Actually, you could pretty much put any Mercedes and BMW after 2003 on that list as well.

no no, this is is for the worst of both worlds, i.e., a piece of machinery that is BOTH expensive AND unreliable in the absolute sense.
Benz and Beemers are just expensive but at least they are pretty reliable and their worksmanship and material quality are high. So although the cost of ownership of a Benz or BMW is probably higher than say a Lexus or Acura, Benz and BMWs are generally reliable. I would not put Benz and Beemers in the same class as those cars above!
I'm however surprised that a Navigator beat out a Jaguar to get on that list! Who would have thought. |

Add Audi to that list.
Too bad Range Rovers suck in reliability. They look so pimp though. Not to mention they use a lot of the bimmer parts (for better or worse). _________________ "It's just fo' decoration! That's it and that's all, man; we do it fo' decorations." -Lil Sis |

Benz and Beemers have had electrical problems for years.
Their quality has been comprimised to keep up with production, and that was admitted by MB CEO last year.
Really, not as reliable as you might think. After 2002, it was downhill from there.
Why do you think so many owners keep trading in their cars or turning in their leases every 3 years?
They know what's coming when it comes to maintenance.
You wouldn't like 6 Technical Service Bulletins on your brand new 2006 Mercedes E350, would you? _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Add bimmer Steptronic issues to that list.
"Lifetime" transmission fluid my ass.
Did I mention the engine stalling?
The X5's had fan problems which sometimes caused the engine to catch fire.

I agree about their worksmanship and material quality but I don't quite agree about the reliability part.
I suggest you check out this link... ConsumerReports Reliability Survey _________________ "It's just fo' decoration! That's it and that's all, man; we do it fo' decorations." -Lil Sis |

On the news, it was mentioned that Jags are losing money and may be discontinued. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that." ~~Martin Luther King Jr.~~ |

I agree, I would also add jaguar and cadillac (especially escalade) to the list. _________________ "I was laying myself on the line by saying, if this doesn't work in three to four years, if we're not back on the top then I will step down because that means I have failed,"

The new XK should get them over the hump.
Too many people love Jags overseas to have them completely discontinued. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Some people just buy cars for its look or pimp status. I have a friend who bought a Range, and he loves it, but he also have heard about the reliability issue, he didn't care though. When you have money to spend and you don't mind spending you won't mind the issues as much. |

i think all these people who buys these SUVs are somewhat responsible for the increase in gas prices. You turn the corner just after you leave the gas station in one of these whack ass escalades and yur down to half a tank. I have a 6 year old corolla. No problems yet, gas mileage is great. _________________ Thank you, Kobe. We love you. |

And sometimes, people actually use SUVs to their full ability.
I don't see the point. Vans. SUVs. Some families need room and they all suck gas anyway. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

seriously. I know we all want cool cars someday. Preferably sports cars that are gas guzzlers. Mustangs, Escalades, H2s. But, if im taking a trip to vegas (a 6 hr. drive for me), id stick with my corolla. _________________ Thank you, Kobe. We love you. |

i love bimmers....older models and base models are the worst though. I would reccomend the M3 or the M5 to anyone (newer than 02) . M6 i wouldnt touch til next year because this is its 1st year run...give them one year to fix all the kinks!!!!
Range Rovers are the worst when it comes to maintenance costs. Lemons, just like jags. _________________ Music is my medicine |

I love the '03 M5 and '06 M5.
A shame the East Coast has far more open roads...
I just want Italian styling with Japanese reliability and German engineering.

I love my BMW it is my second one since I drive about 32,000 miles a year. I adore them though. I have only had the three series but knock on wood, no problems! Plus I love the dealership I go to. |

That's why I bought my Lexus over other name brand cars...
I don't think it's worth it to spend $75,000 on a car that sits in the shop half the time. I know someone who learned the hard way when he bought his brand new BMW 745i in 2003... |

I have a '77 Mercedes 6.9 which was the fasest sedan (top speed) ever made by Mercedes and it is a crazy expensive car to maintain, but I have driven everything from Lambos to Bentleys and this thing still raises the hair on my neck.

The feel of the 06 m5 in day to day driving is very jerky and annoying, it fully redeems itself under the sport mode on the open highway. I haven't driven the car extensively so I cannot give a complete in and outs of it, but my initial impression was I would not want it as a daily driver. The e39 m5 is the chariot of god, never have I driven such a balanced sedan in my life. |

I think Japanese cars have come pretty close to meeting all above you mentioned. Their designs have significantly improved and they're almost on par with the Germans in terms of engineering. And we all know they're reliable.
Actually at this point, the Japanese may have even slightly outdone the Germans in engineering thanks to their hybrid technology. But, perhaps in the future, BMW will finally bring out the hydrogen-powered cars, which I think has a better future than the hybrid.
Also, I'm sure you've heard of the Lexus LF-A, which is supposed to go against the exotics like the Lambo Gallardo and Porsche Carrera GT.
So, they're getting there. _________________ "It's just fo' decoration! That's it and that's all, man; we do it fo' decorations." -Lil Sis |

im thinking of leasing my parents a bmw 525i by the end of this month. birthday present for my dad. i dont know crap about cars so i wouldnt know if that car is a piece of crap or not. any objections or reasons why i shouldnt buy that car for him? any info would be appreciated.
im looking to lease for 3 years, probably put down $3k and dont want my payments to be over $600/month. i want to get my dad a nice "status" car. like i said, im not much of a car buff so any recommendations or info on what car i could get in that price range, places where i could get a good deal, stuff like that... would be much apprecaited. im leaning towards the 525i but any bmw or benz would be fine. my dad loves those two makes so i have to get either a benz or bmw for him. i checked out the 500 series last week and it looks pimp enough for my dad. |
