Hope this really brings LA’s first “Super Team” back to life. This team had all the optimism (and pitfalls) of Super Teams that followed throughout the history of the game particularly age and injury but also not without a few chemistry issues as well. But still, the rare moments all 3 played together (72 regular season games and 35 Playoff games) they had many moments of looking like a real powerhouse even if it was a top heavy team chemistry.

Loved seeing this. It really brings back memories. One of my favorite teams ever, very fun to watch. I felt like I was back in the Forum again. They were mostly past their primes, but so much talent and very intelligent players they were.

The people who were disrespecting West in that other thread need to watch this footage from beginning to end.

Thanks dantheman! That was really nice to see. Obviously, the lack of material from the earlier days of the NBA is a sad state of affairs. But it also makes seeing the little gems that do pop up along the way that much more fun.

Much appreciated.

What were they saying in another thread? Either way doesn't West look awesome in that tape? He offers so many movements that are finally able to be seen with clarity and is quick with his fakes. Constantly got his defenders off balance prior to his jump shots

It was a general disrespect saying he was a bitter old man, who didn't deserve the lifetime tickets the Lakers had promised him because he had bad mouthed the Lakers.

Younger posters don't realize what West meant not only to the Lakers but to the NBA as a player.

The epic battles between West/Baylor vs the Celtics built the league.

West was truly a great player... not just a great executive.

Maybe if they watched that footage, they might see him for what he truly was.

Dang, West practically bleeds purple. Maybe what they didn't consider is he's probably critical because he cares. He went to war for the Lakers as much as one can in basketball at all levels, and probably more like a parent or grandparent critical of their kin when they see their kin not utilizing potential - it isn't due to bitterness it's due to wanting to see what they invested their lives in continue to succeed. I heard West doesn't get along with current execs and that's part of the problem but that certainly wouldn't mean his critical comments are some sort of sign he isn't a guy who cares about the Lakers.

Actually, Jerry West's image was used for the logo entirely by chance. It wasn't meant to honor him, and to this day I don't believe the NBA even officially acknowledges the logo was based on a photo of West

The NBA hired a logo designer to make a logo for the league. He needed some image to base the logo off of. The designer said he purposefully avoided using bill russell, because he was the most well-known player in the league, and the designer knew the logo should outlast any specific player.

The designer went through thousands of photos looking for an image. he chose Jerry West picture because he just like the particular photo. it wasn't done to honor West. When the commissioner was shown the logo, he loved it, but he had no idea it was based on West. it could have been anyone

That’s one of my favorite moments from the reel Dan put together. Who would have imagined Wilt icing a playoff win with two clean throws?

Awesome stuff. And yes folks, Jerry West was indeed that damn good.
