PostPosted: Wed Nov 08, 2006 12:11 am    Post subject: TWOLVES -at- LAKERS - 11/7 - Thoughts and :-)) ratings

The Prodigy... Andrew Bynum dominated the game on both ends of the floor with 20 points, 14 boards, 3 blocks and a number of shot alterations. He anchored the paint and was rewarded with a few more touches on the offensive end. He was the clear game-changer in the Lakers 95-88 victory over the TWolves.

The Lakers PGs were a trainwreck tonight. Smush had several horrible possessions down the stretch. Phil jumped on him in a timeout and shortly later Smush found himself with the ball in his hands and the clock ticking down . He buried a much-needed three-pointer. Sometimes when Smush, Vlad and Mo have the ball this season we get some pretty sketchy possessions. That seemed to be the case throughout the fourth quarter.

The TWolves don't push the throttle as much as our previous opponents, but they still won the battle on the break 14-4 as we gave up 22 turnovers and 23 points off of them. After facing the TWolves last year on the second game of back to backs, it's nice to see them on the receiving end of the schedule.

The night belonged to Bynum. He even logged the play of the game with a monstrous help D block on Mike James. That got you out of your seat, and later Staples would honor him. "It's the first time fans have chanted my name," he said. "It felt pretty good. This does wonders for my confidence. Day by day, I feel I'm growing as a basketball player."

Kobe -- -- I liked what Kobe was able to do in this game despite his limitations. He was a lot smoother in the offense and still hid his physical weaknesses. He's certainly not himself and still had some turnover issues, but it was a smoother game. He lit into guys in a shoot around today to get them to carry the team and not depend on him. That may have helped a bit, too. He finished with 17 points on just 5-7 shooting (7-7 FTs, 0 three attempts). He also had 6 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and 5 turnovers in 35 minutes. Nice push out in transition to ignite a break and score by Luke. He worked off Luke in the post, got the return feed and scored a layup. He buried a 19-footer off a quick catch-and-shoot. He stole a pass at midcourt like a free safety, then lost it on a cross over. He attacked off the dribble, took contact and chucked in a 15-footer with one hand for the And-1. He lost the dribble, got it back, spun and scored a layup with some skillful footwork. He dribbled into KG's double team and it resulted in a dunk the other way. He dribbled into a triple team then threw it away. Wow, he threaded the needle to Luke who popped out from behind some screens under the hoop to find the ball there for a layup. He hit Smush filling the lane on the breakaway for a layup. He attacked off a Bynum screen, drew FTs and made both. He worked the two-man game with Bynum, threading a bounce pass between defenders and Bynum dunked. He spotted Luke flashing to the post and Luke hit his turnaround. He drew FTs in transition, unable to impose his physical skills, he worked back and forth off the dribble until getting contact at the hoop. He swished a double-clutch jumper from 16 feet away at the wing. Guys were still looking for Kobe to bail them out with the shotclock low, but they had to step up and throw some punches themselves. Some sketchy moments, for sure. "We as a team, we know we have to do this together," Kobe said.

Odom -- 8) -- Win ugly. That's what LO wanted us to do this season. Well, they pretty much did that tonight after the second unit blew a big lead. Lamar had his hands full with KG and didn't seem to be able to impose his game on either end with as much effectiveness as you'd like to see. He led the Lakers with 43 minutes, so we will see how that comes to play tomorrow night. He scored 15 points on 5-13 shooting, grabbed 9 boards, and dished 4 assists with 4 turnovers. He missed a pull-up jumper in the middle of the lane off the tip and missed a jumper off a kickout from Bynum. He found Smush for an open three off dribble penetration. He set up Bynum under the hoop for a reverse layup. He lost the ball, attacking off the dribble. He cleaned up a Farmar miss on the break with a layup. He drew FTs on an attack down the lane. He picked up a weak charge call when Davis dove off a springboard and screamed, total flop. He drained a three from a couple feet behind the line straight away. He swished a jumper from the sideline standing on the three. He tracked down a deflected pass, peaked at the shotclock which was down to 2, then turned and heaved up and in a 35-footer from the wing. He hit a crazy runner with his left in the middle of the lane in crunch time.

