Exactly. A name he gave himself (not even an original one), but you buy it. Sorry, but the confluence of his career and MTV made him. If Thriller comes out a couple years earlier or later, MJ is just that former child musician that had that one pretty good album.
One can argue that the phenomenon of tabloid journalism also fueled his career. |

I gotta agree with 24. When was the last time MJ made a good hit song? |
when was the last time Michael Jordan had a good game? |
He's retired. There's a difference. If Jackson had retired long before his troubles, say 1995, he'd be more deified. |
MJ is retired. He hasn't made anything in a decade. and he lost his freaking mind. still his catalog speaks for itself. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

Paul McCartney is still out there making music. So are we going to call the Beatles and Wings overrated?
I had time to think about it, and while I love Led Zeppelin, I can see why I would call them overrated. Hell, they stole all their music. That could conceivably make them overrated. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

Not really, unless overproduced, vapid pop is your thing. That was always my complaint with Michael: Terrific performer, lots of production value, nothing to say... _________________ “We must always take sides. But to say you only see them mention The Chronic IS doing him a discredit because Dre is more than The Chronic. Even against his peers, he's head and shoulders above them.
And you an't really compare NWA's raps to what we hear now because hip hop was still finding its way back then. They were pioneers and that's their contribution...Unfortubately, it ended up being a pretty bad contribution in the end, but they were the first to truly speak about the gang/drug/police life, especially on the west coast. |
See, it's statements like that deem him overrrated in my mind... he's not "head and shoulders above them", IMO.
I disagree with that "hip hop was still finding its way back then"... I would say "hip hop started to lose it's way" (queue Common's I Used To Love H.E.R.). Additionally, I would say Public Enemy was the first to truly speak about the gang (maybe not so much the gang lifestyle (glamorizing it), but black on black crime)/drugs/police brutality. But PE didn't just stop there, they also spoke about enlightenment, uplifting one's self, education, black history (stuff you will not find or learn in your typical suburban high school), having pride in one's self/being proud of what you are, voting, etc. |
Well, in a lot of respected people's opinions he's head and shoulders above the rest.
And Hip Hop was still finding its way in the late 80s. Remember, it wasn't even supposed to last until THEN so there wasn't a lot of stock put into it, even by some of the rappers themselves.
And yeah, you had 2 different viewpoints with PE and NWA:
PE was about the manifested frustrations of racism on Blacks while NWA was the manifested frustrations of racism through higher authority on Blacks. PE was more political while NWA was more street. They weren't THAT much different from the other except one glorified the Black on Black violence and the other worked against it. _________________

^^Maybe I don't know NWA enough, but I find it hard to compare them to PE.
PE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NWA
Another name I will throw out as overrated: Eric Clapton.
And is David Bowie overrated? _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

Obviously you haven't heard Dogg Food, which is quite possibly the best West Coast rap album of the 90's after The Chronic. Besides, Daz and Kurupt are hardly overrated, they are hardly even spoken about. |

Well, you can compare them as far as cultural impact goes. Both spoke out about street issues that plague the Black community. _________________

Just to chime in, I don't understand the talk about Michael being overrated. What's next, The Beatles are overrated? Sorry, but "one man's opinion" only goes so far. There is empirical evidence showing the greatness of MJ and The Beatles. It's science. |

I've always seen them as clowns poking fun at rap when they first dropped. Then I think after they realized people were taking their music "serious" they decided to take the game serious. You can tell there were just some Rockers that tried to be funny as Party-rappers. I didn't buy it. _________________

I actually like the Beasties earlier albums the least. But as they progressed they started doing amazing work. No way they're overrated. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |
