It's been a problem for a long time in the modern era of the NBA. Scores of NBA games are lost due to ineptitude at the charity stripe. |
I don't think people realize how seriously bad this is. this is actually embarrassing for a team sporting supposedly an all time great player (who himself contributes to it). There is no way to win rings with this bad ft shooting, no way in hell. It's not just the free throw points, it means we have a very very bad shooting team. Lonzo is embarrassing. LIke, jr high school players can shoot better than that. You cant miss free throws and get through the playoffs to the finals. over half of the warriors roster shoots better free throws than our best guy!
the weirdest part to me is how over the past few years, we let go of every single good promising shooter that came across our roster, we weren't able to land any good free agent shooters, and we ended up with the greatest bad shooter of the goat level guys, lebron. and we're so happy right? of course. But happiness doesn't make shots go in. This team, as it stands, is going to lay all sorts of bricks for losses and I'm preparing for those frustrating nights at the end of games when we are not going to be able to do clutch anything without some major help from the refs. |

Lonzo's make rate might not be significant factor in close games. He hardly drives the ball at all, so frequency of attempts will be low. With LeBron on the team now, it's very possible that Lonzo's not on the floor much at all in crunch time, until he can be a threat as a scorer.
The rest of the primary team (Rondo, KCP, Ingram, Hart, Beasley, Stevenson and Kooz) can manage 74% or so as a group (not a big reach), I reckon we'll probably see the Lakers win or lose tight games for reasons other than FT%. _________________ “These GOAT discussions are fun distractions while sitting around waiting for the pizza to be served.”

They will get a lot of practice. They are going to be at the line a ton this year. |

Kuzma is shooting 81% from the line this year , pleased with that if he can keep it up
Hart and Lonzo are both very concerning tho
Lonzo is shooting 57% this year and Hart just 53% this year.
We can forget about all the crazy expectations until guys can at least hit a couple freethrows consistently .. |

It’s bad that late in games, I’m hoping our guys can make at least one. It’s bringing back those Shaq moments. DJ swished a couple of them, that’s how bad I felt about last night game. |

we can already see in a young season how this is a problem for us. Again, i hear a lot of the fans talking about it in a compartmentalized way. LIke, just practice free throws and your percentage will go up. Eh, not really. The idea is good and it works, but in reality, NBA players don't go from incoming 75% to 85%...only in very rare cases, kawhi comes to mind, and he must have practiced his a$$ off. Or whatever, its rare.
We have a team full of sub-80 ft shooters. NOt only does this mean we are going to lose close games at the line, which we have already seen twice now? BUt it also means we don't have good 3pt shooters either, and we're going to brick most of our desparation shots when we're down by 5 with two minutes left, and we've seen that too. Brick brick brick. We have a team full of bad shooters.
Svi is our great hope? mr 80% with no nba experience? we'll see.
Hart, Kuz are ok at best. Hart lost the summer championship by bricking free throws. Kuz is not great, but he's ok.
Lebron, our star, is bad, worse than Kuz and KCP types. He's the one that will shoot a lot of those clutch ft's. Let's hope he makes one like last night. But the reality is he will brick a lot of those important ones and we don't have a kyrie or curry to step in....those will be frustrating losses, brace yourselves.
KCP is good, but everyone hates him, he's not getting love or playing time. Same with Beasly. Maybe midway through the season, they'll get more time. WHen I say good, it's not that good either, just good for an NBA player, 80-ish percent, the way you expect for "good" shooters.
Let's not say too much about Rondo and Ball. THey shoot like Shaq but without 7' of muscle and power. Ball doesn't even want to be fouled anymore, which is probably not a great mental place to be as the ballhandler.
This is such a major, huge issue. I don't hear people worried too much. I think they are compartmentalizing it. THere's this belief you can work on fts and improve it independently of other types of shooting. yea right. Again, very rare that someone is great at threes and not great at fts.
WHen Lebron is at the line, what are people thinking? People think this is a magic, MJ, Kobe type at the line, for sure! Those guys make their free throws more often than not. The reality is that he is nowhere near that, and he's going to brick a lot of them. He already has as a Laker, maybe 3/4 clutch ft bricks? And it's not like we haven't seen him for 15 years bricking fts in a lot of important moments. What is he, 75% avg? lol. I bet that goes way down in those important moments.
And then on the other hand, the Warriors are just stocked with 90% shooters. Two MVPs, both 90% shooter, no surprise. And the other guys are all mid 80s ish. that's a team full of elite fts. THey will not lose their close games. We will....it will be a 1 pt game, they will make theirs, we'll brick a couple, and game's over.
THe Kings lost their franchise in game 7 with bricking fts. And from supposedly good ft shooters, uncharacteristic. And for us we can expect it! lol, ugh. |

Lose one game and could have lost us another just 8 games in lol. If this team makes it to the playoffs, we are toast. |

Again, what is this based on? Of all the stats, the ft is the most reliable because compared to every other nonsense stat that people try to make conclusions with, it's the only shot that is the same for everyone in the league (for the most part). in other words, its the easiest one to make predictions with based on the historical box scores.
SO I predicted we would shoot 72% overall. Well, we are shooting 71.6%. I don't expect it to change too much without different players. That puts us in the bottom 6 of the NBA (at least we're not dead last like last year). No big deal, right? We won rings with Kobe/Shaq and we were dead last in fts. Well, big difference when its Shaq missing most of them. That's tolerable because of his size and unique power/skillset. That doesn't work if it were Kobe bricking all those, or the perimeter guys. And it definitely won't work in today's league. PLus, it's just one guy with a bad percentage and a lot of attempts dragging it down. Our team now is a team effort of dragging down, they are ALL pretty bad, just not individually as bad as Shaq.
This is not a mystery, the team knows this, and they know its a problem. Whatever the plan is, it definitely doesn't seem to expect a ring with this roster. There must be a plan.... |

I created a topic, I did not see this.
Its getting worse by the way, the free throw shooting. A gradual trend in the wrong direction.
We're on 66.3% the last 5 games. That 55.6% v Houston didn't help matters but it still counts. |

Ask the 2001 Sacramento Kings if free throw shooting is important.

Yeah, FT shooting will be even more important in the playoffs when the margin for error is much smaller. |

They shot 77% from the line
We shot 68% from the line
Maybe it's a good omen. |

It’s gotta be embarrassing for them. I hope it is anyway. Ridiculous for NBA players and an NBA team. Only KCP can I ever expect not to go 1 for 2. Do these guys even practice foul shots?
