For what it was, and when it was made, I think Blair Witch is a great movie and does not justify being overrated. We speak of Pulp Fiction here and how great the dialogue is, yet some people bash it saying it does not hold up. Blair Witch can be likened to Pulp Fiction in that it broke ground as nothing like it had been seen before. It does not have re-watch value, but for people who knew nothing about, plus the brilliance of this new technique called viral marketing, seeing it finally was a real joy.

And when the movie came out, there were warnings all over to not sit in the first few rows.

Also...Goodfellas>>>>>Casino. I never liked Casino. I think Casino is vastly overrated.

^^ The Blair Witch Project was horrible and not even close to being 'scary' as it was billed to be, in fact it wasn't scary at all. I remember walking of the theater on opening night thinking "That was it, after all the hype, that was it! What a terrible disappointment." My date agreed as did 99% of the people that didn't walk out before it was over. I was bored watching it, if I were home, I would of fallen a sleep...

Ground breaking... maybe... overrated ABSOLUTELY!

I agree with you on Goodfellas.... Goodfellas > Casino

Interesting. I enjoyed it, and at the time, the people I spoke to really enjoyed it too.

But when the movie came out, I was working with a bunch of film people, so maybe their tastes were skewed.

Maybe I fee the way I do about the film because I fell for the viral marketing hook, line, and sinker and was disappointed when film, for me, did not live up to the hype... but then again, most people I knew who saw the movie in the theater said they were disappointed as well.

I never understood all the hype about Saving Private Ryan.

Blade Runner is not so much overrated as it is dated. I never saw it when it came out since I wasn't yet born. I saw it for the first time in 90s, and it looked good. These days, it just looks dated.

Gone with the Wind is overrated today but back in 1939 when it was released?

Yeah SPR gets hoopla for reasons I don't understand. I think it's a good movie just not great. Not a huge fan of Spielberg really. Especially in recent years.

Blade Runner is terrible top to bottom. That's probably the #1 movie of all time that people love that I don't get. zzzZZZZ.

Re SPR, ask WWII (and especially D-Day) vets why they like it so much...

What would they say?

Several reasons:

As Ocho mentioned, the first few minutes of the film are not only incredibly harrowing, they're apparently quite realistic. The shots shown from the perspective of the German machine gunners illustrate how close they were to the landing boats. Getting ashore was simply luck of the draw...

The rest of the movie also has great attention to historical detail. The confusion, the lost men, the battle on sporadic and multiple fronts are all extremely faithful to the real deal.

The mission. It captures something that we today do not appreciate as much. The sense of nobility and duty, not to mention the amazing sacrifices American men and families made.

The camaraderie. The way the men fuss and fight, and (bleep) about command, while genuinely loving, and dying for, each other. The movie does a great job of showing their fear, anger, love, hate, decency, madness, and individual, everyday guy personalities (drawn as they were from such diverse backgrounds). You come to care about them, although you know many of them will die.

In the end, the movie is about the ambiguities of war. The struggle between decency and depravity, between duty and common sense, between compassion and rage, love and vengeance, honor and survival.

What makes it more powerful is the setting, not the usual Vietnam with its own built-in ambiguities, but a war most people regard with a kind of awe, a righteous war if you will. The contemporary issues set against a more solemn background. No protesters, every man going, but still the same universal issues of war and its effect on the mores and psyches of men.

All of Tarentino's movies all overrated IMO. And I'm in the minority, but I think Casino>Goodfellas, though I liked both.

I think many of the Cohen Brothers films are overrated. Fargo wasn't too bad, though. Their best one, IMO. The Big Lebowski, for example, was overrated.

Also, I find Aliens (the entire series) overrated. I know some people who are crazy about those films, but I've never seen the big deal in them.

I don't think Goodfellas belongs on this list. Neither does Pulp Fiction.

I guess it all depends on a person's sensibility when rating these things.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Godfather yet. Granted I haven't see it but that is one of the most hyped movies ever, there are bound to be many who think it's overrated.

And another movie I just thought of

SUPERBAD

total letdown. Going to see Pineapple express today, hope it is better.

I don't think REPPIN 818 said he personally felt Godfather was overrated. He's saying that there's got to be people out there who think it is overrated. The only disagreement should be on him saying "many" instead of "few". There cannot be many people out there who feel Godfather is overrated.

Godfather is a classic. Some might view it as overrated, but the masses, I'm sure, feel the opposite.

If you consider that digital mess "cinematics." If you want to see real cinematography, check out the films of master cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. Films like Last Emperor and Little Buddha. The latter isn't a great film but the cinematography was pretty amazing.

Just saw it last night, and unless someone explains to me why one should think otherwise, 2001: A Space Odyssey is easily one of the most overrated movies I've ever endured.

NEVER have I had to fast forward through anything remotely as much as I had to with that movie. And even still I was bored out of my skull for long spans.

I understand that in its time the effects must have been amazing, but really did they have to linger on each scene for such an agonizingly long amount of time? It felt like the movie was saying "here's a badass effect you've never seen! LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT IT! do you like it? huh? I DON'T CARE! keep looking at it! gaze in AWE at my mindbendingly astounding glory!!!"
