Women, be careful out there. It can happen this fast. 34 yr old Eliza Fletcher, kindergarten teacher and mother of 2, was jogging at 4:30am when she was forced into a black SUV. There are surveillance photos:

$50,000 reward offered for finding woman reportedly kidnapped while jogging in UofM area

Investigators said Eliza Fletcher was reportedly forced into an SUV about 4:30 a.m. Friday after a brief struggle in the area of Central Ave. and Zach Curlin.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of a Midtown woman kidnapped today while jogging has posted a $50,000 extra award with CrimeStoppers for information that helps authorities arrest those responsible.

Memphis Police are searching for 34-year-old Eliza Fletcher, who they said was reportedly kidnapped early Friday morning while out for a jog near the University of Memphis.

The University of Memphis Police called MPD to assist about 7 a.m. Friday after receiving a missing person report for Fletcher, known as Liza, a Memphis mother and junior kindergarten teacher at Saint Mary's Episcopal School..

According to Memphis Police, Fletcher had been jogging in the area of Central and Zach Curlin about 4:30 a.m. when an unknown person approached her and forced her into an SUV. U of M police said in a safety alert to students and staff a man had approached her in the middle of Central Ave. and forced her into the vehicle after a brief struggle.

MPD said the suspect was in a mid-sized dark color SUV headed westbound on Central. They have issued a City Watch Alert for Fletcher.

The UofM police said Fletcher’s cell phone and water bottle were found in front of a home owned by the university in the 3800 block of Central Ave.

MPD was at the scene of Fletcher's home Friday evening as the investigation continues into what happened to her.

Fletcher is 5’6” tall and 137 pounds with light brown/blonde hair and green eyes. Her hair was in a bun and she was wearing a pink jogging top and purple running shorts.

Her family posted the bond money this afternoon and issued a statement:

“We look forward to Eliza’s safe return and hope that this award will help police capture those who committed this crime.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 immediately. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH or the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND. The University of Memphis Police can be reached at 901-678-4357 (HELP).

Buddy Chapman, CrimeStoppers executive director, said the award will go to the anyone who provides information that helps police make an arrest.

Yet another story where an attractive, young, blonde, white woman disappears and the media goes on high alert, unlike when the same happens to others who don’t match that favored demographic.

Wow, this might not be random. This kindergarten teacher is a billionaire heiress:

Billionaire heiress

Fletcher is the granddaughter of Joseph Orgill III, who owned the hardware company Orgill Inc.

He died on March 12, 2018 after a brief illness, his obituary said.

The company does $3 billion in annual sales, according to its website.

The company said they are the "world's largest independent hardlines distributor" and supply 11,000 retail stores in the United States.

I’m thinking they can afford to put up more than a $50k reward?

Agreed - but this may actually be a kidnap for hire or ransom - which almost never happens in the US anymore - instead of a random abduction by a predator.

If was actually a planned kidnapping, it wasn't very well planned.

Cops in STANDOFF at apartment complex in search for missing Memphis heiress after suspect is apprehended when his SUV was involved in crash with ATF vehicle - as mother-of-two's emotional husband and family appeal for public's help

• A man has been detained by police in Tennessee in the search for missing mother and billionaire heiress Eliza Fletcher

• The GMC Terrain that was being sought in relation to the kidnapping has also been located

• Shortly after the car was discovered, Memphis cops and the FBI became engaged in a standoff related to the search for Fletcher at a nearby apartment complex

• The SUV being sought in relation to the case was found after getting involved in a car wreck with an Alcohol Tobacco Firearms vehicle close to the complex.

It's high time that young, attractive women of other demographics get equal media coverage when they disappear.

The point is, the media should stop sensationalizing the disappearances of women, regardless of age, appearance or demographic.

When Gabby Petito disappeared in Utah, there were other people (male and female) missing in the same area.

Why'd they tow a car from the victim's house? Do they think the hubby is involved?

OAN - I've spent a little time in Memphis over the years - it's the perfect place to hire yahoos to screw up a criminal enterprise.

Cleotha Abston charged in Eliza Fletcher abduction in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have arrested a suspect in the kidnapping case of missing Memphis teacher Eliza Fletcher.

Cleotha Abston, 38, has been charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence, Memphis Police announced early Sunday.

According to records, Abston refused to provide investigators with information regarding Fletcher’s location. Records also state that the abduction, which was caught on camera, was violent in nature and may have resulted in serious bodily injury.

————-

Shelby County court records show Abston pleaded guilty to an especially aggravated kidnapping charge in 2000.

He was sentenced to 24 years in that case and released in November 2020, the Tennessee Department of Corrections said.

Well, my first thought was that if it actually was a kidnapping for ransom, it would likely be some kind of "inside" job. It's not like company she is an heiress to is a household name or her family is well known. The odds of random people being aware of who this teacher from Memphis are pretty low.

Kidnapping suspect Cleotha Abston abducted Memphis attorney at gunpoint decades ago

Cleotha Abston, arrested in kidnapping of Eliza Fletcher, decades ago abducted prominent Memphis attorney Kemper Durand

Memphis police confirmed to Fox News on Sunday that Abston had been previously charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping for the crime involving prominent Memphis attorney Kemper Durand in May 2000. Abston was 16 at the time, according to the police department.

