(Inside the country backing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine - BBC Newsnight visits Serbia)

Quote:
As the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine approaches, the majority of people in almost every European country are opposed to the war... with one notable exception. Serbia has long been an ally of Russia, with close political and economic links.

It is thought that more than 70% of Serbs support Moscow over Kyiv. In the capital, Belgrade, pro-Russian graffiti can be seen on walls, while souvenir shops sell President Putin merchandise and even pro-war symbols.

So, where does it come from? Is it historical links between two Slavic and Orthodox nations, is it realpolitik or is something more insidious at play?

Working with the World Service Investigations Unit, BBC Newsnight's international correspondent Joe Inwood travelled to Serbia to investigate.

(Velshi: Trump created the opportunity for Putin in Ukraine)

Quote:
On July 25th of 2019, Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a now infamous phone call. “We are ready to continue to cooperate for the next steps.,” said Zelenskyy. “We are almost ready to buy more Javelins from the United States for defense purposes.” To which Donald Trump responded, “I would like you to do us a favor, though.” Anyone with an ounce of foresight could predict “I would like you to do us a favor” would not end well. Trump was impeached by the House but ultimately faced zero repercussions.

For Ukraine, the consequences were far more serious. Ukraine and its new untested, uncorrupt leader needed to be taken seriously on the world stage, in order to fend off Russian aggression. Instead, Donald Trump chose to try and leverage the situation for his own personal gain. The freezing of U.S. military aid and a shakedown by the President of the United States cost Zelenskyy in terms of power, respect and his authority against Vladimir Putin. Russia saw the undermining of Zelenskyy as an opportunity to invade, because Ukraine didn't appear to have the universal backing of the United States. And that’s on Donald Trump.

(Leon Panetta: Everything, including F-16s, ‘should be on the table’ for Ukraine)

Quote:
Leon Panetta, former Defense Secretary and CIA Director in the Obama administration and former White House Chief of Staff to President Clinton, joins Andrea Mitchel to react to President Biden’s speech in Warsaw following his visit to Ukraine with President Zelenskyy. “The trip is, in my mind, a total affirmation of United States world leadership at a very critical time. For the President to go to Ukraine, to take a very risky trip, and then to stand up not only saying that Kyiv is still standing, but also in Poland, that this is about freedom, and about democracy,” says Panetta. On the aid package for Ukraine, specifically regarding F-16’s, Panetta emphasizes, “I think we're at a stage where, frankly, everything should be on the table.”

(Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses Ukraine and West of starting war - BBC News)

Quote:
Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed the West for provoking the war with Ukraine, in a State of the Nation address.

"Ukraine and Donbas have become a symbol of total lies," Putin said, accusing the West of withdrawing from "fundamental agreements" and giving "hypocritical statements" as well as expanding the Nato defence alliance and "covering us with an umbrella".

"I want to repeat: it is them who are culpable for the war, and we are using force to stop it," he said.

Putin’s speech came ahead of the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Friday.