Bynum -- -- He imposed himself on the game...and on both ends. That is what you want to see. Heck, that is what I was hoping to see...next year. To get it this early, wow. The group of instant gratification fans out there don't know how lucky they are to have a bigman come so far in such a short time. Bynum dropped some more career highs in this one. He scored 20 points on 6-9 shooting and 8-10 FTs (also impressive from where he was last year...and as we've mentioned in the past, freethrows will be a big part of his game). He grabbed 14 boards, controlling the defensive glass throughout the game. He blocked 3 shots, but altered more. And...he had no fouls and no turnovers in 29 minutes. Just a superb, all-around game, leading the Lakers in points, boards and blocked shots. Nice awareness early on of a cutter on the D end, he jumped off his man to reject the shot off dribble penetration. Next time down, James thought twice about attacking and carried the ball one on one against Bynum. Superb job using the rim as an ally between defenders he put in a reverse. He drew a clear out foul on Davis contesting his shot. Nice move but no score when the offense stopped cutting, Bynum worked his way into the post from the wing and got a left handed hook off from a couple feet away and was tapped. He sealed his man well next time down the court, took the entry, then spun to the middle for the short hook at the front of the rim. He took the entry feed, held it up high and shed defenders for an easy layup. He threwdown with both hands when Farmar got an offensive board and fed him from under the hoop. Nice job controlling the defensive glass to start the third, grabbing several boards as we went on a run. He pivoted and powered up against Blount to draw FTs, he made one. He drew FTs down low, he made both. He battled with Luke to keep a possession alive with some great effort by both, Bynum finally got the ball, drew a foul and applauded his and Luke's effort, he made both FTs. He had the Get-Out-of-Your-Seat Tivo Replay of the Night with a block on Davis, getting up around the top of the square and rejecting him badly (when Bynum can get a couple of steps he comes out of the rafters sometimes). He fought for a defensive board on one end, then Kobe fed him in the post against KG on the other end, Drew gave him a little up fake to freeze him, continued his pivot, then hit the jumphook in the lane. Big swat on one end on James with under a minute left, then he drew FTs on the other, he drained both clutch FTs. He did the same thing again on the other end, contesting a shot, controlling the ball and drawing FTs, he made one. Great game and he left to a standing O. "He just works so hard in the summer time," Kobe said. "He came back this season and he's ready." Kobe also said these minutes now will be huge for Bynum come playoff time.

Smush -- -- He just seemed to be struggling all game long, right up until he hit a clutch three-pointer after Phil got on him for several previous possessions. Smush socred 11 points on 4-11 shooting (poor 1-4 FTs). He had 2 assists with 1 turnover and 1 steal in 32 minutes. Weak D, not hustling around a screen to give James all day on a jumper. Poor decision, trying to thread a needle on a pass and it resulted in a turnover not running the offense. He swished a three on a kickout from Lamar. He passed up a shot too late in the shotclock, tried to attack and it resulted in a shotclock violation for the team. Poor angle on D, giving up penetration and a foul on Turiaf. He flashed to the strong side and hit a hook on the baseline. Nice pickoff, anticipating an entry pass. He filled the lane and finished the break with a layup. He came up with a loose ball in the lane and pushed out the break, he drew FTs and made one. Nice job drawing FTs by slowing down and letting a defender run up his back, but Smush bricked both freebies. He missed a layup on an attack. In a key stretch in the fourth, he forced up a jumper, missing badly, he then missed an open three, then airballed a finger roll in the lane (hideous). Finally, he was stuck in a bad position with the ball in his hands about 29 feet from the hoop straight away and with the shotclock going down, so he drained a big three with 2:31 left to push a 4-point lead to 7.

Walton -- -- Luke continues to show a much improved game. He may retain that starting job all season. He finished with 14 points on 7-11 shooting, 9 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks...filling up the stat sheet in 35 mintues. He hit a baseline jumper in transition and then an elbow jumper. He got blocked on his next attempt and missed a wing jumper. Good find, hitting Kobe off the cut for a layup. He missed a short jumper on the baseline and scored his rebound off the glass. He hit a one-hander from 9 feet away. Kobe hit Luke with a pass from 26-feet out, on the money off Luke's backside cut, and he scored a layup. Out on the break, Luke froze KG in the lane with a ball fake and finished while still in the air. He came up with a loose ball in the lane and quickly pushed out the break and we got a score. He flashed to the post, took the entry feed and quickly hit his turnaround.