According to police reports cited in the May 31, 2000, edition of "The Commercial Appeal," Abston forced Durand into the trunk of Durand’s car at gunpoint near Beale Street, "where he spent the next two hours." Durand was able to yell for help after being brought to an ATM machine.

A tribute to Durand by the Lewis Thomason Law Firm referenced the ordeal and highlighted how he petitioned for a lesser sentence for the 12-year-old accomplice who Abston had picked up along the way.

Quote:
"I don't think this was a random kidnapping," TJ Ward, a private investigator, told "Fox & Friends Weekend" of Fletcher's abduction. "I think this was probably planned. And to see what she knew about this or any evidence that might be in the House that they may have obtained in order to get them. Three law enforcement agencies working on this and your cooperation is great. Well, they worked very quickly and got this done."

Ward commended how quickly police have worked this case, adding that the last position of cell phone pings and details from the suspect's vehicle and computers could provide crucial details for investigators.

Man arrested in connection to the Eliza Fletcher case may be a serial kidnapper

According to a Memphis Flyer article from 2001, Cleotha Abston kidnapped Memphis attorney Kemper Durand by gunpoint in May 2000. Abston and another unidentified man were juveniles during the time, and walked up to Durand on Beale Street.

They took his wallet and forced him into the trunk by gunpoint, proceeding to drive around and pick up additional friends around Memphis. Eventually, they took Durand to a Mapco Station to withdraw money from an ATM, where he was able to alert a Memphis Housing Authority officer to his kidnapping.

Abston and the others ran, with Abston later arrested and charged to 20 years in prison for the offense. Notably, the article mentions that Abston already had a long juvenile record including theft and aggravated assault (Memphis Flyer).

Quote:
Memphis Flyer article:

Sixteen months after he was kidnapped at gunpoint and thrown into the trunk of his car, attorney Kemper Durand watched with some regret last week as two juveniles involved in the case were given prison sentences.

Durand was walking to his car around 2 a.m. on May 25, 2000, after attending a party on Beale Street when a lone gunman walked up behind him, took his wallet, and forced him into the trunk.

The abductor, Cleotha Abston, drove around and picked up friends then, after about two hours, escorted Durand into a Mapco station to withdraw money from an ATM. A uniformed Memphis Housing Authority officer entered, Durand yelled that he had been kidnapped, and the kidnappers ran away.

On Monday, Abston pled guilty just before he was scheduled to go to trial and was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole. He had earlier turned down an offer of 15 years on the same charge but, according to Durand, told the court he did not want to sign his name giving himself the time. Abston has a long juvenile record of theft and aggravated assault.

It was the sentencing of the second defendant that gave Durand pause. Marquette Cobbins was 17 years old at the time of the incident. He was one of the friends picked up by Abston after he kidnapped Durand. His prior court record consisted of a truancy violation and a disorderly conduct charge.

He was literally sitting on the porch when Abston came by, says Durand. Any kid who could grow up where he did and have only two miniscule run-ins I figure is probably pretty decent material.

Durand wrote a letter to District Attorney Bill Gibbons urging probation for Cobbins if he would submit to conditions including supervision by a private probation service, high school graduation, repaying Durand $195 for the money in his wallet and towing charges for his car, and undergoing a mentoring program.

The proposal was turned down and Cobbins pled guilty to aiding a kidnapping. He was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years and will be eligible for parole in 18 months.

Durand says he feels bad about that and is also dismayed at the pace of justice.

Yup, it could be random, since the dude who was arrested served a 20 year sentence for a previous kidnapping charge.

But then, it also could have been planned. He could have been hired by someone close to her (the husband?) to kidnap her.

Eliza Fletcher: new details revealed

- Police records indicate the abduction was violent and caught on camera.

- Police said a man was riding his bike down Central Avenue at 6:45 a.m. when he found Fletcher’s cell phone and a pair of Champion brand slides.

- Police said surveillance footage showed a man violently and quickly approach Fletcher before forcing her into the passenger side of a GMC Terrain with passenger-side tail light damage.

- According to police records, the vehicle sat in the parking lot for 4 minutes before driving away. Records also state the GMC Terrain in question was seen 24 minutes before the abduction in surveillance footage.

- The TBI performed a DNA tests on the slides and found that they belonged to Cleotha Abston after his information matched that in the CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) database.

- Investigators managed to recover the surveillance footage showing Abston wearing the same slides days prior to the abduction.

- In addition, investigators were able to find Abston’s cell phone number and were able to determine his phone was in the vicinity of the abduction, approximately the same time it happened.

- When authorities arrived at Abston’s last known address, they found the GMC Terrain in question, with passenger-side tail light damage backed into a parking space.

- When Abston saw authorities, he was standing in a doorway and immediately tried to run, but he was eventually captured by the US Marshals.

- Investigators also interviewed a woman who said after the abduction, Abston was behaving in an odd manner. The witness advised investigators Abston was in a strange mood and vigourously cleaning the interior of his car with carpet cleaner as well as washing his clothes in the house’s sink.

