Not directly Lakers related, but since fiendishoc had previously mentioned the simplified Portland defense as a model for Lakers to emulate, I decided to add this interesting article on how the Phoenix Suns contained James Hardn so well yesterday:
Quote:
"If this sounds familiar, it's because this is the exact strategy the Trail Blazers used to contain Harden in last year's first-round series. They had a tough and disciplined primary defender (Wes Matthews) that could also go at Harden in the post on the other end. They had a conservative defensive scheme that trapped Harden in the mid-range area and focused on creating misses instead of blocking shots or generating steals. They had length to help on the opposite side and a willingness to let other Rockets beat them."

IIRC, game 1 against OKC two years ago it looked like Harden's legs were just gone from playing such heavy minutes in run up to playoffs that year.

Game 1 and game 2 against Portland last year, not sure what happened (Dwight was so mad at him because he was a total no show those games).

Interesting to see what happens this year, because his regular season clutchness totally disappeared in playoffs against Portland last year ( http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2014/04/from-clutch-city-to-clank-city-scary-details-of-rockets-struggles-in-key-moments/ ), and 5 - 20 shooting almost seems like par for the course most games Harden played in playoffs last 2 years.

At least to me, winning MVP and individual scoring title this year are meaningless if he can't finally lead his team beyond first round of playoffs this year.

Addition by Subtraction?:

Is the reason Lakers defense looks much better tonight against Clippers because Boozer and Hill are not on the floor?

(Just like at the beginning of season, Boozer and Hill were paired together on defense last few games off the bench when games got away from Lakers after first quarter. When one is on court without the other, the poor defense isn’t quite as bad, but seems like that pairing (both Boozer and Hill on floor together on defense) has been at core of Lakers defensive woes since the very start of season. Boozer Kelly Davis seemed pretty good, as did Hill and Davis, and Lin and Kelly both look like great off ball team defenders if Lakers actually had lock down wing defender at the initial point of attack).

Other question I have is whether Lakers defense recently has been intentionally conceding threes (to pack the paint because they don’t have big center), or whether they were just missing rotations. e. g. IIRC Pelicans game seems like Pelicans were looking for threes like they knew they would get clean looks then. Forgot if Nets were also specifically looking for alot of threes, too.
