Mods please do not delete. The FA thread discuss al FAs, and it discusses trading for AD mid season next year, not this summer.
Anyway, is it actually possible to have a roster of LeBron, AD, and a max FA? Either a 10+ guy or <10 year guy?
Can anyone list out actual scenarios with real salaries? Thanks _________________ Billions Billions Billions |

It's possible to sign a 30% max FA and then trade everyone (everyone) for AD after signing the 1st round pick. Everyone under contract to match salaries. _________________ Under New Management |

Anyone but Durant. Unless we get the number 1 pick, then we're just short of the next tier (but have Zion) _________________ #countonkobe |

41. Let's say a team arranges for all of its players to become free agents at the same time. If they renounce everybody, do they then have a team salary of $0 and a full cap under which to work?
Quote: |
No. There are lots of things that are included in team salary besides active contracts -- see question number 13 for a full list. Note especially that there is a roster charge when a team has fewer than 12 players under contract, free agents included in team salary, players given offer sheets, and first round draft picks -- so even if a team has no contracts and renounces all its free agents, exceptions and draft picks, it still will have a non-zero team salary.
|
13. Exactly what is included when computing total team salaries? What is cap room? What is a cap hold?
Quote: |
A cap hold called an "incomplete roster charge" if the team has fewer than 12 players (players under contract, free agents included in team salary, players given offer sheets, and first round draft picks). This charge is equal to the rookie minimum salary for each player fewer than 12. For example, if there are 11 players included in team salary, then an amount equal to the rookie minimum salary is added to the team salary5; if the roster is completely empty, then 12 times the rookie minimum salary is added to the team salary. This charge only applies during the offseason.

A roster of LeBron, Durant and Davis totals to only three.
Once the roster count is bumped to twelve, then something breaks in the calculations.

I saw your posts on the other thread as well, and I think your math is wrong bc we only need 10 roster spots (7 minimum + LBJ AD Max). The last 2 spots can share MLE. So that saves 1.8M, less 5.5m to represent a 30% max guy (instead of 35% like KD). So that is $7.3m in savings if we use MLE and sign <10yr player like Kyrie, which is possible since u have -$6.7M _________________ Billions Billions Billions |

Sure if we can sign talent the quality of AC Green, Robert Horry, Rick Fox, Glen Rice, Fisher for minimum contracts.
Also prime Kobe and prime Shaq are much superior to old LBJ and injured AD.
Maybe with Kyrie or Kawhi there is some small hope... but you probably need to scratch 20 games off of each of their schedules.
Absolutely idiotic to go with short rotations with all these injured or old players.
IF they all go to Germany and get some mysterious treatment that allows them to play 80 games for 38 minutes this formula might work... but it's much better just to sign Kawhi and go with the depth. |

Actually we can use the MLE for quite a number of roster spots. Technically we could sign like 5 guys using MLE if we wanted to and not have to bear the min contracts that are against the cap _________________ Billions Billions Billions |

NBA CBA FAQ (1999)
There isn't a table with the minimum salaries, so the table for the Mid-Level Salary Exception will be shown instead. The minimum salary for the current season is $838,464.
17. Are there exceptions to the salary cap?
Quote: |
MID-LEVEL SALARY EXCEPTION -- This exception is also called the "Middle Class Exception." This exception says that a team can offer any player a contract equal to the average NBA salary every year, even if they are over the cap. This exception is new to the current CBA, and was "ramped up" to the average salary over a period of four years (see question number 22 for the definition of "average salary"). Here is the value of the mid-level salary exception for each year of the CBA:
98-99.......$1.75 million
99-00.......$2.00 million
00-01.......$2.25 million
01-02.......$4,538,000