Turiaf -- -- Some average minutes for Ronny. He led the Lakers with a -4. I think that number says more about how well Bynum was playing versus anything Ronny did. Bynum led the Lakers with a +14. Turiaf lost the ball in front of the rim, losing a sure layup. He cleaned up a miss by Farmar with a putback. He gave up position in the paint and a score, he wanted the three-second call. Ronny finished with 2 points on 1-1 shooting, 5 boards, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 13 minutes. Pretty big difference tonight with Bynum on the floor vs. Ronny. Consistency will be the key for both of them.

Radmanovic -- -- Some really sloppy passes in the second half. Vlad needs to make his passes a little quicker, as well as just get some experience in knowing what to look for in this offense and where the breakdowns can come from. He finished with 7 points on 3-8 shooting, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. He had 3 turnovers and no rebounds in that time. He had to defend both Jaric and KG at times, not the best match ups for us, for sure. He fed the post, cut baseline past KG, took the return feed and scored a layup. He posted up and hit jumphook from the middle of the lane. He came from the weakside to save a sure layup with a nice shot contest. He sank a jumper from the top of the key. He blocked Davis from behind. He drew FTs on a reverse attempt, he made both. He was in the thick of our problems in the fourth, when all 3 of his turnovers came.

Evans -- -- He knocked down a three straight away. He hit a wing jumper off the two-man game. He missed a turnaround from 12 feet out and wanted the foul. He got called for a clear out foul and it erased a score (didn't look like he used his off arm to his advantage). He finished with 5 points on 2-5 shooting, 1 board, 1 TO and 2 fouls in 13 minutes.

Cook -- -- Only 6 minutes from Cook in this game, during which he managed 4 points on 2-4 shooting and 1 assist. He took a feed on the left block and spun in a layup. He pumpfaked, took a couple dribbles then hit a jumper from the elbow for his other score.

Farmar -- -- A day after Phil gives him some props, Jordan had his weakest outing of the season. He hit the rim on a 50-footer at the first quarter buzzer, so you can probably take that one off the stat sheet. He didn't score in 16 minutes, going 0-7 (0-4 from three), but he had 3 assists, 1 steal and a board in that time. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He was blocked on a layup on the break, but LO cleaned it up. He crashed the offensive glass, came up with the board, then fed Bynum cutting for the dunk. He missed a three against the shotclock. Nice D on Hudson to knock a ball loose, but the TWolves recovered. He missed an easy score off a weakside cut, indecisive whether to bank or float it in, so he went in between.

Phil -- -- Not playing tonight, once again, Sasha and Shammond. When Kwame comes back, it seems one of those guys his headed to the inactive roster... The Lakers had a series of plays where they dribbled the ball away for a turnover or dribbled too much instead of shooting for shotclock violations at the end of the first quarter. That seemed typical for the kind of mistakes they've been making... Phil had Radmanovic in to cover KG late in the third and KG started going off. The TWolves also started to overplay the passing lanes and we didn't recognize it, throwing a number of picked off passes... The Lakers imposed their game on the TWolves nicely in the third, going on a 13-0 run at one point... The flow of the game seemed to hinge on whether or not Bynum was in the game. Phil went back to him late, despite some worry about Bynum's energy. Drew didn't disappoint. Phil made a late sub to allow Bynum to get an ovation from Staples... "With Andrew, we just keep feeding him things and hope he can keep reading defensively, and he can become a guy that can protect the lane for us," Phil said in the Times. "It's something we haven't had for a couple of years now, but he's the one we envisioned would be that kind of guy."... When the Lakers have Kwame and Mihm to throw out there, other teams will have their hands full with our bigs. Phil will have his hands full trying to divide up minutes. He thinks Bynum may be good for 8-minute stints and has been a bit leery about Bynum's screen-roll D when fatigued. He was, again, worried about that tonight, but Drew looked fine... The poor play by the second unit may have some effect on tomorrow's game as our starters had to log longer minutes that desired after having a 20-point lead...

caught the 2nd half just in time to see bynum doing damage esp. on the defensive end. he was challenging almost everything going to the rim, in the process altering a lot of shots- that was BIG. luke had a good all around game, as usual. i think odom did a good defensive job on kg.

thanks again DB!

