The smart move would have been to re-sign with Toronto for a year, win the championship again, and THEN bolt to the Clippers as the league’s biggest winner. Now that one championship just looks like a fluke.
He probably thought getting arguably the luckiest bounce in nba history wouldn’t happen again.
Not to mention having his Finals opponent lose two of their top three players to injury.
The Heat lost 2 of their best players in the Finals Bubble. The 5th seed. Injuries happen in the playoffs and every post season, you can write up all the "what ifs" you want but Toronto and Lakers are legit Champs no matter the circumstances...
Ballmer was quoted as saying "If the other guys don't like it" in terms of the new arena and all that, as if Laker fans are jealous or something.
Dude, LMAO.
17-0.
Hell, 1-0 just in your timeline. 7 years. The Lakers were at their lowest point when Ballmer took over, lost their franchise icon to retirement, rebuild, made a few big mistakes, recovered and won a ring within the 7 years Ballzy has had the team.
And the talent Ballzy has had?
Kawhi
PG
CP3
DeAndre
Blake
All all-stars in their time with the Clippers.
I find it comical he thinks the Lakers are worried about the Clippers. It's good for the Clippers, this new arena and all that. I understand his brand identity goals and all that. Good for them. However Lakers fans for the most part are not threatened by this team just because they got a 2B new arena.
The guy is something. I will leave it at that. 7 years, and no title, Jeannie and Rob win one in 3 years together and yet we are threatened. Ok, dude.
Way to alienate LA fans, Ballmer should shut up and hire a new Clippers marketing team. Like any opponent your going to play, you give due respect to the franchise that's won multiple titles in LA and the fans that follow them. Then you work your ass of on the court to be better.
The Clippers will not win anything until they stop being obsessed about the Lakers and winning LA.
If they worry just about playing basketball and competing with 29 other teams instead of just 1, they might surprise themselves and actually find success, even if it doesn’t mean you are LA’s favorite team.

I don't think anyone is saying they are not. The thought is Kawai left the Raps because he knew getting that bounce probably doesn't happen again, and he would rather go to a franchise that has zero accomplishments and one that buys his family homes on the DL.

Exactly. First players (or rather, EX players ) cannot keep their mouth shut, now the owner. The trash talking might have been acceptable, even fun, had they won the banner. To do it after two consecutive disastrous seasons and a monumental 3-1 failure, and they wonder why sports fans dislike the Clippers.
There is going to be an "empty" feeling in this beautiful new stadium. As in, so big but so empty since NOTHING is hanging from the rafter LOL. _________________ Lakers fan since that Magical day June 25, 1979.

I have a cousin who HATES the Lakers and he told me a few weeks ago as much as he wants to root for the Clippers over us they just find ways to make general NBA fans strongly dislike them.
Just to have all the people that hate the Lakers root for them would be a solid base to start at but somehow the Clippers still find a way to even screw that up

The Clippers have branded themselves as a team that will turn each game into a defensive grindfest, make you play halfcourt basketball and make you win low scoring games.
They have not come anywhere close to living up to their own hype. Their defense is inconsistent and they've had no identity on offense.
When a team does lots of talking and they don't back it up, that makes them even easier to dislike. And the Clippers were already easy to dislike since most of their key guys have been surly and off-putting.
I really disliked the Celtics 10 years ago, but at least I had lots of respect for them because they had a strong identity and they backed up their talk.
Several posters above have compared the Lakers/Clippers dynamic to Dodgers/Angels and Rams/Chargers. There is a large difference between these. The Dodgers and Angels are in difference leagues (National vs. American). The Rams and Chargers are in different conferences (National vs. American). Being in different leagues/conferences means that they are not direct rivals like the same Western Division Lakers & Clippers. Now, if they moved the Clippers to a different division--or better yet to the Eastern Conference (ignoring geography, of course)--it would be easier for Lakers fans to ignore the Clippers much like the Angels and Chargers get ignored.

