We had an up and down game. Davis didn't look good from the beginning and then left with the flu. After that, it was a game of runs. Cleveland had the last big run in the fourth quarter, so the final score made it look like more of a blowout than it was. If Davis hadn't been sick, it was a winnable game.
Lebron really put in an effort on both ends. I worry that he is going to break down if he keeps carrying this much of the load. His threes were spotty, but his midrange game was clicking. Cleveland seemed to focus its defense on Lebron after Davis went out, so he didn't take as many shots as usual. He passed out a lot to our shooters, who had an ice cold night.
Without Davis (and even before he left the game), we were getting torched in the paint. Lebron played the center role on defense a lot and was fairly effective at times. He had 17 rebounds, but he isn't a rim protector and isn't as quick as Davis. Thomas Bryant had a pretty good game, but he's not a rim protector. Damian Jones played, too, but had little impact. Without Davis, Mitchell just killed us on drives to the rim in the second half. I don't know what the points-in-the-paint stat looked like, but it must have been ugly.
Westbrook struggled at first. He kept getting into situations where he was poised to set up someone for a shot, but Davis was gone. As the game progressed, Westbrook found his mojo. Schroder also had a strong game.
In general, our shooters were AWOL. Reaves was poor. He had a couple of his typical plays where he suckers the defender into a cheap foul, but otherwise he contributed nothing on offense and got torched a few times on defense. Walker and Brown had moments, but were largely ineffective. Beverley was horrible on offense, but at least was his usual pest-like self on defense. _________________ Internet Argument Resolved |

Role players fought hard, the whole team did. Their star just outshined our stars closing the 4th at home turf. Good effort, dust it off, next |

This was going to be a tough game, even with AD healthy. With him sick? Massive disadvantage to the Lakers. So, knowing that, I'm not going to be too hard on anyone. Missing the key cog, and best player, on such short notice...these things happen, unfortunately.
The team as a whole fought hard in this game. There were times you thought the combo of Mitchell and Garland would push this game out of reach, early. But, the Lakers would find just enough on offense, and defense, to scrap back into the game. In the first 3 quarters, our guys played fairly well, given the circumstances.
Schroder did a good job of penetrating and making scores, or passes when the defense collapsed. Lonnie, though is shot was off, was his usual athletic self going to the rim, for a few scores. Bryant was very productive, with increased minutes. Troy was nice, as well. And, Damion did not hurt us.
Except for a few nice baskets, here and there, Reaves has a subpar game offensively. Defensively, he was having a hard time navigating through the Cavs PnR offense. Bev hit a 3, made a couple free throws. Other than that, he had no impact on the game.
Russ was his usual energetic self. This was one of his better offensive games, taking advantage of the Cavs in the paint, with his speed and strength. LeBron had a good mid-range game going, but shot poorly from three (as did the the team as a whole). In the 4th, with the game being close, it essentially became Mitchell, vs LeBron. Mitchell prevailed. But, at the respective stages of their careers, Mitchell is the superior scorer. LeBron played well, in this game. But, he can't be expected to carry teams, anymore. That's where Ham comes in.
Ham is a rooking HC, so he's learning, and I understand this. That said, there were too many of those stale iso moments, especially in the 4th. Most led by LeBron. This is where Ham has got to be THE COACH. He's going t have to get movement back into the offense, and put players in positions where they can succeed. Lately he's been riding this AD hot streak, and the team game slipped away. Now, with AD out, this will be a test for Ham's ability to coach. Also, a test for LeBron, on trusting others enough to let them grow, win or lose. We'll see. _________________ ZOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Lebron played the entire 4th before game was out of reach, that was far from ideal. going with him at center is even worse, but probably wouldn't mattered. Ham needs to make sure a big is on the court at all times. |

I saw you say this in the game thread and it's quite puzzling. LeBron had one shot attempt in the 4Q, and rarely brought the ball up. He was setting crappy screens and standing in the corner for most of those minutes lol. Relative to the Pacers game, his trust level was as high as I've ever seen it.
Agree with everything else, just want to make sure we're watching the same game. |

Apologies. I should have clarified. My criticism of LeBron, and Ham's approach to our 4th quarter offense, was our inability to put people in the proper places, on offense. LeBron was on the perimeter, too much. Given his current physical abilities, he's best used initiating offense, closer to the basket. High/low post actions. Especially with AD out, and no other significant post threat on offense. That goes double, when his midrange is going, and his long range is not.
LeBron's screen/pick game has never been good. But, that's more about effort, than ability. Also, giving more consistent effort on defense. When LeBron loses interest, he tends to just "float". But, to be fair, LeBron should not be playing 35+ minutes a game. That's too much for him. Which goes back to Ham having to have a conversation with LeBron. Ergo, at a potentially pivotal moment, with AD out, will LeBron make the necessary adjustments to win? Will Ham make the necessary coaching adjustments, as well? Making sure LeBron stays engaged, and properly rested. I sincerely hope so. _________________ ZOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! |
