I'm getting old, because this is the only one of the last three I have ever heard before.

Right there, with you: I looked up C M B's word (grindset), as I didn't know it.

You've never heard of celeron? I hope to one day achieve such wealth. That's like having never heard of 87 octane gas.

87 is all I use for all of my cars.

255) corps and colonel

I lump both together because they're used in concert in military parlance, but you also got core and kernel, words that are not only phonetically spelled, but corps and colonel aren't even close to it. So you got the two words w/ spellings that make sense and two w/ spellings that require that you trust the person using them isn't making their spellings up. Further, corpse has an extra E (I guess the Corps don't get theirs), but otherwise sounds the way it looks. Colonial has the same beginning, but is pronounced phonetically. If we replace E for O and R for L, then it's Ramar Edem, which subsequently makes DOOM ALARM "DEEM ARARM".

254) abutment or buttress

253) I've mentioned this before, but many construction words are annoying. Sill and jamb, which people haven't spelled properly since the dawn of either. Window seal and door jam. Similarly, I remember watching a police chase during lunch at work and a doofus noted that the driver was driving on shot out tires: "He's rolling on his REAMS..." I thought, "Oh, you idiot..." (didn't like said person for starters). Hearing window seal makes you wince, but you know that even if you go there and correct, they'll never believe you anyway. It's similar to explaining scapegoat to a person who thinks it's an actual goat. Norm Abram tried to help these people, but didn't have the precision to explain that the rabbit in a dado joint is spelled rabbet. His name itself was pronounced Naahm, but spelled Norm. I don't like the words lintel and joist, either. Never been a fan. Stan inspecting the lumber in Carmella's spec house: "Then you know the code calls fer Doug fir grade, stand fer all floor joists, ceiling joists, lintels, and rafters." Truss and buttress vex me, too. Sightseers enjoy flying buttresses, but they're silly, cmon. Maybe the Notre Dame fire was arson by a person of similar nobly esthetic taste and profound intellect.

The ironing of it being called social media is already rich. It's about the most anti-social sh there is. Teens great at social media have to get training on how to speak to people in reality and w/ eye contact. First time I heard about the net/web was in late 1990 by the one teacher I had who actually knew it existed and used it. That was before the first web browser for the public was released. He evidently knew how to get info off of whatever form it was in, but some of the things that he told us all to spark our amazement and imagination about the future to come are not only amusing now, but were already amusing as soon as chats and porn began flourishing on the World Wide Web. We had comps in the schools I went to starting in 84/85, but only 2 Apple IIs at that point. By late 80s, they had a comp class where we'd play Oregon Trail, etc. They were trying to acclimate us little shiz to computers as a thing back then, but 90/91 was around the time where we first started hearing about how it was gonna be vital for us to know how to use the internet(s). We would have all of our information within fingers' reach and there would be computers running every part of our lives. That's still not the case for society at large and it took at least til 2007 before tech was running our collective IQs and attention spans into the ground.

252.) "a love letter to"

I see this in too many trite film reviews written by someone who definitely collects funko pops and needs to project depth onto some infantile cartoon adaptation.

"Spiderman no way home is a love letter to the spiderman character!"

Eww. Haven't noticed that, but they don't know the alternate meaning of love letter. Frank in Blue Velvet: "I'll send you a love letter, FAAAH'er! Do you know what a love letter is?!... It's a bullet from a faah'in gun, FAAH'er!"

250.) puto (bread) . . . only because in (Mexican) Spanish puto means female dog and/or gay male prostitute, with puto being a slang term

puto bread really means Filipino steamed cake

247) shiitake - good mushroom, unfortunate name

246) Crimini vs portobello is a piece of foolishness. They're the same shroom in different stages of development and/or color variants. Portos have exposed gills and crimini may or may not refer to the white less-mature form, but it does apply to the brown less-mature form. And portobello itself can be acceptably spelled various ways, notably w/ with an A ending.

244.) woke

didn't like it before it was co-opted, by right-wing nutjobs, because of the grammatically incorrect way it was used, and I don't like it, now, that right-wing nutjobs (and their grannies) throw it around, in their culture wars

243) haboob and lahar -- dust storm in Middle East and volcanic ash/mud/debris mixed with water flow.

Two loanwords, but funny-weird/funny-funny. And lahar isn't generally known outside of places like Mt. Rainier. They got lahar warning detectors, but when Rainier erupts, the death toll will be yuge. It has a lot more glacial ice and people in its shadow than St. Helens. Now you know.

242.) tiramisu

nasty cake that people swear by. Got used to eating it at Italian restaurants because people insisted it was good. Went to a cafe in Rome and saw that they had Tiramisu. "Maybe it's good here." No. At most places in the US it will at least dress itself up as an appetizing slice of tuxedo cake. At the cafe I was given a mug full of mushy, lukewarm scum.
