Wow. I need to watch some Stafford film.
Goff was not it....and I'm glad he's gone. Dude was a doofus and is only decent with a great OLINE and perfect playcalling.

Stafford is a tough SOB and a lot smarter. I'm betting our delay of game penalties and burning of unnecessary timeouts declines big time next season.

Goff is a slug when it comes to processing the post snap action. I sure as hell wouldn't want him if I was a GM. What would be the point? He's not good enough to elevate a borderline team, and yet he's not awful enough to give you a terrible enough season to draft super early in the first round.

Reaction on Twitter seems to be mixed. Everything ranging from "Goff is awful and Stafford is a massive upgrade and the picks are likely going to be relatively late 1st's" to "Stafford isn't that much better than Goff and they gave up TWO 1st's for him, plus a 3rd?"

Stafford will do really well in this offense if healthy and unless the offensive line completely breaks down. And the picks are not premium 1st's. I think the price was more than fair. For example, Denver and San Francisco could've offered the 9th and 12th picks, and those are significantly better picks than any particular 1st rounder that the Rams could offer. There was no way that the Rams could get him without giving up a second 1st rounder, and they also were able to get off Goff's contract, which was essential because cutting him wasn't an option (which would've left a gargantuan $60+MM dead cap hit).

I do wish that the Rams had a field-stretching, speed merchant of a WR back on the roster like when they had Watkins and especially Cooks, but perhaps they can draft one.

So smart. Return on Goffs play was going in wrong direction. Stafford is better for shorter commitment.

So Stafford did want to be a Ram, the Lions did him a solid, and I can't help but think that the fact that the new Lions GM came from the Rams front office helped quite a bit here.

More details trickling in...

Stafford wanted to play for McVay and be in LA. Lions did him right in the end. There were other offers. Very good ones, too.

Detroit and Rams front offices both knew that this was the trade that made all parties happiest— teams, player, coach.

It was a good trade for both teams. Goff and Stafford needed a fresh start in new environments. Rams paid what was expected for a solid QB.

Yeah, from the moment we got him, he just screamed "slightly below average". Glad we moved on.

That is a steal for Detroit.

I am not even 100% sure Stafford is an upgrade from Goff but obviously the Rams had seen enough of Goff and were ready to make a move.

The impression that I have gotten is that because the Rams believe they will stay competitive enough to be drafting late-first yr/yr, they don't see that pick as more valuable than a proven starter (Ramsey, Stafford). And, they don't see a ton of difference between low-1, high-2.

Stafford is an upgrade, a bonafide above average starter, who despite his experience, might even approach near-elite status as a QB on a better team with a better coach.

Goff is Nowheresville. Just a rather average starter who isn't worth his contract.

Yeah I'm excited to see what McVay can do with a truly talented QB. Goff did fine when they had an elite offensive line and an elite Todd Gurley, but as soon as the conditions weren't ideal, he regressed. As I said, I just worry that the offense is too horizontal without a deep threat at WR, but I'm sure they are aware of that deficiency and will work to address it.

I'm showing this because play-action passes are statistically far more successful plays than non-play-action pass plays...

QB rank in % of passes coming on play action since 2017:

Jared Goff: 5th, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd.
Stafford: 26th, 15th, 33rd, 29th.

Great trade for the Rams, Stafford and McVey will get along well. It’ll open up the playbook and give them more ways to attack defenses. Also props to the Lions for not wasting yet another great player’s career (Sanders & Megatron).

Not a Rams fan, but I’ll be rooting for Stafford. He’s been criminally underrated for most of his career. He’ll finally be part of a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations. I’m pulling for Watson to go to San Francisco for the same reasons.

Maybe Goff will eventually be a solid QB for an NFL team. The problem is the Rams don't have the luxury to find out. The owner built a 5 billion dollar stadium, is spending big money on players like Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, etc.....our defense is one of the best in the NFL that is hobbled by an under performing offense. Not to mention they are playing in LA where unless you are delivering, our attention span will quickly go elsewhere. They have to deal with the pressure of their fellow stadium tenants that just raided their staff for a coach and are serious about emerging from the Rams shadow.

The Rams really need a vertical threat, that would play heavily into Stafford's wheelhouse. Maybe the Rams could ask backchannel if Megatron has any interest in playing. Maybe he's too old or too disinterested, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

My understanding is that the Rams could very well look into the possibility of an extension for Stafford in the immediate, because adding an extra year to his current two-year, $43 million will make the contract a little more team-friendly in the short term as they carry weight.

If someone like Allen Robinson or Kenny Golladay reached the open market and weren't franchise-tagged by their teams, you have to wonder if the Rams would look into that and try to get the likes of Donald and Ramsey to restructure their deals to create enough cap space. Not sure if it can be done, but it seems like something Snead would try to do. I also wonder if Kupp or Woods could be dealt if such a WR signing happened. I think they like Van Jefferson a lot as the third WR, but Kupp and Woods are a little redundant, I think. Both very solid, just a little redundant.

I'm sure the WFT offered #19 overall, but no way did they offer a second 1st, or else they surely would have taken that offer.

Ben Standig
@BenStandig
Washington made the Lions a significant offer for QB
Matthew Stafford, per sources. One person familiar with the situation said the WFT offer included more immediate help than what Lions landed. Detroit went another way. The search for a QB rolls on.

Why the Rams won the Stafford-Goff trade in an absolute landslide

People hear the words “2 first round picks” and act like they are lottery picks. It’s not giving up as much as people think.

It really depends where those two first round picks are projected. The Rams have a pretty good team, so it's fair to project mid to late 20s. I thought the trade was pretty good for the Rams. I thought before the trade that it would take two Ram first rounders, and if anything the spare change (extra third round pick) might have been just a tick expensive. I'm being a bit picky, but the Rams did need to pull the trigger and Detroit knew that too.

It was a good trade for the Rams.

It still has a lot of value since its the NFL, where you have 7 rounds of draft picks. Compared to the NBA where you only have 2 rounds and most of the valuable players are concentrated in the 1st round.

Wonder if Rams would’ve gotten Deshaun Watson with that package. I doubt Houston would want Goff and his contract though.
