The Role Players... With Kobe having a poor perimeter game most of the night, the Lakers role players played to their collective strengths and ground out 100 points on the road against the Spurs. The Lakers gave the effort on both ends all 48 minutes tonight.

The Spurs were coming off a win against the Suns, while the Lakers got a night to rest up. The Lakers jumped on them early, and even though they played with some great effort...they played with smart effort. Their offensive execution was done with purpose. They posted up Tony Parker with Smush or Manu with Lamar. They ran some of their Tri sequences about as automatic as we've seen all season. Kobe didn't take a shot for the first half of the opening quarter and we had built a lead.

In the second quarter, the Laker D locked down with some of their best rotations and switches of the season. They were continually in front of the Spurs, holding them to just 13 points in that quarter. After a strong first half of executing on both ends to build a lead, they kept the effort up after the half. ESPN, typically, does a hack job on this game by highlighting Kobe...but Luke, Kwame, and Smush played great two-way games. The difference tonight was the role players.

"The Spurs are a strong team with a deep bench," Phil said, "so this is still a good win for us and probably tough for them to digest."

Kobe -- -- As mentioned, his perimeter game was off a bit in this one. However, when that wasn't consistently there for him in the final quarter, he attacked the rim instead for reverse layups or dunks. He scored 29 points on 11-29 shooting and had 4 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals in 43 minutes. He took his first shot six minutes into the game and got tapped. He pushed up the break and flipped it to Cook for an open jumper. He threw a lob out of a timeout to Odom for a layup. He split the double team, drew contact on Rasho and muscled in an And-1 (made the FT). He set Bynum up for FTs (should have been a dunk, but Bynum bobbled the ball). He drew a reach on Horry and hit both FTs. He attacked across the lane, hung and got a left-hander to drop. He attacked Rasho off the dribble, the D collapsed, Kobe hung in the air and flipped in the reverse with 1 on the shotclock. We failed to get the ball to Kobe in the post in one sequence, he finally came to meet the passer, got the ball, turned and hit a long jumper as the shotclock buzzer went off. He curled off the baseline, reversed direction again to lose Bowen and powered in a layup over the help D. He buried a long wing three over Manu. He missed several shots up against the clock in the first half. He found Smush on the same backdoor play they ran for Lamar and we got a layup to start the second half. He fed Smush on the break for the layup. He airballed a jumper and glared at a ref. Bowen was clutching him in the post, Kobe gave him a shot with an elbow and then missed a short turnaround. He missed a long three. He was called for a flagrant foul in the lane on Barry who hit the floor hard (the Spurs got 5-points off that trip when Manu got an And-1). "It was just normal contact," Barry said after the game. "I don't think it deserved to be a flagrant." Phil sat him for a rest. Later, Kobe lost the dribble in the post for a turnover. He slipped on the floor and missed a jumper. He attacked, saw Luke cutting on the baseline and hit him for a dunk. He missed another jumper. He called for the high pick and roll, attacked past Duncan and scored a reverse using his speed well. He had Duncan on a switch, blew past him on the baseline, got hit in the head with no call and spun in a reverse. With the shotclock running low, no one moving, Kobe got the ball in the corner, deep on the baseline and hit a fallaway from a tough angle with 5 minutes left in the game. After missing a jumper, Luke got the rebound and we called a timeout...out of which we ran a weave type of play, Kobe up faked and attacked for a two-hand jam. He missed another good look, Kwame got it back and Kobe made his next one. "I didn't shoot well for three-fourths of the game," Bryant said in the AP. "I've had some games like that where I don't start off well, but I know if I stay within the game and keep shooting I can get hot at the end."

Odom -- -- Mr. Near Triple Double put together another solid game with some heavy lifting. He played all but 39 seconds in this game. He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting, hitting key shots when the Lakers needed it. He pulled down 8 boards, dished a team-high 9 assists and had a team-high 2 blocks. Lamar worked the post against the smaller players with more frequency and we got him the ball with more frequency. He posted up Manu on the first play of the game, got the high entry, drew a double and kicked to Cook for the open 16-footer. He drained a wing three off the pinch post with Mihm. He scored on an alley-oop lob from Kobe. He posted up, drew a double and kicked it to Sasha for a three. Great help D rejection on Parker to prevent a layup. He also had a nice contest on Bowen, who had turned and tried to shoot high over Lamar and airballed. Lamar found Kwame beating Duncan down the floor he fed him for a dunk. Manu went down on a flop, Lamar stepped around him and scored a layup. He set up Mihm for a score with a high pick and roll pass. He rattled in an elbow jumper with the shotclock low. He crossed over Finley going to his right and scored a layup with his left. He found Luke in the corner for a three. He attacked from the wing, reversed direction and scored an And-1. He took Manu off the dribble, spun in the lane, drew the D and found Kwame who was fouled for FTs. Nice help D swat at the rim to save a layup from Barry.