The difference is that the Dodgers, Angels, Rams, and Chargers have all made the finals at some point in their histories. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

Only a fool would draw parallels between those teams and Lakers/Clippers.
Not. Even. In. The. Same. Stratosphere.
There's so many dissimilarities it's downright silly. _________________ KOBE
As I posted, Jeanie’s leaked emails show us how obsessed she has been with Ballmer and their pursuit to build their own arena. We don’t have to speculate on that. And you have been spot on about the advantages of having your own arena. As was done in Brooklyn, surround it with restaurants, hotels and other entertainment venues and you can practically print money. Ballmer might have “had” to buy the Forum to build his arena but that transaction will add to his revenue stream.
Your characterization is off. If you're in a significant business and you discuss your competitors in e-mails it's not "obsession", it's smart business.
Now, if you're out in public and every (bleep) sentence includes some other business entity as Ballmer does... that smacks a helluva lot more than Jeanie's private emails.

So in Kawhi’s own words, he says he took the 4 year deal so that he could try and come back this season.
Sounds like if he took 1+1, he wouldn’t have risk it and come back this season.
he sees that window shrinking and shrinking
He took that 4 year deal because he might not be physically able to play next summer. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns".

Yeah, as much as I dislike the Clips and Kawhi I don't wish bad health to anyone but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him have to retire by his mid 30's tbh unless he takes a massive pay cut and just becomes a load managing low minute closer for a contender but that would be a a lot of ego he'd have to let go. It's crazy because he has the type of game that ages beautifully but not sure his body can handle too many more seasons.

I mean, even Kobe was basically done by 34. A wing retiring in his mid-thirties is common even for someone without a degenerative health issue. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
The sad thing about Ballmer and his Clippers is that they are being run out of downtown Los Angeles because they know they can't develop an identity in Staples Center. Why? Because even though they moved there at the same time as Jim Buss did back in the day, six championships for the Lakers to zero for them during that time is a hard narrative to dismiss.
So now they decide to do what? Move to the only city in the country where they will still be in the shadow of the purple 'n gold who've won six championships in Inglewood as well. Clippers are gonna clip.

I've never lived in Southern California, so the Clippers don't mean much of anything to me. The Clippers are no different from the Suns or the Warriors or the Kings. They're just a divisional opponent. I understand that things look different to those of you who live there. I get it. You probably hear about the Clippers 100x more than I do. If I didn't come to this board, the Clippers would be just another team. From my perspective, the Clippers are just another team with a billionaire owner trying to assemble the right pieces to win a title. Sooner or later, they'll find the winning combination, one way or another. Big deal. But you live in the same fishbowl as the Clippers and their fans, and you have to deal with the media's efforts to create drama. I really do get it.
So from an outsider's perspective, let me say this: Some of you have an unhealthy obsession with the Clippers. I realize that some of you will immediately deny this and will tell me that it's the other way around, that the Clippers are obsessed with the Lakers. These things are not mutually exclusive, and in fact they aren't even inconsistent. Anyway, I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with disliking the Clippers. I'm just saying that some of you seem to be taking this to the point that it's a little creepy.
That's all I have to say about that.
There are maybe 3 people on the planet who are obsessed with the Clippers. None are Lakers fans. _________________ http://chickhearn.ytmnd.com/

Agreed - his game translates well into his 30s. But his particular injuries and history don't point to a long career. Kinda reminds me of Gerald Wallace - a fantastic athlete & defensive player who got a lot of little nicks & dings, then tore a meniscus and was done at 31-32. And with Wallace, it seems like he also fell out of love with the game. I see the same in Kawhi. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns".

The comparison I think of is Brandon Roy. Elite organization leading talent that had his career shortened by degenerative knee issues. The man was just never the same as the injuries and extended time off to “recover” accumulated. Sound familiar?
The Lakers dodged a big one when he chose the clips. So glad they are dealing with his issues. Still remember how most Laker fans just overlooked and dismissed them as the followed his every move waiting for his FA decision.
