Deron Williams Can Still Be a Laker Contrary to Rumors

If the Los Angeles Lakers are in the market for the services of Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams, they may still have a shot at signing him, but it will cost them their other seven-foot star.

According to Marc Stein at ESPN.com, Williams has narrowed his choices to the Dallas Mavericks or re-signing with the Nets, and the Brooklyn-bound franchise will not even consider a deal from the Lakers unless it includes center Andrew Bynum.

So what's the hold-up?

I am one of Bynum's biggest supporters, but I would trade him in a second when it comes to what he could be and what Williams is right now.

I know that you should never traditionally trade size for a perimeter player, and while Bynum may fit the traditional model of a low post center which is a rarity these days, is it enough to by-pass the chance to acquire a proven NBA star?

And a lead guard no less.

Forum owners plan to revive venue with $50-million renovation

In its glory days, the Forum was Southern California's preeminent entertainment venue, a behemoth with Roman columns where adoring fans came to see the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Wayne Gretzky and Bob Dylan.

But the famous round building fell on hard times. The Los Angeles Lakers and Kings moved downtown. Other venues in up-and-coming neighborhoods came along to nab the concert business. And, in the end, the Forum was bought by the Faithful Central Bible Church and all but forgotten.

Now, the owners of Madison Square Garden have come to the rescue with an ambitious plan to turn the faded Forum into a juggernaut. The East Coasters are looking to challenge the region's big arenas, including Staples Center and its owner, the politically connected AEG.

Metta World Peace: “We are the best team in the NBA”
Finishing with the third best record in the Western Conference and getting to the second round of the playoffs may be acceptable for some franchises but for the Los Angeles Lakers, it was the second straight year when they were shoved out of the postseason earlier than expected and it could lead to changes this offseason. Maybe not drastic changes like last offseason but for the first time in quite some time, the Lakers didn’t have the look of a championship team. Metta World Peace apparently was seeing something that I wasn’t.

Luol Deng Trade Rumors: Lakers, Magic and Warriors Interested in the Bulls Star

If Deng is actually moved to Los Angeles this time, it won't be for Kobe Bryant. A swap featuring Pau Gasol and Deng is certainly possible within the next few days.

The Lakers could move either Gasol or Andrew Bynum before the start of next season. L.A. wouldn't give up Bynum for Deng, but they'd likely think about moving Gasol for him. The Lakers have had interest in acquiring a defensive minded small forward like Deng or Andre Iguodala.

What should the Lakers do with Pau Gasol?

It may be hard to remember now, but at one point the Lakers viewed Pau Gasol as a savior.

Once the Lakers acquired him in a trade in February 2008 from the Memphis Grizzlies, all sorts of reactions unfolded. The move immediately softened Kobe Bryant's frustration about the team lacking a championship roster. Lakers Coach Phil Jackson admitted skepticism that the Lakers could acquire Gasol for Kwame Brown, Aaron McKie, Javaris Crittenton, two first-round picks and the rights to Pau's brother Marc, whom the Lakers drafted with a second-round pick in 2007. And Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich incredulously suggested the NBA should have a trade committee to veto "trades that don't make sense."

Gasol then guided the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances and two NBA titles. But then his standing among the Lakers quickly fell. Gasol's tepid 13.1 points on 42.9% shooting in the 2011 NBA playoffs largely led to the Lakers' four game sweep to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals. The Lakers tried to trade him and Lamar Odom in a three-team trade to land them Chris Paul. Once NBA Commissioner David Stern nixed the deal for "basketball reasons," Gasol remained professional but continuously battled frustrations including endless trade rumors and a reduced role.

Now the Lakers are back to Square One on how they will handle Gasol's future.

Lakers looking to continue 2nd round success

In the last 20 years, the Lakers have done quite well in the second round as their draftees have gone on to play an average of 140 games in the NBA, which is 10th best in the league during that time period, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The average second round pick since 1992 has played 125 games in the league, according to Elias.

That statistic doesn’t even do the Lakers complete justice because second round picks Luke Walton, Ronny Turiaf, Von Wafer, Marc Gasol, Devin Ebanks, Darius Morris and Andrew Goudelock are all still active players.

Also in the last 20 years, the Lakers landed two players that went on to become All-Stars in the second round in Gasol (who was their No. 48 pick in 2007 and ultimately was used to acquire his older brother Pau Gasol who helped L.A. to back-to-back championships) and Nick Van Exel (the No. 37 pick in 1993 who was named an All-Star in 1998 in his fifth and final season with the Lakers).

NBA draft: Possible Lakers picks

On most NBA draft nights, the Lakers could look at other teams unworried that they had an insignificant stake in the selections.

The Lakers usually came off championship seasons. The previous labor deal allowed them to spend nearly infinite amounts of money to acquire players more equipped to help them win now, not later. Opponents' efforts in restocking their roster worried the purple and gold very little.

The circumstances are different entering Thursday's NBA draft. The Lakers need to acquire younger talent. Because of the more punitive luxury taxes stemming from the new collective bargaining agreement, they can no longer simply outspend teams. They'll see plenty of other teams restock, making the Lakers' quest to rebuild even more difficult.

And, by the way, the Lakers only have the last pick in the NBA draft (60th overall). Unless the Lakers make a trade for a higher draft pick, it will be a quiet night for sure. But based on numerous online NBA mock drafts, there appears to be a few candidates worthy of consideration.