Mihm -- 8) -- He and Kwame make a pretty solid duo defensively on Duncan. Mihm played 19 minutes and scored 6 points on 3-8 shooting and grabbed 6 boards in that time. He pulled down an offensive board and scored for two of his points. He backed his man down in the post, then hit a left-handed jumphook from a few feet away. He got tapped on several shots. He finally scored again on a high pick and roll feed from Lamar, which he put in while still in the air.

Smush -- -- Tony Parker had 10 points on 4-9 shooting and 3 assists in 32 minutes. Smush had 18 points on 6-12 shooting, 2 assists and 3 steals in 39 minutes. He outplayed Tony tonight. Certainly, Tony could have been a little gassed, but the Lakers made Tony play on both ends unlike the previous game. This is what Payton would do, take Tony in the post and make him work. Smush did that effectively on several occasions and he scored with ease. On our second score of the game, we went to Smush in the post where he overpowered Tony easily and scored off the glass. He backed down Parker off the dribble and overpowered him again for another score off the glass. That can be a big weapon for us in the Tri against the Spurs if we choose to exploit it with purpose. Smush had a quick help D reach on Duncan to strip him and push up the break. Later, he attacked the lane, blew past Duncan and scored a layup. Beautiful weakside curl cut out of the Tri while we were cycling though the offense and he scored a layup. He attacked strong off the dribble, drew contact and got to the line where he made both FTs. He had 10 points at the half. On the first play of the second half, he got the backdoor lob from Kobe and scored a layup. He stole the ball from Finley who had numbers on the break, he gave it to Kobe, got it back and scored a layup. He had a couple of wild forays in transition where he came up empty. He drew a couple of FTs at the end of the third and made both. Nice recognition with under two minutes left he spotted Kwame for the alley-oop dunk. Great steal, anticipating a pass to the corner. He knocked down a couple late FTs. Great two-way game from Smush tonight.

Cook -- -- Going up against the Spurs isn't a great match up for Cook. Phil still went with him so that we could keep our execution smooth...as that Kwame/Mihm lineup doesn't click too well at times. Cook finished with 6 points on 3-6 shooting and 3 boards in 17:39. He nailed an open 16-footer straight away on a Lamar post kickout. He knocked down an open wing jumper on the break. He missed an open three. He drew a charge on Manu with some nice help D. He popped out to the elbow on the weakside and hit a jumper.

Kwame -- -- Happy Birthday, Kwame. He wanted a W and went out an earned it. Kwame has a niche in playing some excellent D against some of the better bigmen in the game. After a solid game against Duncan in our previous matchup, he outplayed Duncan tonight. Duncan had 12 points on 12 shots and 4 boards in 32 minutes. Kwame had 10 points on 4-4 shooting, 8 rebounds and 1 block in 25 minutes. If you have to go through the Spurs to win the Western Conference, Kwame holds a certain value to your team when he can defend like that. He played his role and he played it well tonight. He had a nice offensive board, outmuscling Duncan and it led to a layup by Smush. He out ran Duncan down the floor and dunked like a freight train at full speed. Nice D on a switch on Manu, it should have been an offensive foul for a clear out, but Manu got a trip to the line. On the other end, Kwame grabbed an offensive board, backed down Horry and drew a foul, he made one FT. Nice double-handed roof job on Parker to get a stop. Another good contest, then he got the rebound. He showed some good timing waiting to pull a Smush miss off the rim, then went up, hung and hit high off the glass. Lamar set him up for FTs under the basket, he made one and Luke tapped on the miss on the second. He held onto a pass from Luke and muscled in a layup. Good hustle to track down an offensive board and it led to a Kobe jumper. Huge throwdown off a Smush lob with under two minutes left. Phil on Kwame: "He's getting close to adulthood, and maybe he'll overcome his juvenile delinquency," he said in the Express-News. "We marvel sometimes at his game. He plays great at moments. Other moments he'll miss a shot you think no one can miss. He has great reactions at times, but other times he looks like he's nailed to the floor."

Walton -- -- Luke continues to string together a solid stretch of games. Tonight, he played big on both ends...filling in for the absent Devean George quite well. He had his second career double-double, scoring 13 points on 4-9 shooting and grabbing 10 boards (4 offensive). He posted up Horry and hit a stepback jumper off the glass from the mid post, very nice...and an easy shot if he can get more of that position. Good hustle for an offensive board and it led to a Sasha three. He missed a layup on the break. Good D on his rotations early and he also got to a Barry three and forced an airball. He had one of the highlight plays of the game when he blew past Duncan on the baseline, got contact on Nazr, twished in the air and spun in a layup off the glass...very, very nice. He hit an open three in the corner off a Lamar feed. Great baseline cut when Kobe drew the D and found him for a dunk. He tapped out a miss of a Kwame FT for another possession. He missed on a post up fallaway. He then gave up an And-1 to Barry on the other end. He gave Kwame an interior feed and it led to points. Another huge offensive board off a long Kobe miss and we reset the offense. He knocked down a few FTs in the last minute. Great game by Luke, not only the double-double but some of his team D rotations helped stop easy shots.

