Lakers add a star, but focus remains on the one in Orlando
Quote: | LOS ANGELES -- In the span of about one hour Wednesday afternoon, Magic general manager Rob Hennigan held a press conference at Amway Arena and announced that trade talks for Dwight Howard had stalled, while Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak held a press conference at his team's training facility and introduced Steve Nash. The events didn't seem to have anything to do with each other -- Hennigan had been negotiating mainly with the Nets, and Kupchak never said a word about the Magic -- but Howard hung over the purple-and-gold practice court like a 6-11 specter. |

The fact the Lakers FO is so obsessed with Dwight is very disappointing. He's a mental selfish midget who doesn't deserve a max contract with anyone. His best days are behind him, while the Lakers possess a young star with plenty of growth lying ahead. what do the Lakers think they'll do when DH pulls this (bleep) on them one year from now? They'll be looking at Bynum, where ever he lands and kicking themselves in the ass for this for many years to come. Fans will be cursing them when they see how the tables had turned.
Very disappointed in Jim, Jerry and Mitch. |

It's simply seen as an upgrade. No one in the league is higher on Bynum, than Jim. If he's willing to deal for Howard, shows you that Howard may be a bit better than you realize. |

I wouldn't call it an obsession. It's simply doing their job. |

Everyone wants Howard over Bynum except you. Maybe you're the one obsessed with Bynum? |

I think focus should be on the bench. Nash Bryant Ebanks Gasol Bynum can handle it, but without better pg, sg, jordan hill and i hope grant hill - nothing will change... |

Lakers secured Steve Nash through extraordinary circumstances
By Mark Medina
July 12, 2012, 10:44 a.m.
Long before the free agency madness begins, the Lakers' front office puts together a list.
General Manager Mitch Kupchak and executive Jim Buss rank the players they covet once July 1 hits. It doesn't matter whether the Lakers can afford the player. It doesn't matter whether he is interested.
No free agency signing or trade happens without Kupchak first picking up the phone.
So even with Steve Nash proclaiming publicly he couldn't envision himself joining the Lakers, Kupchak recalled Buss providing a stern reminder.
"Jim Buss kept on saying, 'Mitch, don't forget to call. He's at the top of the list,' " Kupchak said. "I said, 'Jim, I'm not sure if this is even something we can begin to work out.' He said, 'You never know unless you try.' "

Bobcats getting Sessions, pursuing Humphries
With Augustin out at point guard, Kemba Walker likely to start
By Rick Bonnell

LAS VEGAS D.J Augustin is gone at point guard, free agent Ramon Sessions will replace him, and power forward Kris Humphries and center Brendan Haywood could end up Charlotte Bobcats, too.
The Bobcats came to terms with Sessions Thursday, then rescinded a $4 million-plus qualifying offer to four-year Bobcat Augustin. That made Augustin an unrestricted free agent, and immediately Augustin signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Indiana Pacers.
Restoring $4 million to the Bobcats’ salary cap will help them pursue Humphries, one of the top free agents left on the market, and free-agent-to-be Haywood, a Greensboro native who’s being waived under the amnesty clause by the Dallas Mavericks.

Making Bynum an afterthought is actually kind of easy. _________________ -Most people learn by saying mother, numb, horse, angry... I learned mine by saying Lakers, add gas. - HRD. |

No dominant 24 year old big man is merely an afterthought, and if Andrew is traded, there will be obvious times when he's missed. For example, in the last 5 minutes of games and overtime, Andrew ranks #1 in the league in effectiveness. He is down right unstoppable in those moments, averaging approximately 85% from the field. Where do you think Dwight ranks? Not very high, since he's shoots FTs at less than 50% and gets hacked as a result.
Whether or not you prefer Howard to Andrew (and he may well be the better fit with Steve Nash), doesn't for a moment take away from the fact that Bynum is a dominant big man in his own right, who wants to actually be a Laker and didn't just undergo back surgery with reports coming out that he's moving very slowly and his rehab isn't going as quickly as initially expected. |

Dominant bigs don't have playoff averages of 16.7 ppg on 47.7 shooting. Think Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson, Ewing etc in their prime at 24 years of age would have playoffs like that?
Dominant is a word to easily thrown out there these days. Neither Dwight nor Drew are a dominant offensive players like Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson etc were. That's dominant. Kobe Bryant? Dominant. Lebron James? Dominant. Drew? Not really.
Both have shown they can dominate the glass and defensively. Dwight does it consistently, Drew occasionally. I'd take Drew over Dwight if he began doing it consistently. |
