Tough loss last night especially after tying the game late innings. Also, Giants and Padres lost. Blown opportunity.

Giants off tonight, but Padres already lost.

Dodgers lead 4-1 against the Cards.

Mookie with 2 hits in the first! Now 7-1 Dodgers. all our position players reached. Buehler "struck out" on the first out (3 bunt attempts).

Miguel Vargas homered and doubled for Great Lakes on Wednesday, extending his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 23 games.

Vargas played third base, where he’s started 22 times this season, along with two starts at second base and once at first. But the ticket to advancement for the 21-year-old is his bat, one of the best hitting prospects in the Dodgers system. Vargas was one of five Dodgers to be named to some national top-100 prospect list prior to the season, ranked No. 77 in the sport by Baseball Prospectus, who called Vargas “a naturally-gifted hitter.”

Wednesday’s home run was the fourth for Vargas in 26 games this season, to go with nine doubles. He’s hitting .321/.378/.519, leading the High-A Central (nee Midwest League) in hits (34), second in batting average, ninth in slugging percentage and OPS (.897), with a strikeout rate (19.2 percent) much better than the league (26.5 percent).

Quote:
Along with his father, Lazaro Vargas, Miguel defected from Cuba when he was just 16 years old with a future in baseball as his mission. When the scouting crew of the Dodgers caught wind of the La Habana native, they didn’t hesitate to make him an offer, eventually signing him for a $300,000 bonus in September of 2017.

Quote:
Although he’s still diligently working to improve his range at third base on defense, some scouts believe that his strong arm might be his best asset.

As it stands, pundits have Vargas pegged for a 2022 arrival to the big leagues. However, that timetable might depend on what happens with Hoese, as the development of both youngsters could very well play into the team’s future plans at the hot corner.

Yesterday is just another example of what frustrates me with the Dodgers of recent years. The offense is consistently inconsistent and the epitome of a "front-runner".

There are games where they just explode on offense and decimate the opponent and then there are games where no one seems to be able to get a hit when they are needed most.

Despite the Dodgers having an MLB-leading +83 run differential, they only have the fifth best record largely due to the fact that they are 7-13 in games decided by 1 run. The Cubs meanwhile are only 0.5 games behind and have a differential of just +38 runs.

It's great that so many of the Dodger losses have been "within reach", but that also means guys aren't coming up in clutch situations when it's needed. These 1-run games need to be won more consistently to not only boost their confidence for another playoff run, but they can't keep giving games away because it might cost them a chance of even making it to the post season if SF and SD don't slow down.

Yeah, it’s due to our philosophy of playing for the big inning. We get on base, we don’t steal and we swing for the fences no matter the count or situation.

While personnel plays a large part in that, it's also the direction the game has gone in the past ~10 years, not even just the Dodgers. Gone are the days of playing "small ball" - especially in the NL where it would be more common since the Pitcher bats.

So few guys in today's game are looking to go to the plate and just get on base. Everything now is mostly about launch angles and exit velocity. The use of the defensive shift has also played a large part in the all-or-nothing approach since the only way to make sure the defense doesn't put you out is to hit HRs.

Does anyone watch Bauer's youtube vlog? I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago and I've enjoyed some of his "behind the scenes" looks and see more about him as a person. The dude just seems so "real".

Love his YouTube channel. Honestly I think the guy has Aspergers or something. He's a very focused and unique guy. A big plus to the team. I think he has allowed others to break out of their conventional boxes to find new ways to improve.

Sports Illustrated analysis points finger at Dodgers as rule-breakers

A Sports Illustrated cover story Friday says Major League Baseball pitchers using sticky substances on their fingertips to increase spin rate on their pitches is the most rampant cheating the game has seen since the steroid era.

The magazine’s analysis of spin rate data this season points to one team as the likeliest biggest abuser: The Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sports Illustrated studied the spin rates on four-seam fastballs, which is the pitch most helped by sticky stuff since it is the pitch that would be hardest to drastically increase spin rate without some sort of artificial substance.

According to the data, the spin rate on four-seam fastballs around the league has increased by about a half-percent around the league from last season to this season. That's not surprising since an unnamed reliever in the story estimates that 80 to 90 percent of pitchers in the big leagues are using some sort of sticky substance on their fingertips.

But, it’s the Dodgers with the most glaring increase. There are 10 teams whose pitching staff has increased their spin rate on four-seam fastballs by more than 1% - Dodgers, White Sox, Red Sox, Nationals, Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays, Rays, Royals and Mets. Only three teams – Dodgers, White Sox and Red Sox – have increased their spin rate by more than 4 percent year-over-year. The White Sox are at a 4.2% increase while the Red Sox are at 4.01%. The Dodgers are nearly double that at 7.04%.

As the story points out, there’s no evidence the Dodgers are using sticky substances more than any other team, but that increased spin rate is alarming.

Dodgers: Kiké Hernandez Recalls Time Chase Utley Got Hit By Pitch for Yasiel Puig

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Kiké told the ultimate Chase Utley story. Back in July of 2018, the Dodgers had an 8-run lead on the Milwaukee Brewers. Yasiel Puig decided to steal third base in the 8th inning in a blowout, and Chase Utley knew what he had to do.
Tell your pitcher to drill me. Someone’s got to teach him (Puig) that there are ramifications in this game.

“Tell your pitcher to drill me. Someone’s got to teach him (Puig) that there are ramifications in this game.”

According to Kiké, the home plate umpire proceeded to ask Utley if he had lost his mind. The Brewers pitcher was also unwilling to hit Utley who drew a walk on 4 pitches. But Kiké said the Dodgers infielder inched closer to the plate with every pitch.

Hi I’m Chase Utley and I’m so concerned with [unwritten] rules and order that I want you to throw a baseball at me at 90+mph and then we can have 50 guys all come out and yell and puff our chests at each other like we’re going to fight. It’s much more civilized than just realizing some players are going to play hard regardless of the score, in a game where it’s impossible to run out the clock.

The good news is the Dodgers just had a 8 run fifth inning. The bad news is max muncy had to leave the game with ankle pain. Hope it's not too bad.

Graterol sounds like the generic version of the medicine you get prescribed when you enjoy Jerry Garcia music.

Dodgers dug themself a hole getting down 5-1 early. They fought back and now down 1 run in the 7th. They usually don't win these games.

This is definitely a pattern and a problem.

This is hugely defamatory by SI based on ZERO direct evidence. (bleep) them. They are all but calling us huge cheaters without any evidence, and then later, just trying to cover their asses by saying..."oh yeah, we're not saying they cheated".
