Olympia Dukakis, Oscar-Winning ‘Moonstruck’ Actress, Dies at 89

Quote:
Olympia Dukakis, a character actress best known for her Oscar-winning supporting turn in Norman Jewison’s “Moonstruck” and for her role as the wealthy widow in “Steel Magnolias,” has died. She was 89.

Dukakis’ brother, Apollo Dukakis, announced her death in a Facebook post, writing: “My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis.” Dukakis’ agent, Allison Levy, later confirmed the news to the Associated Press.

I loved her awful. Her life went down the toilet! (If you know, you know).

Seriously, this was a brilliant, brilliant actress. Of course Moonstruck wasn't the only film that she was fantastic in, but I can't think of a more deserving Oscar-winner than her for that role. She was exceptional in it and that's one of those movies that I apply the "magical" tag to. A perfect movie, and I can't imagine anyone else playing that part.

Ti amo, Ms. Dukakis.

Yeah, she was the type who was brilliantly human in everything she did.

I loved her in Moonstruck, and that line about Cher flushing her life down the toilet is one of the most memorable in movie history, at least to me.

I was dragged to Moonstruck by a girl I was dating. Being that I wasn't a movie-goer, I was sort of ambivalent about being in a crowded theater until that scene when Cher went to the bakery to meet Ronny. I suddenly blurted out, "(bleep), that's Nick Coppola!" One of life's surreal moments.