- After his arrest, Abston refused to provide Fletcher’s location.

- According to police records, “As the abduction was violent with, as captured on video, the suspect waiting for, then rushing toward the victim, then forcing the victim into the vehicle, where she was confined and removed and continues to be missing, it is believed and supported by the facts and physical evidence that she suffered serious injury. Further, it is probable and apparent from witness statements that these injuries left evidence, e.g. blood, in the vehicle that the Defendant cleaned.”

I think so. I had to google it and that's what I got. Those rubber sandals.

I hope she is found alive and well.

Praying for her.

If it was supposed to be a kidnap for hire/murder, whoever hired this dude went cheap, which is never a good idea.

If it was a kidnap for money - those almost never work in the US anymore because of the difficulty collecting the money.

If it was an abduction by a predator/trafficking, the abductor was just stupid - surveillance cameras are everywhere around college campuses simply because of the potential for young women to be abducted.

My guess is that the husband is undergoing a law enforcement colonoscopy right now.

Yep - mostly because it's unreliable. Law enforcement has been torturing people since the beginning - almost 30% of those exonerated by DNA through The Innocence Project "confessed" to the crime, generally under duress.

I think the fact that he was wearing slides is a good clue that it was just a random act.

I can't see someone planning/preparing for a kidnapping and carrying it out / executing it in slides.

I think this dude was probably going to the gym, or 7-11 and just happened to see her. His kidnapping instincts kicked in.

That would be the only explanation for being in slides.

Perhaps. I think the dude had scoped out her route and was laying in wait - they reference having his car on other surveillence tapes before the kidnapping. As for wearing slides - that's what happens when yo go cheap.

Lorenzen Wright's ex-wife is in prison now because she wouldn't hire a real pro to kill him. Ditto the former Panthers WR, and countless others. Law enforcement's #1 tool in solving crime is stupidity of the perpetrator, even in murder-for-hire.

I think this dude was probably going to the gym, or 7-11 and just happened to see her. His kidnapping instincts kicked in.

That would be the only explanation for being in slides.

I've seen damn near all of the Forensic Files series and all the HBO Autopsy series so I remember a lot of cases that are similar to current ones. I remember one about a rapist who worked for the county and would go and watch for women in a wooded path on his lunchbreak in his company truck. He always had plastic cuffs in the brim of his cap just waiting for the right circumstance and it came one day with a woman jogging. It was completely random and circumstantial, but iirc, the husband was a sus until they figured it out. He killed the woman as well.

Iirc, his former roommate from over a decade back had one of the plastic cuffs this dude kept from his former job as a security guard or cop. They got to him once they had the name of the possible perp. Because that ex-roomie was a packrat, they got the critical piece of evidence in the case and were able to match the scrapemarks on a little metal tab that goes into every plastic cuff. They matched the ends w/ the end of the one he left w/ the victim. Don't recall how they pinned him, but iirc, the rapist/killer had a prior abduction that was foiled and the woman reported a green truck (which he had), etc. So this perp's MO was already on the cops' radar until they could find out who he was.

There have been numerous cases like that in the far wilderness, too. Creep sees a woman alone and knows he can destroy her w/o witnesses, etc. I know women fancy their independence and all that, but if they decide to go on a wilderness trip, they need to pack. If the sus doesn't get the drop on them first, of course. Which usually is the case. There was another case about a killer/rapist who lured a mother and her daughters on a sight seeing boat ride in FL and he bound them, raped one of the daughters, and threw them all into the ocean for them to drown. These scums are out there waiting for the one right opportunity. So it's def plausible re: flip flops. BTW, the Mansonites didn't kill everyone in the house because they knew Abigail Folgers was in there. They had no idea who she was.

This is one of those right circumstance abductions. This was a sad story because the father's wife committed suicide and the father in the clip himself was beaten to death by home invaders in the recent past. Cursed family.

You kinda confirmed my theory though. I definitely think it's a crime of opportunity.

I'm saying it wasn't a planned kidnapping for ransom type where he went out that night with the intent to kidnap this specific woman. If it was planned, I'd think he wouldn't be in sandals.

I think he was just out that night for some other reason and saw her and decided to kidnap her. The flip flops to me means he was on his way to doing something else (in flip flops) when he saw her and decided to kidnap her.

This case is interesting, too, btw. Woman killed by creep below her apt. Creep worked in a hospital. That's common for these people, law enforcement or hospitals.

Hope they find her, but sadly, the one detail that makes things look pretty bad is that the suspect was cleaning out the back of his car and his clothes when he got back. Horrible story.

Plus he seems poor (works for a cleaning crew). This is not good news for her either.

Unless he has help, where would he keep her? Storage unit? Probably doesn’t have the money. A 2nd dwelling? Doubt it.

Unless he knows of some abandoned place, I don’t know where he can keep her hidden and alive right now.

ON SCENE: The MPD Command Center has moved here near Marjorie & Person.

This is VERY close to where a dumpster was towed from outside #CleoAbston’s brother’s apartment yesterday morning.

We’re working to learn if this is connected to the #ElizaFletcher abduction
