AD2... The injured Lakers will struggle against the league’s upper class. Those injuries also hit Andre Drummond in his first game. Welcome to L.A.

The Laker three shooting was smoking early. A 12-2 run helped them to a 30-point first quarter where they made 8 threes.

Of course, the offense would die down again as they struggled to put points on the board, going 0-5 from three in the second quarter. They’d trail 57-49 heading into the half.

Drummond made his debut tonight, starting at the center position. He had a good first shift, but only briefly played in the second half with an injury to his right toe. So, the Lakers were without a bigman again.

They fell back by 20 in the third quarter. They were out-talented, but the Laker guard defense was really poor, as well. The team had chances to cut the lead to single digits as we brought Gasol in for the fourth and he was able to block a couple shots and force the Bucks to turn the ball over. Our offense, however, just struggled to produce.

The Bucks are a high scoring team. We can’t keep up with teams that put the ball in the hoop right now. After the Lakers opening flurry of threes, they went 2-23 from three...2 of 23 over the next three quarters. Yikes. The Lakers fell 112-97.

Drummond -- -- We’ll lead off with him as that’s the most interesting thing from this one. He was definitely looking winded after a minute. Then to start the second half, he had issues with his right foot that forced him unable to start and then once he got going, he was out of the game shortly later. Right big toe contusion. “My whole toenail was gone,” he said after Lopez stepped on it in the first half. “What do you do for a toe? I don’t know.” He said he’d ice it and wrap it up since it’s missing a toenail. The Lakers weren’t going to win this game, so watching Drummond was what made this game intriguing. Unfortunately, that was limited to just 14 minutes. Some things to pay attention to: He’s hands on the perimeter. He does a good job using that reach, getting down low and being disruptive. At the same time, in our schemes you don’t want the opposing big man to get behind you. He’s got the skills to make that happen, as well. He had the Giannis assignment from the start. It’s maybe an easier cover for him than other mobile bigs because he just gives Giannis the jumper if he wants it. More to watch: Passing: This is probably his most underrated skill. He can move the ball well in the half court and on outlets. I don’t expect this to be strong until he gets more time. Shot Blocking: He showed some of the skills on a nice effort to challenge a shot and then recover on a second bounce and block a shot at the rim. He also altered a couple shots, as well. Drummond at the line: That freethrow shooting is notoriously bad. He’s improved, however, the past few years but between Drummond/Trezz we’ll leave a lot of points at the line. Rebounding: Of course, we all know he’s elite here. He had just 1 board in his 13 minutes in the first half. I’m looking forward to when AD and AD2 are both on the floor and imposing their size on opponents. Getting more consistent penetration will help him cause problems on the offensive glass. We struggled with that early on. When LeBron returns, that can change. Scoring tonight: Drummond hit a floater off the two-man game and Schröder set him up on another two-man sequence, as well. Vogel liked some of the attention Drummond drew even if he didn’t get the ball and said that played a role in the good shooting in the first quarter. I need more games before I’d say that’s what happened, but Vogel might also have seen some of that in practice. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -8.

Schröder -- -- Holiday was scoring off him early. Schröder was just getting bullied by the guards on the Bucks tonight. Really one of his weakest games defensively in a while. Off ball, on ball, just not good. Offensively, again our pace was really slow most of the night. He’s a quick player, but he’s not one to keep the team playing with any tempo the way guys like LeBron or Rondo did. In the half court, he was able to knock down some threes, a couple of them in that early first quarter when the team was scorching. A lot of midrange action from Schröder and some usual moments with Trezz, which has been a good sign lately. But 18 shots for 17 points, not good. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-18 shooting (3-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -18.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Paging KCP. Your appearance in games would be nice. Struggling from anywhere on the court, he did have a moment in transition off a steal when he was flagrantly fouled, but he only made one FT on that. He’d make a tech FT. And. That. Was. It. 2 points. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a-6..

Kuzma -- -- We’re using him a bit with Schröder is off the floor to help give the offense some penetration and life. You saw those two toggle in and out of the games at times. The three ball tonight was just not there for Kuz. If he was stroking it, we actually might have been in this one, but he was clanking away. We need a little more efficiency from him but aren’t getting that. That will happen when the D can zero in on our role players. Like Schroder, more shots that points. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-17 shooting (1-9 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -17.

Morris -- -- He got the Lakers going with the first three of that first quarter. He’d later knock down a three from the corner on a kickout and another wide open three in transition. Something we don’t talk about much here, but Morris does a really good job on the offensive glass on freethrows. He seems to take pride in it. He had another tip in tonight, but he seems to make something happen in those situations at least once a night. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting (3-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -16.

Harrell -- -- Our leading scorer tonight. Trezz had some of the floater action going as well as getting to the line. He sank all 7 of his FTs tonight. It wasn’t always pretty, but that’s great to see after so many games of 50% shooting recently. I like the comfort with which Schröder and Trezz are starting to play with. We’re trying to run similar things with Kuz and THT and they don’t seem to react to the D as well. They make up their mind a little early and those two-man sequences are an adventure. Vogel seemed to indicate in the future they would run some Gasol/Trezz on the floor. Trezz would play the 5 offensively, Gasol the 4. On D, the roles would be switched. We’ll see how that goes. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 707 from the line) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -9.

Caruso -- -- He jammed late in the game with Giannis on his shoulder trying to block it. A couple of steals and block. When he can do that and score a few buckets like tonight, that’s usually huge for the team. When we need him for guard skills and running the offense, it can become pretty ugly. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-7 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -3.