Phil did an excellent job tonight, although he left Vlad in too long during that horrible stretch.

1. No Luke-Vlad-Cook frontline

and

2. No Aleksander Vujacic

!

dwayne casey on bynum:

"Kareem's done a heck of a job with developing him," Casey said. "Last year, he didn't even look like he belonged in the NBA. This year, he looks like he belongs.

bynum has got to be the front runner so far for most improved player.

kareem for coach of the year!!!

Bynum's impressed so much even Laker hater Rick Kamla is hyping him up. He was giving his man props for picking Bynum as most improved player before the regular season started (based on preaseason play) and Kamla thought that was out there. Now Kamla thinks it will happen and he's the frontrunner right now.

When the biggest of Laker haters are on the Bynum bandwagon - you know the Lakers have done something huge .....

Thanks DB!

You said it all about Andrew Bynum. He's improved so fast, it's shocking!

Thanks DancingBarry!

We did seem a little better at stopping guard penetration, but it still was a problem. Considering a rookie--although Randy Foye--sliced up our defense at times, it won't look good when other teams attack us in the same way.

From a positive view, it does speak volumes that Bynum can be the last line of defense and end up with no fouls at all.

I also thought we'd be lucky to see a game like this out of Bynum next year. There is no way I thought he'd be having games like this year 2...particularly this early on in the season. The injuries to Brown and Mihm helped make this possible. However even w/ them being injured, there was no guarantee he'd do this well. Many guys get lots of minutes for some reason or another...and do nothing w/ them. Bynum has met the challenge. It speaks well for the organization and how they have been handling him. It feels good having a legit man in the middle again. Hopefully he stays healthy.

I liked how Kobe didn't press things today...whether it be points or assists. He blended his game in w/ the strengths of the rest of the team as well as he can given his condition. So far, this team has shown they can score enough w/ out any one particular player carrying the load every night...the longer this wave lasts, the more dangerous they'll be come playoff time.

Walton is looking like one of the better role players in the entire league.

The sloppy passes by Rad really irritated me. He did it over and over again in a very short span of time. You'd think he wouldn't commit the same damn mistake back to back to back to back....I don't know where the (bleep) his head was at as all that was going on. A games worth of momentum was being destroyed in a few bonehead sequences.

Great recap as always DB!! I seems like the starters built a big lead and it was cut down by the 2nd unit. But, we held an opponent under 90 pts for the first time this year. Was that a product of:

a) the T'Wolves not really being a playoff team
b) the T'Wolves played the night before
c) the Lakers are improving
d) PJ didn't play around with lineups

I'm hoping it is "c"

Thanks!

Thanks again, DB. What else can we say about Bynum? He was very impressive and is developing very quickly in front of our eyes. Our lead was shrinking, but thankfully Smush hit a big three to push the lead to six and then Odom hit a little runner in the lane with about a minute left to push the lead up to five. Kobe only took seven shots and made five, which is seventy one percent. He's getting back gradually. It'll be interesting to see how minutes are divided when Kwame and Mihm return. Also, I'm curious to see how we respond tonight in a back to back situation on the road. We haven't had much success in the Rose Garden in the past. On that note, I heard that Brandon Roy will not play tonight.

Pleasure to hear that Bynum has done so well. I was only able to watch most of the first half on the replay.. unfortunately.

However, I couldn't help but notice...

Anyone think Cook was playing for a contract extention? Seems like since he got it, he hasn't been the same player...

Just to play devil's advocate (because I agree with you), maybe his confidence has been affected by the play of Bynum and Turiaf...his minutes have.

The fact he's been brought off the bench to play center hasn't helped his game either.

Nah...I don't think that's the case with Cook. He really hasn't gotten the minutes he needs to produce. It looks like he'll get sketchy minutes throughout this season, so he'll have to make the most of his PT while he's out there.

Great breakdown... Didn't get to see the game, but caught the highlights. Bynum was impressive. Even Phil made a reference to shaq when talking about Bynum.
