I feel like they are one of the most underrated bands around. They're famous and everything, but not super-famous like The Rolling Stones and others. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
Out of my list of top 100 greatest bands, I place them somewhere around 3,457... maybe 3,456 but I think DM has earned that spot by the slightest of margins.
They put out some good songs in their time, but they were a genre band. Among the new wave/alternative bands, they were the choice of the goths. They weren't as brilliant as the Talking Heads or REM, and they didn't appeal to as wide of an audience, but they were a good pick if you wanted to wear black nail polish and contemplate suicide, I suppose. They may seem different to folks of your generation, but they are actually part of my generation.
Their problem was they did not breakup, so the quality has dropped off considerably.
The Smiths are considered one of the all time greats because they broke up right at their peak. Morrissey has been great solo but he should have called it quits 10 years ago.
If you like the Cure, you might like some of the bands who didn't get huge ala Oasis and maybe Blur during the Brit pop period of the 90s.
Take a look at Pulp and Suede and even Belle & Sebastian. Great bands. _________________ #11/08/16 America became GREAT again

Oasis is great, but I always thought they were really popular during the 1990s and pretty world renown. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

Not a huge fan of the Cure, i listen occasionally. I was actually listening to Disintegration not too long ago, such a great album still. _________________

If I made a top 300 list I doubt they'd make it.
I never throw on The Cure, but they would make my Top 300 on the strength of "Just Like Heaven" alone. That is a really great pop song.
And they put out some really excellent albums in the 80's and 90's. Their sound is all their own and Robert Smith is one of the best front men of the last 30 years.
Like I said, I don't listen to them that much anymore, but I will concede they are probably better/more significant than most of the bands I listen to.
Same with REM. I don't listen to them either, but they are better than most of the stuff I listen to.
What I am trying to say is that I listen to s*** music.

Just Like Heaven is an amazing song.
"I found myself, alone, alone, alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me."
The imagery in that line is just eerie and tragic.
"Friday I'm in Love" and "Close to me" are the other best songs. They have a lot of Gothic stuff from before they went mainstream as well. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
Robert Smith is a fantastic singer. One of the few who can go off key on purpose (Beth Gibbons is another), and still sound good. Some probably think he's too squawky, but I don't think being a slave to sounding 'nice' is a bad thing (in fact, I think it can hold back considerably). The revolving door of the rest of the band has never quite matched that in talent. So it's kind of a one man show. Overall at their best (Disintegration) their sound was highlighted meticulous layers, at their worst, painfully long/empty dirges.
Their deep 'pop' canon makes an interesting bridge to 'real' post-punk though. The kind of music Smith tried to make before he accidently realized how good he was at selling singles. _________________ *Warning: The preceding post may have contained sarcasm and/or irony.
I like that they varied their sound throughout and still managed to be successful with it. They experimented with their sound and it worked out great commercially.
Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers. That trilogy sets it high when you look at their prime. Plus Wish, Kiss Me and Wild Mood Swings I enjoyed. Just a nice mixture of dreamy music.
Bought Join the Dots as well and it helped me cement them into my music library. Put in so much work with their length of discography and still making music. I like that. Though past their prime, they were one of the bands that got me exploring for new music genres and be open minded above all else.

They certainly were one of the top bands of their period and have some of the genuine songs that still resonate 30 years later. But even so, they don't have that TRUE "timelessness" that makes them a band I would consider in the "All Time Greatest" spectrum. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know
