The Lakers should not be this bad at landing free agents
By Matt Bonesteel July 2 at 8:16 AM
(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes, File)
For the third straight year, the Los Angeles Lakers have whiffed on their attempt to sign a big-name free agent after four-time all-star LaMarcus Aldridge decided to look elsewhere and coveted free agent DeAndre Jordan — admittedly a long shot to sign — found the team’s pitch to be “somewhat underwhelming,” a source told Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times.
Which begs the simple question: How on earth is it possible that a team …
— With 16 NBA titles.
— That plays in a palace lined with celebrities who want to be seen with you.
— That’s located in the media capital of the world, a place where it’s 72 and sunny all the time.

NBA Free Agents 2015: Grading Early Signings and Latest Day 2 Rumors
By Jared Johnson , Featured Columnist Jul 2, 2015
The NBA's free-agency period got off to a busy start Wednesday as 25 players agreed to contracts and two others agreed to contract extensions starting in the 2016-17 season.
After a busy first day, many of the top free agents are off the market. Many of the contracts agreed to Wednesday may have seemed too expensive, but they won't seem as excessive in a few years after the salary cap's steep increase.
So let's look at every free-agent transaction that happened between 12:01 a.m. ET July 1 and 12:00 a.m. ET July 2 and hand out some grades based on contract value and the player's fit with the team. Following that, we'll look at some prominent rumors heading into the second day of free agency.

NBA Teams Tell Los Angeles Lakers They're Embarrassing Themselves
The Huffington Post | By Maxwell Strachan
Posted: 07/02/2015 10:32 am EDT Updated: 9 minutes ago
Sometimes, when your friends are embarrassing themselves, the most important thing you can do is tell the truth.
So it was with the NBA and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, after the team failed once again to nab a marquee free agent, this time LaMarcus Aldridge. NBA teams complained to the league that the Lakers had created a rather sad #LAtoLA hashtag -- get it? -- in an attempt to lure Aldridge to the team.
You know that feeling where you know you’ve done something you're not especially proud of, just hoping none of your buddies saw? Yeah, that just happened to the Lakers. The #LAtoLA tweets were deleted shortly after the complaint.

Jack Kent Cook, Dr Jerry Buss both bigger than life and NBA players could see it. Need to bring in a non-family "President Of Player Operations" that can get back that Laker Mojo. |

Lakers Baffled That Free Agents Don't Like Their Bad Basketball Team

I don’t want to keep piling on the Lakers (yes I do), but their failed wooing of LaMarcus Aldridge sounds like the biggest free-agency botch since Kobe Bryant spent a couple hours yelling at Dwight Howard across a conference-room table. And each new detail that comes out is sadder and more hilarious than the last.
I thought nothing could top this one:

Lakers are in a pathetic state right now. You know it's bad when you can't get players to come, taking top dollars, to one of the best past nba franchises.....

Over a billion dollars were spent when NBA free agency opened on Wednesday
Last Updated: 02/07/15 12:52pm
Kevin Love: Will the power forward be one and done with the Cleveland Cavaliers?
NBA franchises combined to commit more than $1bn on free agent signings in the hours after players were made available on Wednesday.
Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers was the biggest individual recipient, securing a new $110m five-year deal from the franchise he joined last summer along with LeBron James.
The first day of free agency saw dozens of deals completed, although most involved players staying with their teams and prime contract-less stars like James, Dwyane Wade and LaMarcus Aldridge remain unsigned.

Laker mystique is dead
By Tom Ziller @teamziller on Jul 2, 2015, 9:35a 18
You can never count on the Los Angeles Lakers being bad for too long. The franchise's history speaks for itself. But it's an inescapable fact that these are dark days for the world's most famous basketball team.
Two seasons in the tank is bad enough. But now, the Lakers have struck out on their top free agent targets three years in a row. In 2013, Dwight Howard decamped for Houston after a bizarre season in L.A. and an even weirder courtship. In 2014, Carmelo Anthony chose the awful Knicks over the awful Lakers and LeBron didn't even bother considering L.A.
And now, the Lakers appear to have lost all three of their top free agent targets on Day 1 of the 2015 free agency festival. Kevin Love decided to stay in Cleveland, Jimmy Butler is staying in Chicago and LaMarcus Aldridge has reportedly ruled out L.A. after a late-night meeting.

We need to sign Jack and Denzel to 10-day contracts to be at the facility during free agency.
Anyone think Jimmy and Kobe are purposely sabotaging us?.. _________________ LAKERS RAIDERS KINGS DODGERS AZTECS MIDSHIPMEN |

NBA Free Agents 2015: Final Top 50 Big Board
By Adam Fromal , National NBA Featured Columnist Jun 30, 2015
The NBA's crazy season is upon us.
With the draft firmly in the past, the focus now shifts away from the incoming players, moving to highlight the established players who are no longer under contract. There are quite a few of these free agents, ranging from nondescript contributors who spent the 2014-15 season glued to a bench to the best player in the Association.
Teams with money to spend will inevitably pursue the biggest names, while other squads will make moves to clear up more cap space, intending to use the financial flexibility in the very same manner. No organization is entirely content at the beginning of July, since it's always possible to make improvements. Even the defending champions will be looking to bring back some of their players with expired deals while also upgrading certain spots on the bench.
But how do the premier members of the 2015 free-agent class stack up as the rumor mill begins churning?