Horton-Tucker -- :cring: -- He looked very much like a rookie tonight (even though technically he is not). Just too many turnovers on one end and breakdowns on D on the other. The turnovers tonight were a variety. A travel, a clear out with his arm, a hook, dribbling off his foot, throwing a pass away. All of those are fairly different, which isn’t good. Really poor night tonight with 6 turnovers. He missed another three, so that’s 2 of his last 21. All offseason long that’s what he needs to work on. It will open things up for him. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 6 turnovers and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +2.

Gasol -- -- He started the fourth with Drummond out and the Lakers down 14. Right away he helped get a steal and blocked a shot. Unfortunately, we couldn’t score at the other end as we were down 14. He had the Giannis defensive assignment as we used length on him when we could. Actually pretty productive defensively. Offensively, he was set up for a layup. He missed a couple threes and found AC cutting for a score. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and no fouls in 6 minutes. He was a -1.

Matthews -- -- Nice to see him hitting against his former team. He hit a couple of threes off the bench in our early flurry. Then later another to start the second half. Feisty D with 3 steals and he had the size to stay with the Bucks more than some of our others. These are the kind of two-way games we need with more consistency. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-7 shooting from three to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -8.

McKinnie -- -- Garbage time. He was fouled on a three in garbage time and would get another score. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-1 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 1 board and no fouls in 2 minutes. He was a +3.

Cacok -- -- Grabbed a couple of boards, but nothing really to report. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot to go with 2 boards and 1 turnover in 2 minutes. He was a +3.

Antetokounmpo -- -- Some action with the brothers late in the game. Our Antetokounmpo didn’t get a score, but did get scored on by Thanasis. Nice seeing the brothers right after the game with a group hug and teasing each other. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting in 2 minutes. He was a +3.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: We scored 30 in that first quarter...19 in the second. That drop off sucked all the air out of the Lakers game. They scored 67 points the rest of the way. That’s around that 22-point average they seem to consistently produce. Vogel has got to either get them out in transition or work on the sets more to get them some easy ones.

Key Substitution: Brook Lopez stepping on Drummond’s toe and forcing us to start Trezz in the second half. Trezz was surprised and kind of thrown out there and had a couple of mental mistakes before he got on track. I want to see more of that first quarter with AD2, and hope guys can get some better looks with Drummond drawing attention. Right now, I’m going to assume that hot shooting was a fluke, but Vogel wanted to give some credit to Drummond’s presence making that happen.

Key Stats: 2-23 from three after hitting 8 in the first quarter. Kuz went 1-9 from three. “I think we just played a little different style from the first and second halves,” Kuzma said. He mentioned he became more of a shooter and needed to set the table more for others.

Coach’s Challenge: With 10:29 in the second quarter, Vogel challenged a foul on Matthews defending the post against Giannis. Giannis swung his arms hard on the spin and caught Wes above the shoulders. Giannis had one foul, so Vogel was looking for that second early on. Successful challenge (12-5 record for Vogel on those).

Thanks DB. Went about as expected. I think the early run gave a false sense of "wow, we may win..."...until you saw how many 3's they had to hit for that to happen.

Drummond is surprisingly agile for a guy his size. His skills attacking the basket are a bit off, perhaps having AD around can help him improve on that (he's never had a teammate like that).

Did not know his whole toenail came off...eesh.

They will win Friday, got a good feeling about that.

These players can't be effective when not playing on edge since their talent level usually doesn't match their opponents.

Car 54 (KCP), Where Are You!
With perimeter defense not effective and his offense non-existent, great need to "load manage" KCP. It is hard to play 4 on 5, especially if one of the 4 is Gasol who has been mediocre - at best.

Bucks put THT on their knee and spanked him like a kindegarden child repeatedly on offense and defense. They obviously have scouted him and now it is THT's job to have counters to how teams will be guarding him.

Even they only got outrebounded by 2, it seemed like they were getting seriously out rebounded

Even though they only had 1 more TOs, in the third quarter - it seems like we were getting stripped everything we got the ball

Drumond looked good when he played with a lot of energy and probably addrenalum.

KCP pretty much has to be spoon fed his looks on offense. At least he draws a defender I suppose.

Thanks, DB.

I really thought we could win after the 1st quarter.
And obviously Drummond gets injuried within 15 minutes of wearing a Lakers uniform

My biggest takeaway from the game was how the team came out with a lot of energy then it died in the second quarter. They got outworked in the 2Q and 3Q. Anytime you get outworked by the other team you are going to lose.

The droughts have been present since late January, pretty much after the first Bucks matchup. We're a mediocre offensive team who lacks dynamism, explained in part by the high TO rate.

If we can't shoot 3s then put in more plays for Kuz/THT to cut or something, something different

Dumbest thing Vogel did was start Trezz at the 5 when Drummond was unavailable when a well rested Gasol was right there.

Vogel says before the game the bench is Gasol at the 5 and Trezz at the 4. Did he just forget? Seems like he remembered in the 4th quarter and what do you know some life went back into our team and they were more active defensively.

Vogel can really be the dumbest smart person at times.

Ha. I was like no way this shooting keeps up. But I was hopeful that the offense could find a little more flow for a little longer.

It did not.

I think he also mentioned he wasn't going to run them at the 4/5 in this one, though.

But, yeah, going to Trezz there seemed to have us on our heels instead of our toes (yeah, I said that).

Agreed; Gasol should have been engaged off the bench in this one...

Hah! Are you going to be here all week, try the veal?

Would really like to see how the bucks do minus Giannis and Jrue, or Giannis and Middleton. Lakers, minus their big 2, would have won by 10 IMO.
