So does Dallas kind of count as the #3 seed since they beat the #3 seed? If the #8 seed beat the #1 seed, then would the #8 seed count as the #1 seed and face the #5 seed instead of the #2 seed? |
Nope. |
Actually, Candy is partially correct.
As Mule pointed out, Dallas is not considered the #3 seed - they would remain the #6 seed but are guaranteed to play the 2/7 winner.
As to Candy's second point, the #8 seed would not become the #1 seed, but would face the winner of the 4/5 match-up as opposed to the #2 seed.
Assuming the Lakers (#1), Denver (#2), Houston (#5) and Dallas (#6) advance, as we've pointed out a few times already, the match-ups are Lakers/Houston and Denver/Dallas. To Candy's first point, since all of the seeds remain the same, Dallas would never have homecourt against any of the remaining teams. Similarly, Houston would only have homecourt if they advanced and faced Dallas in the conference finals. |
I was simply referring to the point that beating a team doesn't make you suddenly the same seed as that team.
I was speaking specifically to the logic that the 1 seed doesn't get the ultimate benefit of the 1 seed in a locked bracket, but would under a reseeding scenario where the match ups are determined by original seeding and not simply on who beat whom to advance. |
I know - was just trying to give Candy a "better" explanation.
And I was bored. |

Looks like the league's desire to stick with the current scheduling alignment trumped a Lakers game on Sunday. Plus, TNT is a pretty important partner as well. They're giving ABC Lebron or a possible 7th game.
The Sunday games will be Denver/Dallas and Cleveland/Miami or Atlanta (or the 7th game of the Miami/Atl series). |
I am sooooooo smart -
Quote: | The NBA has chosen Monday night for Game 1 of the Lakers’ Western Conference semifinals series, regardless of whether the Lakers face Houston or Portland. The game will be at Staples Center.
So even though Luke Walton was hoping for the longest delay possible to heal his bum ankle, whether the Rockets or Blazers win or whether it goes six or seven games won’t change this part of it.
The Lakers started the second round on a Sunday last year, but this time ABC is looking forward to a couple possible Game 7 showcases for its Sunday schedule. And if ABC doesn’t get a Game 7 between Atlanta and Miami, it will go with Dallas against Denver and then put the Hawks up against LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. |

Just great. I just worked 12 nights in a row, had to DVR every game in the Jazz series, now I'm off for a week and only get two games.
