I don't mind seeing an old player succeed, but I think there might be a lot of abuse and favoritism depending on how their career went down.

Immediately got concerned about how Smush might officiate the Lakers, given his unhappiness with his tenure (though it was by far the most successful period of his career).

Becoming a referee is a hard process that takes a long time and commitment. I don't think a former players would be particularly prone to abuse and favoritism. If they were, that would be common apparent pretty quickly.

Yeah it certainly takes time to learn how to get away with gambling teams and rigging games.

Good for him. I saw his interview after Kobe's death, and he was legitimately saddened/flustered and wished there was more resolution between them. Whatever beef or feud they had, I'm sure he was ready to quash it.

I will admit I was pretty hard on him. For a guy that went undrafted, it was quite an accomplishment to start 2 seasons in a row for the Lakers. One can argue they had a talent deficit, but still impressive nonetheless.
