Yep - Fry's Food is still a big grocery store chain in Arizona.
Fry's Electronics in the Phoenix and Tucson areas are all closed down.
Fry's Food was the original, started by the father of that family. 20 or so years later, 3 of his sons started Fry's Electronics. They used the same logo for the Fry's part of the name, and the same colors in the logo's. |
Oh WOW. I knew about the existence of the grocery chain obviously don’t shop there since I’m in LA. I had no idea the two were related. |
Fry's Food was started in NorCal back in the mid-50's or so. They expanded into SoCal and into Phoenix in the early 60's if I remember right.
They were acquired by some other chain in the 70's - and then that company was eventually bought by Kroger. If I remember correctly, all the Cali stores got their names changed to whatever Kroger chain was biggest in Cali
but the stores in Arizona are still called Fry's Food. They are part of Kroger too, btw - but there was no competing Kroger chain in Arizona at the time, and Fry's Food was well known, so those stores stayed "Fry's" |

I was at Univ of Arizona when Fry's (biggest grocery chain in Tucson) got acquired by Kroger - so that made a lot of news
I then worked in the software biz for 20 years or so, lived in areas with Fry's Electronics - so I knew their story.