Cap Space Math After Signing < 10 Year Free Agent Summer 2019
To sign a max free agent with under 10 years experience next summer (i.e. Klay, Butler, Kemba, Cousins, Kyrie or Kawhi), we'll need to rescind all of our rights/cap holds for our FAs. Here is the math -
$37,430,000......LeBron James (1)
$32,700,000......Kawhi Leonard (2)
$8,719,320........Lonzo Ball (3)
$7,265,485........Brandon Ingram (4)
$2,164,680........Moritz Wagner (5)
$1,974,600........Kyle Kuzma (6)
$1,934,160........Josh Hart (7)
$1,885,329........#25 2019 1st Round Pick (8)
$1,416,852........Isaac Bonga (9)*
$897,158...........Min Salary (10)
$897,158...........Min Salary (11)
$897,158...........Min Salary (12)
$4,992,994........Luol Deng (1 year $14,977,482 Stretched over 3 Years)
____________
$103,174,894
$109,000,000 (Cap) - $103,174,894 (Salaries) =$5,825,106 cap space left**
*Contract guaranteed for only $897,158.
**After using up their available cap space, the Lakers will then still have the MLE room exception (valued at about $5 million next year) to use on another free agent.

He has the cap hold for the 2019 first still at the level for a pick #25 while I use the cap hold for the #10 pick. Other than that, it is much the same as mine. |

Wow, if we could "somehow" keep BI while bringing in AD, and then signing Kawhi or KD to go along with BRON and those 5 MLE's, you have BRON/AD/Kawhi or KD and BI, with 4 MLE"S....Now you are talking, but it seems like a million mile away pipe dream... |

So that is $7.3m in savings if we use MLE and sign <10yr player like Kyrie, which is possible since u have -$6.7M |
All we can do is disagree about the number of incomplete roster charges.
I will point out something that could be a problem using your methodology.
Once the cap space and the room exception (estimated $4,760,700) are used up, the only way to sign players will be via a minimum salary exception. The starting minimum salary increases as the years of service in the NBA increases and it will top out at about $2.6 million for 10+ years in the league with a $109 million salary cap.
If there is a desired player that has an offer of the room exception ($4.76 million) or more from another team and the best that Magic & Pelinka can offer is a veteran minimum, then the $2.1 million (or more) difference might be enough to lose the desired player to the other team.
Estimates have more cap space being available this summer than last summer, so offering nothing but the veteran minimum to fill out 11 - 12 roster spots with decent talent could be quite difficult to do. |

the Lakers definitely can, the way to maximize this would be:
1)first sign the MAX FA
2)fill up remaining cap space with a role player or 2 (about 4-5mil left)
3)use MLE for more help
4)trade for AD (we would now be over the cap)
Zu trade hurts with this because he was perfect piece to have around as a low cap hold S&T salary filler and trade sweetener. Now the Lakers are limited in the what filler options they can offer to make a trade package work as far as salary matching. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

LeBron is easily the oldest of the four and he has also been the most durable as well. |

I’m with you.
Plus we’d be foolish to run back to the Pelicans after the crap they pulled at the deadline. |

The whole "but it worked with kobe and shaq" thing is the most insane thought i've been hearing this season, which is saying a lot.. Nobody we can grab or Lebron will be at either one of those guys level not to mention if it's Irving or Leonard all three of them will have pretty serious injury concerns which we would have no choice but to play them heavy minutes to be a top team. That sounds like another great chance at disaster to me plus as a fan it's just a weak way to construct a roster.
I get the concerns with all the young guys but I take them over that plan 10 times out of 10. |

I think the Lakers' young guys are replaceable with good front offices. The Spurs and Clippers would be able find depth with picks outside of the early first round and bargain-bin free agency.
I think the Lakers should considering this(if possible) after firing the current front office.
It says a lot that people are talking about the young guys as "depth" at this point. I think that's accurate. I don't believe in any of their star-potential at all.
I think Ingram's recent stretch is overrated. He was putting up empty stats after dominating the ball and being set-up on plays. I don't think it's a coincidence that the team doesn't win on his better statistical games and that he has terrible advanced statistics. He's like Randle and Russell in that he probably needs to be the focal point of his own team, but he's not good enough to be the focal point of a championship team.
I think most people agree that Ball and Kuzma are role players, but they do fit into roles better. |

How much would the max be for
Klay?
Kemba?
Kyrie?
One Dream scenario:
Klay as FA
Gay for the Mid Level
Ingram / lotto / Kuz for AD
Ball / Caruso
Klay / Hart
Gay / Hart
LBJ / Wagner
AD / McGee |
