I am actually re-watching Game of Thrones...I really would prefer to re-watch a great show, than to watch for the first time a crappy one. The quality I watched before was fine, but watching it in full BluRay 1080P quality (i.e. 4 GB per show) is a pleasure. |

I also started two new shows: House of Cards and Ozark. I can't say too much about Ozark, bc I just started it. I'm enjoying HOC though I sadly ran into some season 1 spoilers, bc I googled the character name to see the actor/actress, and well...we all know how autocomplete works.
I also tried to start The West Wing, but something just didn't agree with me. It seemed dated, and just not my style. |

I just finished season two of After Life, Ricky Gervais' Netflix show. The first season begins with a lot of his sharp sardonic humor, mixed in with all the rest, and all the rest is really what the show is about that I don't want to spoil. The second season is more somber and reflective, that plays against the dark mood. It is Brit, with a cast of characters that, mostly, make up a most motley crew, but delightfully so. The show, of course, has his humour (<for the Brits), but it also has a lot of heart. The only problem is that it is too short. |

Thinking of signing up for Showtime to see their new limited series "The Good Lord Bird" with Ethan Hawke as American hero John Brown killing a bunch of slavers: https://twitter.com/Showtime/status/1260256475592536064 _________________ Under New Management |

On my Amazon Prime streaming homepage, I get a link for a month of free Showtime. I'd look there. Binge watch everything you want for a month and move on. The new Penny Dreadful is out and I'm going to sign up as soon as all the episodes are released. _________________ KOBE |

New season of Penny Dreadful has NOTHING in common with the 1st iteration. They pretty much just used that title for name recognition. Just watch the trailer and judge it on that. Some like it. Some don't.
Billions has been in my yearly top 10 since it came out. Solid show from start to most recent. If its the type of subject matter you are in to. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |

Finished up Schitt's Creek. I had mistakenly said it was 5 seasons before, but of course it was six. Just so, so good. The show went out on a high. Seemed like each season got better and better. |

Billions has been a great show. There are some character flaws that seem a bit ham-fisted at times, but overall enjoyable. Giamoti is so good. |

Rank'em: The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad.
It's been years since I've seen Sopranos. Binging the 1st season now. It's been so long, it's almost new watching it. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |

As I have said before, Breaking Bad is the "best" of the three by simple fact that the breadth of its approach to telling is so much more involved and compelling that what The Sopranos and The Wire did.
However, if we are going purely by writing, Simon's shows are better, and The Wire being the better of the two. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

All great, but The Wire > Sopranos > Breaking Bad |
Exactly my order. Gilligan is the most technically creative in how he screens his story, but his story is the weaker of the three. The wire has breathtakingly high aspirations (a meditation on the decay of modern humanity by way of an American city), and the execution of the story and the complexity of even minor characters nails those aspirations, without needing much more than meat and potato delivery (which would likely detract from the narrative). The wire is the great American novel. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. I get where you're coming from. But we aren't talking American novels. We are talking about storytelling in a medium that involves visual and auditory elements as part of the craft. The BB universe does things to drive story that involve imagery, music and even subtleties in color that provide detail and hints to what is going on.
And I don't at all believe Gilligan's storytelling is any weaker even without those elements. Especially when it comes to minor characters. The tertiary characters in Gilligan's world are every bit as interesting and compelling as those in Sopranos, Wire, Treme.
Like I said, if you want to get down to simply the words on the page, or the American Novel approach, Simon is an auteur of few peers. But we aren't reading a script or a novel when it comes to television series. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

I also get where you’re coming from. I’m a huge Michael Mann fan precisely because of the way he uses visual and audio cues in really unique ways to tell his stories, and I’m not knocking Gilligan at all. He’s a far more creative and talented filmmaker than Simon. It’s just that simon’s telling far deeper and more nuanced and important stories, which makes them, in far more straightforward delivery, still greater shows imo. _________________ “We must always take sides.