Vujacic -- -- Sasha scored three points in this game on one offensive sequence. He missed his first three, got the ball back on a kickout from Lamar and sank his next three attempt. He had a couple of boards and played some decent D in the second quarter.

Jackson -- -- In with a little 1:24 left in the first quarter. Nothing to report.

Bynum -- -- He came in to match up with Rasho and played 3 minutes. He should have had a dunk off a pick and roll with Kobe, but he bobbled the ball, then got fouled and bricked both FTs badly. He got blocked by Horry on a dunk attempt (he will finish those in a couple years). Kobe drew three defenders on an inbounds, leaving Bynum open under the hoop and he dunked at the end of the first quarter.

Phil -- -- Lakers played Duncan straight up, instead of some of the doubles in the last game, and they didn't get hurt by Duncan or give up the endless threes. Props to Kwame and Mihm again for his their D on Duncan... Lakers went to Lamar and Smush in the posts to start the game. Clear purpose and intent in the offense... He went with a Smush, Sasha, Luke, Lamar, Kwame lineup in the second quarter that held their own... Lakers won the points in the paint battle 30-10 in the first half. Jerry Buss said the first half was "sensational". They won the points in the paint battle 56-26 at the end of the game... Good timeout with 3:36 to go in the game after the offense was stalling and we got an offensive board. The team needed to settle down a bit and execute. We ran a weave sequence out of the time out, Kobe up faked and attacked for a two-hand jam... From the opposing coach: "Offensive rebounding is always an emphasis for us," Popovich said. "But the Lakers got some in critical situations in the second half." (Credit Luke and Kwame, who had 4 a piece in the game)...

Can't say it any better. Defense does wonders! And who knew Luke still had any good games? Smush and Kwame had great games, but Lamar with his near triple double. I hope he is finally geting it, for no matter how brilliant Kobe is, the Lakers will only go as far as Odom goes.

Maybe this week is a truer indication of the things to come: Odom, Kwame filling their roles. But I mean, come on, when was the last time Kwame and Walton BOTH scored 10 points in a game? I don't know if both have done it on the same day in their entirety in the league.

Alot like the Hornets game, Kobe's contributions offensively seemed to
come at all the right times and in the right ways - even if he had a rough
night overall.

He led that first charge in the 2nd-quarter that first put us substantially
ahead, and then when the Spurs were gaining some momentum a few
minutes into the 4th he went on that second tear as well.

That said, I think it's a great thing for him to have that bad a game
overall and see that the plebians are willing and able to carry him through
it when they put their minds to it.

Excellent effort by virtually every Laker on the floor tonight. Aside from
that last Spurs game in L.A. it feels like our defense is coming back
together like it was in the beginning of the season (possibly better last
night).

Stellar job, DB. As always, I appreciate your recap more than anyone else's day after game day.

The guys looked great. No mental letdowns. Everyone played with confidence and with purpose. They almost had a swagger at times. Lamar looks like a different player in some ways. We've seen flashes of his talent all year, and now he's starting to "get it." He's put together some great games against the toughest competition out there. If Kwame can continue to be content in his roleplaying game, we will benefit so much and the fans will LOVE him! Great D by Kwame. Luke's game might have been a fluke, but I'll take it any day. Smush - all the guys really did a great job. Right on Lakers - good coaching, staff - it was a joy to see them on top again, even if it was only one night. I'm hoping for more, though....

Could it be that this team is gelling at the right time? For all the knocks on our level of talent, when these guys play to their potential they can be quite good. The consistency thing comes from being a young team but now that we're in the home stretch hopefully they have hit their stride.

Nice job DB! I appreciate your posts even more when I don't get to read them after every game.

My favorite was the play after the time out when Kwame beat everyone down the court for a slam. I had to replay it because he was so agile going up he almost looked like Smush. Maybe these are the guys that the Lakers staff sees in practice and that's why they didn't want to trade any of them. Imagine if they could actually get them to realize their potential and have Smush, Luke, Lamar, and Kwame playing at this level consistently. That would be a thing of beauty.

When this team put their minds to it, this is a very capable team. Beat both the Eastern and Western conference best teams, and conclusively!! If they make the playoffs, nobody would want to meet them in the first round!!!! Peaking at the right time?

