PostPosted: Fri Jun 25, 2021 8:39 pm    Post subject: Breaking - AEG sold their 27% stake in Lakers

Don’t know any details yet on value and most importantly who the buyer

https://www.sportico.com/business/sales/2021/anschutz-selling-lakers-stake-1234632799/

UPDATE

https://www.dailynews.com/2021/06/26/report-aegs-philip-anschutz-to-sell-lakers-stake-to-dodgers-owners/

The reported buyers are Mark Walter and Todd Boehly, among the owners of the Dodgers, who are coming off their own 2020 championship run. The sale would have to be approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors before becoming official.

The reported deal would make Walter and Boehly the largest minority owners of the Lakers, as well as give them the right of first refusal to a larger controlling sale, according to Sportico. Walter and Boehly are partners with Lakers great Magic Johnson through their ownership of the Dodgers.

My guess right now on who would have the cash is Jeff Bezos

If the team was valued at $5B. 27% would be about $1.4B. Assuming a market premium I’m guessing $2B

Or Patrick Soon-Shiong.

Anschutz was the second largest shareholder in the Lakers, behind the Buss family. He’d put AEG up for sale a few years ago, but ultimately didn’t sell. The $ he makes here is intended to be reinvested in AEG, which, by the way, still owns and operates Staples Center.

AEG had the right to buy if the Buss family ever sold. Now that AEG is out, hopefully the Buss family sells.

Haha. Would never want it to be. But just saying, a new owner doesn't always mean it's gonna be better 😃

But how about Stan Kroenke?

I doubt this will have any effect on what the Buss family will do.

It's nothing more than a big corporation moving money around to suit its strategic goals.

The only potential Buss issue here is if the right of first refusal doesn’t carry to the buyer, because that could free the way for Jim and John to be cashed out in some form.

Anschutz owns 27 % so this is a large chunk of a $5+ billion franchise. Buss family has 66 % so nothing changes for Lakers ownership now. Just minority new partners. Big long term question is whether Anschutz’ first right to purchase (if Buss family ever sells) transfers in sale.

Anschutz was the second largest shareholder in the Lakers, behind the Buss family. He’d put AEG up for sale a few years ago, but ultimately didn’t sell. The $ he makes here is intended to be reinvested in AEG, which, by the way, still owns and operates Staples Center.

Also worth noting. Anschutz had a seat on the Lakers board of directors. This became very relevant when Jim Buss tried to overthrow his sister, Jeanie Buss, a few years ago. Jeanie, prevailed. But it’s unclear whether the Anschutz seat will transfer as well.

I was just about to say that. That would be funny. I would be all for that, to see what comes of it. Lol that would be like a movie twist.

Since the Buss family has had the ownership, they have won how many rings? At least 11, right?

Just for comparison. Mark Cuban is seen as a great owner. He helped Dallas win one title in 21 years as owner. Since he won that title in 2011, the Mavs have not won a single playoff series.

Since then, we have won another title.

Yet folks still want Buss family drama and Buss to sell. Even after last year. Even after delivering Bron and AD. I just can not wrap my head around some of these comments.

Do teams just fluke rings? There has to be some sort of positive impact from the ownership. They may not be the best owners in the league or the brightest, but they value the most important thing, winning.

IIRC, AEG had a "first look" deal, not "first refusal." Even if it was "first refusal," those are rarely transferable.

If he had - or could raise - the billion plus to buy it, his dad would've left Jim in charge of the business side instead of the basketball side.
