Who the all time best Laker in defense?

I know there have been a lot of great Laker defenders in the past but in my opinion, it’s a contest between Kobe and Michael Cooper. Kobe been on the all-defensive team for 3 years and I think and Michael Cooper has been named defensive player of the year and well as part of numerous all-defensive teams throughout the years.

I think the nod goes to Cooper. Could Kobe stop Larry Bird as effectively as Cooper? I think Cooper's spider-like approach toward defense gives him the advantage.

Agree or Disagree? Or what other player comes to mind as the best Laker defender?

There are many differences between the two on the defensive end, IMO the largest being consistency... Cooper played some of the greatest defense ever seen nightly. Coop would lock down A,B, and C list players in games that meant nothing as well as games that meant the world.

Kobe on the other hand can be tenacious as hell but only for short stretches (a few games at a time), and usually only with marquee match-ups.

This is no knock to Kobe, he has to carry much more offensive load then Coop, plus Coop had the Magic man setting up his offense in perfect spots to help conserve energy as well. Kobe has no such luxury, neither did Michael Jordan (the greatest 2 way player ever), that's what makes MJ such a special player.

But I digress... Cooper was the greatest Laker defender ever, probably the best perimeter defender ever, and arguably the greatest defensive player to step on the court. Hard for anyone to match up to that.

WHOA!!! I was feeling your post up until that. Come on! The name Bill Russel ring a bell? And since you're going to say "you haven't seen him play, so how could you know?" I will also say Rodman. Could lockdown anyone from SG to C. He's MY choice for greatest Defender ever. What about Scottie Pippen? Never seen someone make Magic work as hard as Scottie did. Never saw Stockton work as hard has he had to against Pippen, either.

Coop is a great Defender, arguably top 5. But he DOESN'T belong in a best defender ever debate at all, IMHO.

Cooper, hands down, no discussion necessary. Best Laker defender, ever.

This shouldn't even be a debate. Coop was as good defensively as Kobe is offensively. Coop is definitely a top 5 defender of all time.

Coop was a great defender but lets not forget that he held less ofensive responsiblity than kobe. Kobe was the initator of the offense and the second option on the team. Coops man role was to defend and shoot 3's. Whereas kobe had a much larger role being that he was the second option on the team, the cluthch performer, and would also in many situations defend against the opposing teams best player. Its not really a good comparison.

on what grounds......brotha you need to go back and look at the 1998 ECF when scottie destroyed mark jackson. at 6'8 scottie was shutting down point guards on the regular. not only was his man to man great, his passing lane anticipation was crazy

Bill Russel was only 6'9', in todays game he wouldn't be all world, and Rodman could defend SG's?? LOL Thats laughable.

Kobe overrated? are you a hater? kobe made all defensive first team thrice and second team twice. Do you really have any basis in making such an ignorant statement?

The greatest offensive SF in NBA history (Bird) said Cooper was the greatest defensive player he ever went up against.

And, I'm concentrating on "one on one."

Pippen is the better team defender, but Cooper's better one on one.

man, pippen is as great a team defender as he is at defending one on one.

With respect to Larry's comment, when bird retired in 1992 pippen merely had 5 years of experience, since he entered the league only on 1988. So it is safe to say that pippen and larry did not really play on the same era, unlike coop and larry. Pippen was not even at his prime when he went up against larry legend.
