"It's not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country any more but a question of when this will happen," Dr Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters.
Public officials do not know if the spread of the virus will be mild or severe, she added, but Americans should prepare for it to disrupt their daily lives.
"We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad," Dr Messonnier said.
i was initially becoming upbeat with the situation starting to calm down in china. but unfortunately the outlook is really scary globally now.
it is looking like it is going to be really bad in korea. they are waiting to test over a thousand people from that cult church. it is also now all over korea partially due to that cult church's trips. so it is in daegu, seoul, busan... are they going to quarantine travelers who recently been to korea as well now?
iran has cases all over as well. one epic center is qom, a well known conservative religious center that may be not be able to handle this type of growing epidemic. not sure if the middle east can limit the spread from iran.
cases in italy are also increasing rapidly. are we going to soon start quarantining travelers from italy? from the eu?
real soon, they are pretty much going to have to shut down international flights if they want to stop the virus from spreading here.
with cases increasing rapidly in multiple countries, are they going to basically shut down cruises all over the world? cruise ships are now the most dangerous places in the world. each ship with potentially hundreds of infected passengers.
it is really scary as it really looks like a pandemic with 20% of sick people being serious cases. that can overwhelm any country. it is time to buy up supplies for 2 months...
my only hope is the warm weather is going to help like it will with sars. june cannot come soon enough...
This is why this virus is destined to be a global pandemic...the symptoms are asymptomatic. People get careless or just don't care and don't exercise caution. This situation will get really bad if it reaches continents and regions with poor health care systems.
While drugmakers around the world work on potential treatments and vaccines, the World Health Organization sees the most promise in Gilead's remdesivir. An assistant director-general, Bruce Aylward, said there's "only one drug right now that we think may have real efficacy and that's remdesivir," as quoted by CNN. China plans to release results from a 761-patient study of the drug candidate on April 27, Bloomberg reports.
Despite the high recorded number of cases, the world is "just seeing the tip of the iceberg," former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a CNBC interview. Officials are only "detecting a small fraction" of the total cases in countries such as Italy, South Korea, Iran and Japan, he added, while testing in the U.S. is limited so far.
Why does April 27 seem like a century from now?
i think there will be preliminary results in about 2 weeks for remdesivir and the hiv drug cocktail. we just started a remdesivir trial in nebraska - though small numbers.
i think if these drugs work, they will know it.
you also have convalescent plasma that is reported to have good results in china, as well as the malaria drug that is reported to have some decent results in china.

It seems like China could contain it, but I have zero faith in South Korea or Italy containing it due to personal freedoms. They just can't lock down well enough.

korea made the huge mistake of not quarantining visitors from china, even wuhan. i could never understood why they did that. now a petition for impeachment is official in the korean president's office.
i think korea has better chance of controlling than italy. as you said, personal freedoms in europe and coronavirus do not mix well...
to me, the cruise ship threat from 300 ships in the world is as significant as any country other than china. i think the diamond princess accounts for more than 80% of the ~800 cases in japan. cruise lines moved cruises to safe areas, but any of these 300 ships can easily turn a 'safe' city to a city of hundreds of infections.
This is going to batter a lot of international sporting events....they already cancelled the F1 race at Shanghai in April....along with some other Olympic prep events....the big worldwide event is the Olympics, which if they don't see any progress in containment, will probably end up getting cancelled. Thats a lot of money Japan dumped into the games which they will lose out on.

This would be a great time for this country to have some sort of team that responds to pandemics. I remember way back in 2018 when such a team existed. Trump also cut funding for the CDC, forcing the CDC to cancel its efforts to help countries prevent infectious-disease threats from becoming epidemics in 39 of 49 countries in 2018. Among the countries abandoned? China.

He is now cutting funding for the poorest Americans to gather funds to fight the Coronavirus.. the cruelty is the point..

i cannot blame them for stopping to 'help' china on pandemics. china would simply look at that as american arrogance.
the only thing which would stop some rich chinese from eating wild animals is a pandemic.
well they got the pandemic, and now eating wildlife has been permanently banned. it is the only silver lining in this thing particularly for those of us who go there regular. so hope it lasts.

Gonna get ugly now...Brazil reports its first case.
depending on where it is, transmission rate in the southern hemisphere may tell us whether warmer (but nontropical) weather will save us from the virus in june...
Donald Trump news conference on Coronavirus with CDC - LIVE
That news conference was not very reassuring, it’s likely a lot worse than what the numbers suggest. Nice of him to hand off the hot potato to the VP, who was reportedly known for overseeing Indiana’s worst HIV outbreak as governor.
Mike will soon be familiar with the undercarriage of the bus as the panic and supply chain issues continue to pressure the equity market. Eventual job losses and a recession all seem to be inevitable, as would a change in November.
why is there no quarantine of all travelers from korea now?
korean flight attendant tested positive after flying into and out of los angeles
she may have gotten virus from association with cult
she was all over los angeles koreatown and serviced how many passengers?

I'm sure many other counties will be closed to travel here soon.
Not sure US can close entry to China, S.Korea, Iran, Italy. I'm sure there is already infected individuals in US that doesn't get tested/meet criteria for testing. I think there's already infected US person that didn't go to China nor close contact with infected individual aka he was in close contact with an undiagnosed infected individual
