I have a somewhat lower end Samsung (40" 1080i) and I'm more than happy with the purchase. _________________ Game recognize game, Granddad. - Riley Freeman, The Boondocks |

TACH, after reading many of your posts here for some years now, I tend to take your word on things electronic.
So I am curious, what particular Samsung do you have?
Oh, and I assume plasma is better than LCD, but is there really that big a difference for the casual TV viewer? Do I really want to see the beads of sweat coming off Kobe Bryant's forehead? _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

Plasma Vs LCD depends on a number of factors (life, size of TV, size of the room it's going in).
Check this guide out:
LINK
From the link:
Best HDTVs overall
Pioneer Pro-FHD1
Mitsubishi WD-65831
Pioneer PDP-5070HD
Samsung LN-T4665F
Panasonic TH-50PF9UK
CNET editors' top plasma TVs
Pioneer Pro-FHD1
Pioneer PDP-5070HD
Panasonic TH-50PF9UK
Samsung HP-T5064
Panasonic TH-50PX77U
CNET editors' top flat-panel LCDs
Samsung LN-T4665F
Sony KDL-40XBR2
Samsung LN-T3253H (this is the one I own)
Sharp LC-52D92U
Sharp LC-46D62U
Hope that helps....

I don't think it's necessarily true that plasma displays are better than LCDs. My understanding of the benefits of a plasma screen are that contrast and brightness are somewhat superior to others and they can be made very thin. On the downside, they are more susceptible to screen burn, are more expensive to repair (anecdotal, I've heard stories) and tend to run pretty hot. _________________ Game recognize game, Granddad. - Riley Freeman, The Boondocks |

I don't know much about the differences between plasma and LCD but from what I've read, you don't want to get plasma if you play a lot of video games, especially sports games where there is a score board fixed in certain part of the screen.
Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this. _________________ "It's just fo' decoration! That's it and that's all, man; we do it fo' decorations." -Lil Sis |

I think Exick above explained this some. But this is good to know. I don't play a lot of video games, but on occasion I do, and if I get a nice new expensive TV, I definitely will play some video games on there.
But this also works out for me, as plasmas tend to be more expensive, so I can shell out more money for a system that will be very nice but it won't break my wallet.
Thanks for the heads up, guys. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

depends on what you want. LCD? or plasma?
If your going for the LCD flat screen, I would suggest the SONY XBR series or the samsung if you are feeling more thrifty.
Plasmas? I'd go Pioneer. _________________ Music is my medicine |

Yep, it's called screen burn as Exick mentioned.
Good luck. _________________ "It's just fo' decoration! That's it and that's all, man; we do it fo' decorations." -Lil Sis |

hi_ma, most importantly, look at ratios. The 1080 part is actually the least important thing to to look at. CNet describes TVs and out of four categories, the display is actually a distant fourth in terms of importance. The higher the ratio, the better the TV. If you find a TV at less than 1000:1, back away. You want something higher than that.
And of course, just go to the store and compare the quality when they are running the same program. If you don't notice the difference (and the human eye can't see too much difference between 720 and 1080), then go for whatever feels right. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

Also, make sure it is digitally compliant, and that you won't need to buy an additional digital TV converter (as required by US law coming up in a year or two). _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

Dont do this, dont pick quality based on what looks good at the store. Displays in store arent meant to look the best, they usually make them bright to draw you in. Also the more expensive ones tend to look the best, compared to the cheaper ones. Alot of that is to well obviouslly make the more expensive ones look superior. Choose on your budget, and online stats of each tv. And at worst case you can always read up on getting your tv proffessional calibrated. Which is basically the right settings for your HD set, most people have them all wrong and the right setting makes alot of difference with HD. |

I got a 42" Sharp Aquos LCD. I bought it in Jan of 07 and the reason why I didn't go plasma is because there were no 1080p plasmas yet. Are there now?
If all goes as planned, I should be able to keep the puppy, for which I paid $2000, for at least 5-6 years when 1080p programming becomes much more available. |

Sears is running a special? Hope you have a Costco card. Best place to get Plasma or LCD. 90 day return and prices that compete with anything out there. Sony Bravia 46 LCD 1080p for about 2399.99 _________________ Want Some Pancakes? |
