What is up with those insane prices for every single ipod accessory? I bought this Laker cover to protect my ipod from scratches on Amazon. It came today and it's literally a piece of plastic, like those plastic eggs you'd buy from those little 25 cent machines. It couldn't have cost more than 50 cents to make the thing.
Anyone else buy this thing? It looks sweet but the price! 20 dollars!?

Is that an Apple product or a third-party? My guess is third party, which means you should be blaming them, not Apple  . But anyway, yeah, that's pretty pricey all right... |

just use tin foil and rubber bands to cover your ipod. it looks real ghetto and you won't have to worry about getting jacked for it if you buy some cheap (white earbuds are a dead giveaway) headphones from the 99c store.  |

| Its a great product. Unique. The absolute best on the market. And, the latest iPods are actually slightly less expensive than their new rivals (microsoft's whatchmacallit, and the new samsung unit). The third party accessories are sometimes great (from Belkin or Bose, etc) or sometimes not. I love my clear plastic hard case. Cant recall the manufacturer at the moment. |

Again, so what? This isn't an Apple product. Apple doesn't actually make any iPod sleeves/cases so far as I'm aware.

Well we do live in a capitalist society--companies aim to get insanely rich off of their products.
All of the Lakers get insanely rich off of basketball. We can begrudge them their profit when they don't work for it, and, in the case of companies, when they are ripping off consumers, we can also complain about their getting rich off of fraud. But I'm not even sure Apple is making an "insane" profit off of the iPod--originally they were taking a loss on iPods. They used them to launch iTunes, which was the real money maker. They might be making an insane profit now off of the hardware, but I fail to see why that would be a point of contention. And I fail to see why it is a point of contention for third parties to make profits off of the niche created by the iPod--e.g. making sleeves and other accessories.
You're perfectly capable of making your own sleeve if you don't want to pay. I know several people who have taken the initiative to do just that.
The bottom line is that you are not complaining about an actual Apple product, but a third party product you chose to buy, just like you chose to buy an iPod. The logical conclusion is here is that your judgement sucks, not the product that you bought another product to protect the first product. |

You can't buy it for $.99 because one end is made only to connect to iPods. In that sense its a unique bit of technology, and so you will have to pay for it. Of course, its easy for me to talk ... So, I sympathize, but don't blame Apple.
You should even think about changing the title of this tread to "I hate some third party manufacturers of ipod related products because they exploit apple's monopoly of the portable digital music market to charge me too much for accessories!" |

Im using a cable right now and watching a movie on my tv, using my ipod and a cable I bought for 1.99 at circuit city. The same cable sells for 25 dollars on the apple website.  |

| These guys have tons of analysts who do nothing but focus on pricing/licensing. Believe me, if they're charging a certain amount for it, it's because a large enough market exists out there to make it profitable for them to sell it at that level. Simple supply and demand. Of course, that sucks for po' folks like us, but you can't begrudge them for making a buck on something we all have a choice to buy or not. |

Disclosure: I do happen to own Apple stock. But, I have been a longtime Apple fanatic, way before ownership. Not angry at all, just a fanatic!
I will admit, btw, that I am the first to say that its not always a good idea to buy things directly from Apple. I buy the computers, the ipods, and some of the software. Cables, memory chips, etc ... I would never go to Apple because they do charge more than other retailers, because at heart they dont really consider themselves retailers.
Another by the way, I thought, for some reason, that you were talking about the ipod connection cable. |

and yet people are still buying them like crack. I agree the accesories suck... but the product itself is actually a steal, I mean I bought my 2 gig nano on amazon.com, didn't get taxed on it for 138 bucks - brand new out of the box. You can't complain about that for what an ipod offers.

apple products are all great but cheap they are not. however this guy is complaining about a product that apple does not make. this is not a reflection on apple, but a reflection on whatever company made that product.