Good Job.
Great win. Kobe, Odom, Smush, Sasha, Walton, and Kwame all had good games. This team is starting to gel at the right time.

The Lakers have beaten the EC's 3 best teams in Detroit, Miami and Cleveland. In order to say the same about the WC, they'll have to add Phoenix to the list, but it's certainly impressive to think about the fact that we've beaten the Mavs and now the Spurs.

-Good to see a Jim Jackson sighting
-Offensive rebounding!! 4 for Kwame, 4 for Luke

-Lamar nearly missed another triple double and was 6-8 on FG
-Andrew Bynum actually got to play and dunked it to end the QTR
-Kwames Birthday and he holds Duncan to only 12 points
-Executed out of timeouts for once
-Rim was unkind on Kobe's J but he attacked the paint beautifully
-Stellar team game tonight. Kobe ONLY dropped 29 and we won

Great win last night. 3 keys that I took most note of:

1. Kwame was allowed to defend Timmy straight up and everybody stayed home on the shooters. Not much else to say....Timmy only 5-12?? Great job, B-day boy!!

2. Forcing Tony Parker to have to play defense took him out of their offense. He's actually a terrible defensive PG if you're able to take it at him. The Lakers ran at least twice as many plays for Smush particularly early in the game to get TP on his heels and force Poppy to go to the bench early. Without TP running his typical layup drills every game, the Spurs were a lot more vulnerable.

3. Once again, the team did not fold because KObe was struggling with his shot. In fact, they used it to their advantage. So many times this year they would get caught Kobe-watching. But they seemed to have finally realized that if they want to watch Kobe, they need to buy a ticket and sit down. Guys like Lamar and Luke and Kwame positioned themselves for offensive rebounds and didn't wait for Kobe's shots to come off the rim before reacting.

We smoked them. Plain and simple. At a certain point in the 2nd quarter, it looked like WE were the contenders and THEY were the underdogs.

Odom was playing like an all-star, he was just everywhere: passing, making and organizing plays, hustling for rebounds and even scoring. Smush sometimes is too streeball-ish in the fastbreaks, but he was playing good in the halfcourt sets (BTW, I credit Smush's inconsistency to the fact that this is his first full season AND he's starting - the schedule is certainly tiring him, but once his body gets used to it he can be a VERY GOOD player in this league). Kwame's defense on Duncan was AWESOME, and while one can argue that he looks like he has fingerless hands on offense, he was doing GREAT on defense.

Tonight these guys made me proud.

DB- Awesome job as always
Nice to get a win at their home court
I heard they were 24-3 before we beat 'em last night
Phil said, "so this is still a good win for us and probably tough for them to digest." It was the Lakers poisoning

After about 45 horrendously empty games, he had to be due for something good.

At least he's hitting a good stretch at the right time.

 Dude, what are you talking about?? Luke has been terrible for the better part of the season. He was due for a good stretch, which he is having at the right time.

Hoopschick - I think Walton has had 2 good stretches now. First when he came into the seaon after that injury. He was a very good spark for us. Ask DB, I think he would remember best with the updates.

Then after that he got into a rut. Has had like 20-25 games where he rarely did anything positive. And his shot was just pathetic.

Now he's had 2 big games for the first time in ages.

You are right. He has been poor for too long this season. But that's why it's even more suprising that the has had 2 games like this now. We really needed it with Dev out.

NKPOG = Rest Of Team, with a special nod to Kwame since it's his Birthday.

Some nights Kobe's shot will be off (even though you know he will put it together in the 4th). Nice of the ROT to pick up the slack with perhaps the best offensive and defensive execution this year. Just look at the points in the paint - LA 56, SA 26.

The nice thing about the win is that the team showed they learned from their loss on Monday. Take advantage of Eva's boy in the post, let Kwame guard Timmy D straight up, make decisive cuts and challenge the 3's.

When everyone's involved, you don't mind LO taking only 8 shots because he's also dealing 9 assists.

Luuuke! Return of the Jedi continues. After that twisting, reverse, backhand flip layup, he is the Polar Kobe.

Smushie, an impressive couple of games on this roadie against quality PG's. After hitting the wall, it looks like he's got his second wind.

I think the team is starting to believe again, so no letdown on Sunday!

Smush was a thief, Kwame was a monster, Walton had a double-double, Lamar was pippen and Kobe was Jordan.

Kwame got his birthday gift, the Spurs on a platter. Going into San Antonio and coming out with a win is always excellent. That team has so much depth that the players don't get overworked. The Lakers played like it was a Playoff game. The Lakers looked like a Playoff team.

Thanks DB. I was out of town for this one so I didn't get a chance to see it. Thanks for the recap.
