Roscoe's is the bomb. They closed down the one they used to have in Oakland, but I still hit the one in west LA whenever I get down there.

But Popeye's will do in a pinch.

Not that Roscoe's is pretentious, but they're pricing has gone way out of their roots. Chicken and waffles were a cool at first, but then where do we go? I'm old school, I'll go with the Colonel. With coupons, I can get a KFC meal for less than $3 bucks.

Some of us presently can't afford the luxury pricing of Roscoe's.

There is some good friend chicken in SD, just hard to find... Hash house a go go has great fried chicken. SO does the chicken pot pit shop on el cajon in north park and brothers family diner in allied Gardens. There is more out there, just got to find it.

KFC sucks.

I don't know any of those places.

So you're recommending the following?

1. Hash house a go go
2. Chicken pot pit shop

Are those like real restaurants or more like Roscoe's?

I hear you on making your own. Restaurant fried chicken is always greasy, and it doesn't have to be. I find the best results actually come from baking the chicken, but spraying it with canola oil about 10 minutes before it's done. The oil fries the skin in the oven, but since it's not submerged very little gets into the chicken. You can also rely better on the accuracy of your seasoning, since none of it leaches out into the frying oil. Getting chicken as tender as baking via a deep fryer requires frying in a pressure cooker, and is not a trivial process.

I've never been to Roscoe's. I've never seen one in Boston.

The best was a small chain called Louisiana Fried Chicken, right down the street from Long Beach Poly. I moved out of the area years ago, but it was the best late night fried chicken spot.

I love Popeye's spicy. Church's has better quality chicken meat, but just doesn't have the spicy taste... and face it, Popeye's red beans and rice is amazing.

The only Roscoe's outside of the L.A. area is in Boise, Idaho of all places.

Hash House is a "real" restaurant... here's the link and the description of the dish
Quote:
Sage fried chicken
With a hardwood smoked bacon waffle tower, hot maple caramel & fried leeks New York Times Favorite

The Chicken pot pie shop is more like just a random local place... much more low-key than Roscoes, but still a sit down place. Basically its the kind of place senior citizens eat at, both in clientale and decor. Nothing in the restaurant costs more than maybe $5 or $7 for a good meal. Probably my favorite chicken pot pie ever and they also have these wet sandwiches which are really good (great rolls too). Even if the fried chicken doesn't meet your standards, its still a good standby restaurant to know about. Link

Whoa.

I love good food, but that's a little far from La Jolla... as is the other place.

I guess in La Jolla, when it comes to cheapy fried chicken, KFC or Popeyes are the only choices.

According to Zagat guide, Chick-fil-a is the best chicken fast food chain in America.

shnjb, in San Diego, you can get just about anywhere in 15 minutes by freeway. Hash House isn't that far at all, especially compared to the routine 45 minutes it takes to get anywhere in LA.

Anyways, if you can stand the drive .... it's worth it, great date place as well.

A little place outside Clarksdale, Mississippi. Non-descript white block building with no sign. You could get fried chicken, biscuit, two veggies, sweet tea and a piece of pie for $4. After eating that fried chicken, nothing else will taste like fried chicken to me.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Knotts Berry Farm and Mrs Knotts Fried Chicken!

There is a To-Go shop right next to the Restaurant (with free parking).

The chicken is bolied first and only fried for a short time, so it is not very greasy at all.

very good chicken, and worth the trip, or you can even go the the Restaurant for breakfast and get fried chicken and eggs....

yummy!

There's one over there in Hollywood on sunset. Right before Sunset and Hollywood Blvd diverge. They serve chicken.
