Playoff Push Brings Less Rest for Weary
By Peter Yoon, Times Staff Writer
March 22, 2006

The Lakers returned home from a three-game trip Tuesday afternoon, but there was no rest for the weary.

Coach Phil Jackson called for a film session in order to hammer out a defensive plan for tonight's game against Sacramento. The Kings are tied with the Lakers for the seventh playoff seeding.

So the team went directly from the airplane to its practice facility in El Segundo for some brief but important classroom time.

"We had to get focused on our last meeting with Sacramento and look at some of the things we did," Jackson said. "It was a real disappointing defensive effort by our team. So we talked a lot about that."

Lakers notes: L.A. gets painful film session
By Vincent Bonsignore, Staff Writer

It was straight from the plane to the classroom for the Lakers Tuesday as Phil Jackson called an afternoon film session immediately following a long flight home from Boston.

The unusual move - players typically get the rest of the day off after cross-country flights - is a clear sign how important Jackson views tonight's home game against the Sacramento Kings. The Lakers led the Kings by a half game for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff standings before Tuesday's games, and Jackson is apparently looking for any edge he can get in the race to avoid top-seeded San Antonio or Dallas in the opening round of the playoffs.

Or worse, missing the playoffs entirely.

The film of choice wasn't pleasant - the groggy Lakers watched footage of last week's 114-98 blowout loss to the Kings at Arco Arena - but obviously necessary.

"It's crunch time," Smush Parker said. We have to do whatever it takes to get ready for the playoffs."

The theme was defense, or more specifically avoiding the countless mental lapses that enabled the Kings to score 114 points after scoring just 85 when the two teams met in a 106-85 Lakers' victory on Feb. 23.

"We basically went over every defensive possession that we had the last time we played them," Lamar Odom said. From the first score to the last score,"
