I think at this point, Pop pretty much has lost it as a coach. Ever since his wife passed away, he hasn’t had the same passion for the game as he did before. It shows nowadays when before, he never hesitated on yelling and getting at his best players or the 10th guy off the bench, for making a stupid mistake.

He’s probably gonna retire soon and Becky Hammon will take over.

Dude is 72 and the days where the Spurs are threats to be champs are long gone. All the great Spurs retired. Becky Hammon probably got frozed out over those head coaching jobs like the Blazers, but I believe the Spurs job is basically hers if she is patient.

You don’t think Duncan will get it?

Duncan stepped down from coaching before the start of the 2020-2021 season.

It's not a sure bet that she'll get the Spurs coaching gig after Pop retires. Some in the Spurs organization weren't high on her either, and reports seem to indicate that she wasn't ready for the day-to-day responsibilities: https://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/spurs-did-not-endorse-becky-hammon-head-coach/580858

If true, it contradicts everything the media said about the situation. As usual, they are making it into a man vs woman thing and not properly grasping the intricacies of the HC job. Going from assistant to HC is a big leap and comes with its own set of responsibilities. There are so many deserving candidates who simply won't get the consideration, but she has the benefit of the media backing her. I'd argue that Ettore Messina was another ac on the Spurs staff who deserved a lot more consideration for the HC gig.

The rest of what you said is on point. The Spurs won the lottery with Duncan. It will be a while before they are on the map again. Prior to the age of social media, they were pioneers in terms of scouting and developing international talent, but they don't have that edge anymore. Teams have caught up and no good international player will go unnoticed. They'll have to compete with the other 29 teams for the Manu Ginobili's and Tony Parker's. They'll have to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions to make San Antonio the same attractive place it was 7-8 years ago.

Why would a front office trash one of their own coaches to another team?… What is there to gain by doing that?

If I had to guess, Billups was hired to ameliorate the tension between Lillard and the FO. If they lose Lillard, it's over for them unless they get equal value in a trade. They probably weren't sold on Hammon in terms of mending player relationships. Coaching hires these days seem to be less and less about X's and O's and more about appeasing stars and personalities.

Completely agree with the above.

My guess is Pop announces a coach in waiting and it ends up being Becky Hammon.

You have to appease star players like Lillard, if he leaves PDX is in a world of hurt most likely ala the Houston Apocalypse this past season.

Thanks for posting about it so I could track it down and watch it live. I watched the second half. Highly enjoyable. I don’t know if Japan has won anything in basketball but Rui has been looking good.

Much too early to say who will win, but this should definitely be a good, competitive game

Wow yikes

Ankywhoo, as expected the US woke up and started playing (helped by the Spanish coach benching Rubio and cooling him off for reasons unknown)

Clearly I wanted USA to win but it’s a bummer that Spain was knocked out so soon. Probably the Gasols last Olympic hoorah and Scariolo didn’t play them or any bigs and Spain lost. Have never loved their coach. Ah well. It was a good run this past decade, Spain! 🇪🇸

Australia gave up most of that 15pt lead. Good to see USA showing some signs of life.

45-42 Australia (halftime)

I’ve noticed Damon doesn’t play in the final 5 minutes of the 4th quarter in these Olympics. Popovich knows he’s a liability on defense.

Oh snap France knocked out Slovenia. So it’s going to be US versus France for the gold. Whew. That Slovenia/France game was hella good.
