Well I saw Tenet and if you were excited by the trailer then you’re gonna love the movie. It definitely lived up to the hype. Inception feels like a rough draft compared to how good this was.
Tenet made $6.7M in its opening weekend. _________________ Under New Management
On the occasion of Brian De Palma's 80th birthday, I would like to reiterate that Carlito's Way is his masterpiece.
That is a brilliant movie.
CW really feels like De Palma working in rhythm with his narrative and characters whereas in other films he often drowned them out with empty flash.
I finally saw Body Double recently and have to admit that I fell in love. It's nasty, silly, over the top parody directed with excessive style and it made me wish De Palma had directed at least one Naked Gun movie.
I'm still missing some biggies - Sisters, Obsession, and Femme Fatale chief among them - but my current De Palma top five is as follows:
1) Carlito's Way
2) Carrie
3) Body Double
4) Hi, Mom!
5) Phantom of the Paradise _________________ Under New Management

Good flick. One of Connery's best performances. _________________ Under New Management
If I were an FX executive, I would simply pass on the pitch to make a tv miniseries out of one of the most iconic, beautiful movies ever made. _________________ Under New Management
Veteran British-French screen actor Michael Lonsdale passed away earlier today aged 87. The headlines around his death all highlight his role as Bond villain Hugo Drax in Moonraker along with late career appearances in movies like Ronin and Munich, but he was a soulful, powerful presence in a some of the greatest French films of the 60s through the 80s like Phantom of Liberty and India Song. One of the all-time great faces in modern cinema.

New Hollywood cinematographer and later 80s Hollywood director Michael Chapman may not be a household name, but his work lensing films like The Last Detail, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and many more was part of an iconic legacy. He passed away today at age 84 and news of his death is just starting to trickle out via social media.
May both men rest in peace. _________________ Under New Management

Police movies
The Bone Collector. Denzel Washington, Angela Jolie, and Queen Latifa. Great detective story. A little gory. Made me flinch squeamish once or twice.
21 Bridges
Black & Blue

The only negative about physical media these days is how many soulless transfers there are on Blu-ray that try to mimic the digital film aesthetic of the moment.
I'm a big fan of Spielberg's unfairly maligned comedy gem 1941, but just try to find it in a digital media transfer that isn't lifeless. So much of the visual pop of the movie was the contrast of its vivid daytime colors and inky nighttime blacks that are now rendered as flat as a blue, teal, and mustard stained Marvel movie backdrop on Blu-ray.
Shout out to boutique labels like Shout Factory. Their transfer of Friedkin's late career action masterpiece To Live and Die in L.A. retains the vibrant color, depth, and grain of film stock as best as possible. If only bigger studios/film distributors cared as much. _________________ Under New Management
My Cousin Vinny: how is a 90s movie made by a for-hire second rate studio director this attractive and almost every straight-to-Netflix comedy these days looks like it was shot in a warehouse on an iPhone? _________________ Under New Management
Four new-ish flicks I haven't yet seen, but made by directors I think are really great, just hit streaming services over the past few days.
Vitalina Varela (2019) - Pedro Costa's latest acquired taste is streaming on Criterion and is one of his best regarded films in years.
Dick Johnson is Dead (2020) - from Kristen Johnson, director of the great Cameraperson, is now streaming on Netflix. Rave reviews for this one.
HBO/HBOMax adds Eliza Hitman's highly regarded Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020) and genius Roberto Minervini's latest docu-fiction What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire? (2018), finally released from festival limbo. _________________ Under New Management

A couple months back I heavily criticized Steven Seagal.
My favorite movie reviewer made a video on Seagal films. Thought it was funny and I should share.

A reminder that one of Edward Yang's many masterpieces The Terrorizers remains available to stream on Amazon Prime. _________________ Under New Management

Quote:
Fortress is a 1985 Australian made-for-TV thriller film directed by Arch Nicholson and written by Everett De Roche, and starring Rachel Ward, based on Gabrielle Lord's 1980 novel the Fortress.
Sally Jones, a teacher, and her students at a small rural school in Australia are kidnapped and held for ransom by a band of violent shotgun-wielding masked thugs wearing Christmas character masks. Held for ransom in a cave, she and the children escape from their captors, are pursued, establish a stronghold, and fight for their lives.
