Mostly known for his work with Herbie Hancock, and an innovator in Jazz/Funk, he was also a prolific artist across genres from playing with The Pointer Sisters to appearing on 70's soundtracks including "Dirty Harry". He was part of something near and dear to my heart, Gov't Mule's amazing "The Deepest End" concert - an homage to their late founding member, Allen Woody, by demonstrating the power and importance of the bass, the deep end.

RIP to a bad ass bass player. Hopefully he's jamming with Jaco, Chick and the rest who have left us.

Those Herbie Hancock funk records in the early 70s are amazing. Didn’t realize he was the bassist in them. RIP to a great one.

Had no idea this happened. Sad news. Saw him with the Headhunters at the Roxy in Hwood many years ago. Helluva bassist. I remember being shocked that Herbie was playing funk instead of that kinds spacey Meandishii stuff he’d Helen on for some time. But Jackson’s playing knocked me out.

RIP.
