwin, Kabongo, Siva, Thomas, Southerland, in that order.
Southerland most polished, Goodwin most raw potential, Kabongo most well-rounded.
According to NBAdraft.net mock, in order, I go:
Nedovic, Hill, Kabongo, Muscala, Abrines, Siva.
Nedovic, most raw athletic talent, Hill/Muscala most well-rounded, Kabongo, good overall, Abrines needs strength, but a shooter with high effort D, and Siva, the DJ Augustin w/IQ and better J. _________________ Resident Car Nut.
Doesn't take into account team culture fostering growth and player personalities.
it's based on what they've proven they can do through college/europe production rather than hoping they end up on the austin toros and turn into perfect subservient all-rounders for Pop. they were pretty wrong on drummond last year, said he'd be a bust and he turned out to be the most productive and efficient rookie(in terms of rates, since playing time was here and there), but that was mostly cause his effort in college was jsut different, along with a diff environment, so you're correct there. there are only a few players on there with bust status that i disagree on(jean-charles, snell, etc.)
i wonder if carrick felix will be around for that 48th pick. a nice athletic swingman. great rebounder. bodyfat at the combine was something stunted like less than 4% so you know he's a freak who can probably become a great perimeter defender

Except Felix isn't quick or fast, just jumps well. _________________ Resident Car Nut.
