wolfpaclaker wrote: | Thing with AD is that people want to see higher percentage shots, but unfortunately throughout his career he has taken a lot of low percentage shots. I was watching a lot of his videos this summer after the AD trade and one knock on him was that he was good for at least 3-4 bad shots a game (and he makes them at times too), It sends his FG% and TS% down, and now in LA you are seeing teams begin to double and triple him a lot more. The pace we are playing at is slower, so AD is probably getting more halfcourt coverage. This is exposing some of AD's flaws - flaws that weren't always being exposed as much in the quicker fast tempo that Alvin Gentry runs.
So I looked at last year's Pelicans numbers and they were third in the league in pace. You see Ingram go over there and have a complete green light to shoot everything. This is not halfcourt execution basketball as much as the Lakers are trying to play. Lakers are more of control the tempo team, run when there is a chance but usually want to play composed, at a pace they will develop execution for the playoffs.
In contrast, The Lakers are 20th in the league in pace. So AD went from an elite pace team, a team that was not valuing the possession the same way. So he would run up, and take a lot of quick shots and even run all the way and get a lot of easy dunks. These are not happening as much because Lebron plays at a difference pace and as I said before, this team is trying to win a championship knowing this is the tempo they can beat teams at.
What AD has to do is remove habits he has had in the D'Antoni/Gentry offense for years. It will take him time. He chucks up a lot of low % shots, that he has been accustomed to doing. He will slowly get better at it. However it will probably take a full year playing halfcourt basketball like this. Frank Vogel has to watch tape with AD and show him exactly where the doubles are coming from and to encourage him to move the ball quicker in that situation. Frank has to also show him where he is letting the defense off the hook with bad shots. I am sure AD will adjust at some point. I just don't know if it will be this season, or next. The D'Antoni offense is great for the RS and putting up monster stats and the league has adopted a lot of it, but come playoffs you need halfcourt execution as well, and AD has had very little experience in the playoffs and playing this style. |
Good post. I think Kuzma is going through the same adjustment with the change of pace. From the moment he was drafted by us he was conditioned to play uptempo. Kuz has a bit more leeway as a bench player though. AD has to make a bigger adjustment as a starter who plays a lot of minutes next to Lebron. He has to program himself to make the most of every possession because there just aren't as many of them in this slower offense. I don't like these fadeaways and 3-pointers that he takes. They're a waste of possessions when our greatest strength is inside scoring. Let guys like Green, Caruso, Daniels, Cook take care of the outside shooting.
By contrast Pau came from Memphis which was notoriously the slowest team in the league. Sliding into the triangle offense was a natural fit for him. |

Yes, Kuzma the same thing. We did not have too many holdovers from last year's team, but the players with higher usage such as Kuzma would have to adjust to a slower basketball pace and more IQ required in the halfcourt. Much more read and reacting in this offense than the free flowing shoot early offense they have been accustomed to.
This is why AD and Kuzma will get better with time, IMO. It is a scary thought for the league, because we are 10-2 and not even close to peaking on offense. We can still incorporate a lot of Rondo, more AD/Lebron pick and rolls, and Kuzma and AD can just get better at playing halfcourt offense. These things hopefully can happen by April. |

I’d like to see a deal for some type of playmaker like Devonte graham |
I'm sure Charlotte would trade him for our trash |
would you trade koozy for him |

I don't buy that. He should be. His shooting touch is lost right now, we should see crazy games once it comes back. This dude was doing 50/20's in New Orleans. It behooves Lebron and the Lakers to install alpha mode in him. |
He has always been a player who needs someone to set him up, he doesn’t create much for himself. His on/off numbers show us that he is a much more effective scorer with Lebron than without. We just need guys who can set him up. Sure he had big scoring games in NO and those typically coincided with Jrue being healthy. |
Makes me wonder what other superstar we should pair AD with when Bron's contract is over. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

If Lebron is true to his word and plays until he can join his son, we would be looking at 2023. Ironically, it is highly likely that AD’s contract ends after the 2022-2023 season. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

I'm probably delusional but I think Rich and Rob have something up their sleeves to pair a young star with AD in the next two years. A player currently on a rookie contract. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points." |

Almost impossible on a rookie contract, it would have to be a trade. Next season we will be at almost $80 mil with just Lebron, AD and Deng. Add another $20 mil for the guys with player options _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

What if a guy like Fox were to accept the QO and become a free agent when Bron is off the books? Like I said, delusional, but that's how it could happen. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points." |

It could technically happen if Lebron isn’t here beyond 2022. And as I posted before, there is a high likelihood that AD is a FA in 2023. He might be pushing such an agenda as you described. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

The MozDeng mistake is still haunting us. $72 million down the drain with Deng and we have to sacrifice Dlo with Moz . I’m glad we at least got AD and Lebron. |

In order to get AD involved in offense, we need to find some lobs for him early in the game |

Still noticeably injured. Holding his ribs on some plays, very few rebounds, and a reluctance to drive.
He mentioned a couple of days ago his ribs were bothering him more than his shoulder atm.
Get well soon |

Injuries have reduced him to pedestrian level, whenever LBJ rested the AD centric high post offense would immediately give up 13-0 run. We in trouble on this road trip unless AD gets miraculously healthier. |

With or without injuries, he's not a primary initiator. |

AD’s offense has been poor, but he should be in a league of his own for DPoY considerations right now. No one else is close to him. He’s been incredible on defense. He shuts down the paint like Gobert, but can still keep up with smaller guys on the perimeter and challenge shots outside of the paint. Just awesome to see. If he ever gets his offense right, he will be the most impactful player in the league. |

we need to bring it the Cap or some other post game specialist. He needs some more moves besides that turn around fade away that like never goes in _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

Terrible offensive stat line but still got 5 blocks. Great to have a 2-way player like AD.
Having 2 superstars is such a luxury, if one has a bad game, then the other superstar could make up the slack. The Warriors were super lucky to have Steph/KD/Klay for 3 years. |
