Former NFL wideout Vincent Jackson found dead at 38

Former Chargers and Buccaneers wide receiver Vincent Jackson was found dead in a Brandon, Florida hotel room on Monday.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Jackson died and that it is investigating the cause of death. Jackson was 38 years old and a release from the Sheriff’s Office said no signs of trauma were found.

Jackson was a 2005 second-round pick by the Chargers and spent seven seasons in San Diego. He made two Pro Bowls and caught 272 passes for 4,754 yards and 37 touchdowns during his time with the team, which included a lengthy contract dispute that kept him out of the first 10 games of the 2010 season.

Jackson signed a five-year deal with the Buccaneers in 2012 and made the Pro Bowl in his first season with his new club. He had 268 catches for 4,326 yards and 20 touchdowns in 63 games for Tampa before finishing the 2016 season on injured reserve. He officially announced his retirement in 2018.

Our condolences go out to Jackson’s family, friends, and loved ones on their loss.

TMZ's article says that he had been staying at the Homewood Suites since January 11, that his family filed a missing persons report on February 11, and that cops spoke to him a day later. They apparently assessed his well-being and canceled the missing persons report. And now 3 days later, he's gone. No signs of foul play or trauma. He leaves behind a wife and kids, so why was he staying in a hotel for so long, away from them, without them knowing where he was? Regardless of the answer to that and regardless of how he died, it's just awful news.

Unfortunately I think of Junior Seau and what a high profile Charger he was and yet still died at a very young age due to the trauma sustained in league.

Vincent Jackson likely died days before he was discovered

A preliminary medical examiner’s report indicates Vincent Jackson likely died days before he was found in his Tampa hotel room, according to WFLA news.

The death of the former NFL receiver was reported Monday.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department said staff members at the hotel entered Jackson’s room on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14. But they assumed he was sleeping after finding him sitting slouched over on the couch and left.

Hotel staff members became concerned Feb. 15 “when they found [him] in the same position.”

Jackson’s family reported him missing on Feb. 10, and, according to the new report, deputies confirmed Jackson’s well being Feb. 11. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said earlier this week deputies canceled the missing persons report after checking on Jackson at the hotel Feb. 12.

So it is unclear whether deputies made contact with Jackson on Feb. 11 or Feb. 12. Either way, it appears Jackson died at least two days — and maybe more — before he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office has yet to determine Jackson’s exact cause of death.

Jackson’s family donated his brain for a study on CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, The New York Times reports.

“Vincent being who he was would have wanted to help as many people as possible,” Allison Gorrell, a spokeswoman for the Jackson family, told The Times. “It’s something his family wanted to do to get answers to some of their questions.”

Jackson was 38.

We can send a man to the moon, land a probe on Mars. We should have the technology to design a helmet to combat CTE.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, though there were no initial signs of trauma. An autopsy is ongoing, though the Hillsborough County Sheriff said Wednesday that Jackson had health problems associated with alcoholism and that his family was concerned that concussions were a factor in his recent behavior, per The New York Times.
