Somebody made a comment in the FA thread the contract he got with Chicago would have cost the Lakers $40-50M in luxury tax. Not sure if true but if it is that is outrageous. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

What a great story. Started undrafted, worked his way up the GLeague and the Lakers rotation. Now he's making 40m. Awesome story and proud of AC.
Should be interesting to see if his life is much more different without LBJ/AD. |

Here's my quick analysis, please anyone step in to correct any mistakes.
Lebron : 41
Davis : 35
Westbrook : 44
Gasol : 2.7
McKinnie : 1.9
Ariza : 1.7
Ellington : 1.7
Howard : 1.7
Bazemore : 1.7
Deng : 5
Vet-min : 1.7
That's 10 spots and comes to 137 which is roughly the luxury tax threshold. So the 3-4 remaining spots will all incur luxury tax which could be filled by some combination of:
DS, THT, mmle, Caruso, vet-mins
Just carrying vet-min cap-holds for these final 3-4 spots will cost at least $5 million. So at the minimum the Lakers will be $5 million over lux tax line.
And if we assume: DS : 17, THT: 6, mmle : 6, the Lakers could be $30 million over the lux cap level without factoring in Caruso.
Since the luxury tax level increases every extra $5 million over lux threshold, Caruso's *incremental* luxury cost impact varies depending on where the Lakers view him in priority compared to : DS, THT, mmle.
If Caruso is viewed as the highest priority his lux tax impact = 1.75 x 5 + 2.5 x 3.3 = $16 million
If Caruso is viewed as the second lowest priority his lux tax impact = $30 million
See: NBA Luxury tax tiers
So, that "someone" while not being too far off, was representing worst-case.
(And BTW, it's only fair that we use the same argument for DS right? If DS is retained at $17 million, he can be viewed as a lux tax penalty of ... wait for it ... $55 million)

By "last year" you mean when it was time for DS' extension right? i.e. the $84 million offer? It would have been a bit (around 10%) worse as long as everything else played out the same viz. the Westbrook deal. |

I love how so many trying to undercut what Caruso brings to the table to justify the FO's crappy moves
all memes aside, Caruso is not some replaceable overhyped player like Delladova. He is a rare breed role player that any smart contender dreams of having in their rotation. He is a flat out elite combo guard defender which in itself is a huge value considering how many elite guards you have to try to slow down to have any success in this league. But then while most defensive specialist guards are a liability on offense Caruso actually excels at off ball movement and spot up shooting (40% from 3 last season). And then he just consistently brigs all the intangibles as a x-factor player who somehow always elevates the lineups he is in as seen with his on court/off court metrics.
This is the type of player that smart teams try to figure out how to obtain, not let walk away for a measly 9M/year. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

Caruso did so many things that didn’t show up in the box score… and people who know basketball recognized that.
Lakers are still going to win the title next year… but I wished they kept him.
Good for him though. Went from the D League to a mega millionaire. Talk about well deserved. |

Really happy for him, and a joy to see Zo and Caruso united again. They were part of that GOAT summer league squad in 07: https://www.nba.com/resources/static/team/v2/lakers/files/Lakers-17-Summer-League-Guide.pdf
Probably the most unbeatable team in the SL to this day. Look at all the dudes on that roster that got the bag.
Crazy to think that he'd still be in the g-league or playing overseas if the Lakers didn't give him that summer league invite in 07. There are gems out there, and it takes time to find them. Lakers FO is clearly the best in the league at conjuring talent from nothing. |

Rob is smarter as far as basketball than all of us combined. to say he didn't understand what alex brought to the team is absurd.
this is about money and the luxury tax... which could be like $40M JUST for adding alex over the cap. look at the warriors. they are literally paying like $140,000,000 IN LUXURY TAXES. not salary... TAXES!
but this is LBJ and AD's team. i bet they were presented with these 2 options... would you like buddy hield, alex, THT and the 22nd pick... OR Westbrook and THT. which is it? well, we know the answer.
but we ain't done. something has to be brewing between dennis and the alex TPE. |

I'm beginning to think Rob knows what he's doing. He's made some good moves and still has DS in his pocket. He's certainly gotten my attention. I think we're an honest contender. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Should be interesting to see if his life is much more different without LBJ/AD. | Lonzo likes to play fast and feed open guys who run with him for immediate shots. I think he’ll do well in that environment. |

I remember last time they had a TPE and fans kept talking about how valuable it was and what you could do with it. In the end, if I’m not mistaken, it was never used. It’s only as valuable as the haul it brings you. Imo, until it’s used, it’s not even worth talking about. In other words, I’ll believe it when I see it. |

what does this mean? Knowing the cap is different than the game and knowing who will/wont sign. Rob has made us more talented each year. |

^Rob is a terribull asset manager tho. Some of you guys just refuse to see it.
Quote: | Assists per 36 leaders in the preseason (min 40 minutes): Trae Young - 13.7 Luka Doncic - 13.4 Kyle Lowry - 13.3 Chris Paul - 12.8 D'Angelo Russell - 11.4 Ricky Rubio - 10.7 Alex Caruso - 10.1 Gabe Vincent - 10.0 LaMelo Ball - 9.7 James Harden - 9.6
|
We were rumored to be “aggressive” in retaining AC at 7m per and nothing more.
So that additional 1.6m (7m LA offer vs 8.6m Bulls deal), which ended up going to one of our 8 vet min deal guys anyways, would have cost us an additional 5.2m taxes, which is what we’re paying for one of our vet min guys anyways.
Quote: | The Lakers, they looked at Caruso and said, “We can go to 7 million a year. But above that, it gets too cost-prohibitive.”

Well vasashi, someone in the organization is a terrible asset manager. It could very well be Pelinka, I just hesitate to say it is until (if/when) he gets a chance without LeGM.
Pelinka just seems to be way too detail oriented to me personally that he would just waste assets. Magic and Lebron (both players first) are ready to cut, trade, overpay just to get the player they want… |

^Cant really refute you SD, cause ownership seems to have capped Rob’s spending ability so I can’t entirely blame him for losing certain assets, but in terms of creating cap space for 2018/19 free agency, I would think it was Rob and not really Magic with the cap know how in having to set us up in that regard.
But if it really were up to LeGM, you would think Melo would have been here seasons ago and he would have made sure to keep a GOAT on a non-GOAT salary even if he got taxed.
