He probably gets burned on defense and makes some rookie mistakes, but at least you have a shooter that can have defenses forced to keep a body on him. It's one of our major weaknesses. We simply don't have a 2-way big wing, and we need to play AD at the 5 if WB is with us to have enough floor spacing. |
Sure, but Swider's shooting needs to be proven against NBA talent (with NBA length and quickness on close-outs) before we really know if his game scales to the NBA level.
There have been countless shooters whose game never translated to the pro level. Hopefully Swider beats the odds. |
He's making shots with guys in his shirt. Everyone knows he can shoot and he's making shots despite being defended tightly. How else did he have 2 4-point plays in the last game? |
If you vouch for him then I'll go along with you, but we both know NBA wings are way quicker, longer and more skilled that G-League/college defenders. |
I've mentioned before that I think the past 5 years have had deep NBA draft crops, where 1st round/2nd round types go UDFA.
Well, it's been 5 years of deep drafts. Those guys in his shirt and closing out on defense? They're NBA sized. He's not shooting over 6'4" dudes. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

How should we approach this situation?
Regular roster or keep in 2 way? |

No need to make a decision until all FAs are signed and trades are completed. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

They don’t run plays for Cole during SL. No picks, no cuts, no screens? _________________

I'd love to see more of the guards penetrate and kick out to Cole. In summer league however, guys just want to bring up their stats a bit. |

Dude is wide open for 3 and guys are looking him off and then turning the ball over as they drive aimlessly into the lane. _________________ Naz Reid or Brooks Lopez are a must in the 2023 offseason! |

Love the shooting. Still needs to develop obviously but especially on the defensive end.
Unless he's going for a chase down block, he offers no resistance on defense. He would have to be elite on offense to overcome the defense, and unfortunately he's not elite on offense.
Hoping he can be developed more on the defensive side, on and off ball this year. Maybe he can get called up later in the year. _________________ 💜💛 🏆 👀 🍖 #18!!! |

Yeah, I mentioned that in my writeup tonight. Not a lot of effective inside-out sequences (our pick and roll game is pretty poor). |

This teams pick and roll game is pretty AWFUL.
Swider can definitely shoot the rock under duress, if he improves defensively he could get PT with the big boys. |

If he shows much more, there's no doubt, that we or some other team will have a serious decision to make. |

Swider is apparently on a 2 way 2 year contract (Spotrac), he's not going anywhere for now... _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team ! |

In six SL games Swider has made 19-for-36 (52.7%) 3-point attempts. |

First dude in a long time w/ a form that looks excellent and they typically drill into the net. I dunno what he'll do against pros, but you expect ups and downs with every shooter. I'd be surprised if he doesn't do at least .400 w/ that form once he gets regular minutes (especially if hitting defended treys thus far hasn't been the result of a hot streak). I remember everyone and their dog calling Penberthy the best shooter they ever saw including Chick, Stu, and Kobe, but nu guy is the first one I can remember since we had Mike who even looks like a natural shooter. He has good form and is confident in his release. Kareem Rush didn't have either. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Imho the best shooter is the one whose shot goes in. I can careless how the form looks as long as it goes in. |

That goes without saying and I can also care less if a guy w/ weird form still hits buckets, but that's not my point. What I'm saying is that his form is one that will likelier than NOT (imo) make him a rare case of a draftee reputed for shooting treys actually becoming a good shooter with us as a pro. I know you can cite Jamaal and Shawn Marion as weird but effective forms, but excellent textbook shooting form at 3 is indicative of success moreso than what Ingram came to us with, e.g. Reggie Miller had a wacky release, but it still was honed over years of him focusing on jumpers at distance. Otoh, guys like Rice, Ellis, Houston, Allen had strokes that were destined to be effective at that distance. Reggie somehow made that bizarro form effective, but you can name a lot more weird 2 pt shooters than 3 pt specialists. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

I like how he plays. Obviously he won't stay this hot for awhile. It will be interesting to see what happens when he slumps a little bit. I don't expect us to run many plays for him as Summer League is only a bit more organized than pickup basketball. The team has had very little time preparing and practicing together. _________________ Formerly OC Lakerfan |