NBA Free Agency Day 1 Takeaways
DDN Correspondent Posted on 02 Jul, 2015 at 10:52:AM IST
NBA Free Agency Day 1 Takeaways: The first day of NBA free agency was without doubt crazy with one estimate putting the total as high as $1 billion dollar.
Eighteen of top 40 free agents agreed to deals (or are expected to, in the case of Tim Duncan and LeBron James) on the first day itself.
Here's a look at the best and worst from day one of NBA Free Agency.
WINNER: San Antonio Spurs: The Spurs entertained LaMarcus Aldridge Wednesday. They soon got confirmation that Kawhi Leonard, their franchise cornerstone, back for for the long haul and they also got Danny Green back at a considerable discount.
http://www.delhidailynews.com/news/NBA-Free-Agency-Day-1-Takeaways-1435814461/
LOSER: Los Angeles Lakers: Aldridge has reportedly decided to turn down the Lakers. But it is likely that Kobe Bryant should sit out on the next free agent meeting he's in. The Lakers are now out on the biggest free agent on the market.
WINNER: Anthony Davis: USD 143 million over five years, USD 29 million on average per season. That is a huge amount of money, the largest contract in NBA history thanks to the ballooning salary cap with the new media deal next summer. Davis has the option of taking a two-year deal, then re-upped for even more. |

The whole league is down on the Lakers. We've won so much and had so much exposure they are thrilled at our demise. "The best revenge is to succeed."
I hope we can do that eventually without big named signings. |

One wonders if the Lakers were expecting LA to play the 5 (not his position) or the 4 - what would they do with Randle, Kelly and Black? Would the Lakers want him to play the 5 like Draymond Green or Blake Griffin?
Monroe is a slightly older version of Okafor that also plays little D
Jordan would be a FA acquisition because it would bring the Clippers back to their typical 2nd level status. To pay a max contract that they cannot play in the fourth quarter because of his FT woes is highlighted when it is recognized that he is not Shaq-like on offense.
Would any of these players want and/or have the vision to be the next face of the Lakers?
Note: these players are very talented but haven't shown the ability to lead
Maybe seeking a player who is just waiting to burst out when given an opportunity is a wise option - it worked with James Harden |

Report: Lakers and Knicks didn’t offer Greg Monroe maximum contracts (update: agent says otherwise)
Dan Feldman Jul 2, 2015, 12:29 PM
Howard Beck of Bleacher Report:
Look, I don’t know. David Falk has incentive to say his client had more max offers. The Knicks and Lakers have incentive to say they missed on Monroe due to their own financial decisions rather than on-court ineptitude.
Either way, I think it would have been reasonable for the Knicks and Lakers to offer or not offer Monroe the max. And if they didn’t offer the max, they surely came close.
Are the Lakers and Knicks striking out in free agency?
Or are they just being patient?
Score one for patience with Greg Monroe, who agreed to a three-year max contract with the Bucks.

When easy money is everywhere, the comparative glow of the Lakers' golden history and locale ain't enough to keep pace.
I think free agents aren't dumb especially when we can't offer better money than other clubs.
I think they took note of our club's persistent weakening in areas over the past five years. We have an undistinguished managing owner and a well-intentioned GM without the apparent influence (or judgement) necessary to guide his owner adequately. They've drawn up the hires of pedestrian and mismatched coaches, coupled to a series of desperate hires and extensions of ancient players. They've had mixed draft results. They've lost talented big men of the highest order in Gasol and Howard, with nothing to show for their exits. The current roster is mended somewhat, but untested and likely to be refilled with mismatched pieces.
Momentum is hard to regain but when one does, it feels good. Ask the Bucks. That franchise is on the rise in all of these respects. |

Kobe's Pitch to LaMarcus Aldridge Reveals Why Free Agents Are Rebuffing Lakers
By Kevin Ding , NBA Senior Writer Jul 2, 2015
LOS ANGELES — Kobe Bryant could only say what he knew.
He had lost faith in the Los Angeles Lakers, Bryant told LaMarcus Aldridge.
Bryant did not believe the franchise could help him win again. Until, much to his awe and delight, Bryant said, the Lakers turned it all around in 2008, getting him Pau Gasol and two more titles.
Bryant didn't stop there: He brought up the blocked Chris Paul trade to Aldridge as even greater proof of Mitch Kupchak's team-building brilliance.

would you play for an owner who shows up for business meetings in a ball cap?
Jimbo is the perfect example of what happens when a child inherits their fathers wealth and success.
He never had to work for anything and build relationships. He sat his spoiled butt in the back seat and mooched off his fathers success and money. He knew one day the empire would be his but assumed it would be on auto pilot. Little did he know, by not staying on top of the business side of things the league quickly changed and his first major decisions as an owner back fired in his face causing the domino effect into mediocrity.
Players are done with Lakers at this point. Jimmy needs to step down. Its the only way to fix things before the spiral does even more damage then its already caused. |
