This week I was helping my uncle move and he gave me some of his stamp collection. Probably not the good stuff. I would like to know more and if it has any value. A good portion of the stamps is from Israel and they are packed in several envelopes. There is also a bunch of Disney stamps in a binder but not from the US. They are from other countries. There are also some other foreign stamps in there too. My guess is a lot of these are from the 80s and 90s and some could be older. I want to sell them. I would appreciate any advice. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

Sorry I can't be a better help, but this appears to be one of those things requiring search engine legwork. I have a decent working knowledge of coins and paper money, but not stamps. Stamps, however, are quasi connected to coins. There will be stamp booths at large coin cons, but it's a dying generation who collected them. Firstly, before you throw anything away, make sure you DON'T see any red stamps w/ an upside-down biplane on it. That's the Jordan rookie of US stamps. 1918 carmine (red) Inverted Jenny.
Absent of that, my advice is to search for reputable dealers and/or any stamp message board (if one exists). I do know the great majority of regular folks' stamp collections, meaning folks who weren't knowledgeable philatelists, aren't usually the big ones. Disney stuff lest it's early era are generally mass productions. Disney dollars of vintage can go for some decent money, e.g., but condition, age, and denominational rarity are the factors. That's gonna be akin to Disney stamps, but perhaps you could be lucky in that ones for the Israeli market are rarer than the Yank versions(?) Might not wanna touch them til you are sure what they're worth (stamps = cards = coins = comics = etc...condition is big).
If I were you, I would also include "foreign" or country by country terms in your queries. Israeli stamps, e.g. Generally, the country you're currently in has experts in that country's collectibles (coins and stamps in partic).
However, if most of your stuff is from the 1980s and 1990s, they probably fall into that Disney dollar kind of range. Probably won't be worth a lot in the end, but even verification of what you have simply to see what your uncle was into would be rewarding enough afaic.
If you see any weird coin-stamp things (probably not, but just in case), there was a thing called the encased postage stamp in the Civil War period. They were created because coins were being hoarded due to the war. They used a brass case and a 1861 stamp of various denoms and companies advertised on the backs of some. Those are worth money, but I'm more familiar with those simply because they're an adjunct to coins. If you do see anything like that just on a lark, be careful with it.

Thanks NPZ!
There were also 3 commemorative coins in the bunch (pearl harbor/Dwight D. Eisenhower). I looked on Ebay and they sold for about $10 each. There was also some Israeli currency but just a few bills. I would like to cash those in if possible. lol _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |
