Dumb question but do Ariza and Farmar know each other? |

sorry I don't see how this helps the Lakers, dude averages 4 or 5 points and shoots 60% on his free throws, unless his defense is otherworldly, I would rather have Cook & Evans... |

I vaguely remember reading something in the summer about the Lakers having interest in Ariza but I don't remember where or when. |

Lakers major upgrade defensively. Ariza will play sparingly, but he'll play instead of Radmanovic against the small forwards... sweet. Sasha is now the No. 2 shooting guard... guess I win the bet with Lanny that Sasha will finish the season as the No. 2 guard, not Mo.
Best news of the day. Addition by subtraction. |

This trade would be "win-win."
1 - We'd get a long, athletic, high-energy, defensive-minded SF - EXACTLY what we need. I've been watching him play the last 2 years - he can defend. He's "disruptive."
2 - No more Schlumpy!!!!
Win-win baby!! |
Exactly.. This is what we've been asking for in the Laker "needs" thread- a defensive minded 3. Hope this deal pans out for us. Thank you FO. _________________ #2 Lonzo

Pretty surprised. Great move by Mitch. I was waiting long for a small yet significant move like this. |

That's exactly what I was thinking. Cook was drafted to play along with Shaq, and if Shaq had stayed, he would have worked better. But once Shaq left, his usefulness has waned.
Now playing along a low post player like Dwight will really show off Cook's game.
I am glad Cook is gone, but I wish him well in a better situation.
But toughness?
Hey, Eric, had you heard about this earlier? Has this been in the works for a while? Anything else going on you want to share with us? |
Cook does fit in well with how the Magic play, but so do Turkoglu and Lewis.
In other words, he's redundant for them too. |

We scored 134 points without them : we didn't need scorers who can't defend and can't pass.
Ariza will improve our new concept of pressure defense and fast-break.
He is not here to duplicate Vlad or Luke, but to compliment them.
Then, look at the financial part of the deal...

They said they wanted a 4 so that when Turkoglu goes out Lewis(who plays 40+ minutes a night) can slide to the 3. Even if Cook is redundant in his skill set, you can't play the starters 48 minutes a night. |

Offensively, Ariza does just fine. He's not a 3 point shooter, but he does something really crazy to prevent that from being a liability - he doesn't take them.
He shot over 50% last season, so he'll be fine.
Defensively, it's an upgrade. A big one.
Look at it this way, before the trade, if a swingman was torching the team, who did Phil have to bring in off the bench to try and cool them down? Nobody. |

Damn great trade for Mitch. He's finally thinking of getting defence minded players. He's making it that much harder for me to hate him. _________________ Paul Pierce needs help, he gets KG and Ray Allen

trading mo means sasha, or karl, or critt become kobe's backup. why do the lakers want "filler"? they have the leagues best bench. why mess with the chemistry just so you can change the names?
sorry, ariza's had years to show what he's going to turn into and he hasn't done much developing since isaiah took him in the 1st round after 1 college year, several years back. |
you might be looking at this wrong...did you notice who we traded away? |

And as long as he can guard the 2 and 3, he'll fit in just fine in the 2nd unit when playing next to Walton. Luke is technically a guard in our offense. |

WALTON!!!!
Just Kidding...
Do the names of Bruce Bowen, Peja and SBattier give you a hint or tell you something ?
They had been the Dagger's owner in our 3 loses...
BTW Good job, Mitch! |

This is a long thread and Im kind of short on time right now but, did anybody mention the financial incenive of this trade? We dump Brian Cook's 3.5 million per year for the next three years and we gain a 3.1 million expiring contract! That reason alone is enough to make this a solid well thought out trade by Mitch. This year, we would pay Cook 3.5 million and Evans 1.6 million. That means, save 2 million this year AND receive a 2 million trade exception. On top of that, Ariza is the defensive type wing player we could realy use. Great trade! |

if we traded cook for cash and a bag of cookies, i would be happy. as to mo, he played behind kobe, and was decent at best. i like the trade because of ariza's defensive skills and ability to finish on the break.
great trade for the lakers. |
