Lakers mulling what to do with Pau

The Los Angeles Lakers have been weighing the benefits of holding on to the perpetually dangling Pau Gasol for the rest of the season to maintain his Bird rights this summer, against trading him before Thursday's trade deadline, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The Lakers have been one of the more active teams in advance of Thursday's deadline as they gauge the market for Gasol and veterans such as Jordan Hill, Chris Kaman and Steve Blake. With their record at 18-35 heading into Wednesday's game against the Houston Rockets, it makes little sense to pay luxury taxes and be in line to pay the more punitive repeater taxes in the future.

However, sources said the Lakers have remained resolute in every trade discussion not to trade Gasol without acquiring an asset in return, and that there is a growing sentiment within the organization that it could be more valuable to hold on to Gasol and his Bird rights as he becomes a free agent and the organization has substantial room under the salary cap for the first time in years.

The Lakers have stayed in contact with the two teams who had earlier showed interest in the four-time All-Star -- the Phoenix Suns and the Cleveland Cavaliers -- but sources said none of those discussions has made substantial progress.

Trade Deadline: Latest buzz around NBA
2014 NBA TRADE DEADLINE
BY SI.COM STAFF

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo (left) continues to be the subject of trade rumors. (Steve Babineau/NBAE via Getty Images)
Here is the latest buzz around the NBA with two days remaining before Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline:

More Buzz: Monday, Feb. 17 | Feb. 16 | Feb. 15 | Feb. 14 | Feb. 13

Update, 9:30 p.m. Tuesday
• Marc Stein, ESPN.com: Most intriguing Sacramento-based deadline story is increasingly loud buzz out there that Isaiah Thomas is available in midst of career year. … Kings in tough spot [with Thomas] headed to restricted free agency. Of course … anyone trading for his big stat line/low salary faces same issues.

• Alex Kennedy Basketball Insiders: Rival executives believe the Lakers and Suns will resume trade talks, with Pau Gasol ultimately being traded to Phoenix. The executives believe Pau Gasol is the best player Phoenix can realistically get for Emeka Okafor’s insured, expiring contract.

Pau Gasol: Report: Lakers consider keeping Pau Gasol

Pau Gasol - F/C - LAK - Feb. 19 - 9:32 am et
The Lakers are reportedly weighing the merits of keeping Pau Gasol for the rest of the season to maintain his Bird rights.
The alternative is dealing him before Thursday's trade deadline, but they're determined to acquire an "asset" rather than just a straight salary dump. Thus far teams like the Bobcats, Suns and Cavaliers have resisted including a valuable pick to rent Gasol for a few months before free agency, but the Lakers' convictions will be put to the test in the next 24 hours -- if they hold onto Gasol they may be hard-pressed to get under the luxury tax (currently $7.4 million over). NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers talking Pau Gasol trade with Minnesota Timberwolves

BY JOSH HILL - FEB 19TH, 2014 AT 8:45 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers have seemingly been trying to trade away Pau Gasol for most of his career, as he has come up in trade rumors on an annual basis. The Lakers must get paid by the rumor, as it Gasol’s name comes up so often that you’d think he’d have been traded by now, but the Lakers continue to hold onto him.

You can’t blame Los Angeles for not trying though when it comes to trading Gasol, as the team is offering their big man up to just about anyone. According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com, the Lakers inquired about the Minnesota Timberwolves interest in trading for Gasol so he can play with Ricky Rubio.

The Lakers did inquire about Minnesota’s interest in teaming Gasol with his Spanish countryman Ricky Rubio recently, according to a source, but those talks did not progress.

if we learned something from Howard is to trade and get something in return.

Lakers have messed up with Pau since the CP3 trade and no reason to keep him now and worry about S&T

just trade him already and get a 1st pick.

thats a good asset to have in a good draft with an expiring of Nash

NBA Trade Rumors 2014: Phoenix Suns Trade Front Quiet?
February 19, 2014 08:21 AM EST
NBA trade rumors for 2014 have included the Phoenix Suns quite a bit. It's no secret that Pau Gasol trade rumors have been linked to the Suns and that the team has been trying hard to pry him away from the LA Lakers at an inexpensive price. It's even possible that those negotiations are still ongoing. An updated report, though, states that the team will likely end up being conservative as the Feb. 20 deadline approaches.

The exact word used by a local reporter was "prudent" when predicting how the team will approach midseason transactions. It has been suggested that recent talks have been exaggerated and that suggestions of the team acquiring Brandon Bass, Zach Randolph, or Gasol "will sink." This might cool the fears of some fans that the team would make a move out of desperation instead of just waiting for a healthy Eric Bledsoe to return from injury in the long-term.

Kevin Love Lakers 2014? Pau Gasol, first round pick in play as Los Angeles tries to land superstar before NBA trade deadline? [VIDEO]
By Raimundo Ortiz | Feb 19, 2014 11:04 AM EST

Minnesota Timberwolves PF Kevin Love. (Photo : Reuters)
The Los Angeles Lakers either haven't given up on this season despite having the league's fourth-worst record, or they're in a rush to build a contender while Kobe Bryant is still in the purple and gold.

According to CBSSports, the Lakers are frantically trying to assemble a trade package for the Minnesota Timberwolves that would net them one of the league's premier power forwards, Kevin Love.

Any deal for Love coming from Los Angeles is said to include power forward/center Pau Gasol, who will earn $19.3 million this season, but whose deal comes off the books after this year. Insiders believe the best shot at moving Gasol, who is currently injured but is expected back soon, is to a team that believes he can factor into their mid-term plans on a medium-sized contract.

Gasol to the Timberwolves makes a lot of sense, as Nikola Pekovic can do a lot of the banging down low while Gasol and point guard Ricky Rubio try to re-create some Spanish national team magic.

Uncertainty over Gasol's status with Lakers nearing end

EL SEGUNDO The last time the Lakers faced losing a big man to free agency, they did everything to keep him. The organization erected billboards around Los Angeles, including one on the side of Staples Center.

Pau Gasol might not even get the chance to decide whether to depart Los Angeles. If he plays Wednesday against Houston, he will line up against Dwight Howard who ignored the billboards and pleas of the Lakers franchise and signed with Houston. The 33-year-old center will only be able to wonder if it will be his last game as a Laker.

been like that for a while, Gasol said Tuesday after practicing for the first time in nearly three weeks because of a strained muscle in his groin.

Gasol has appeared in 44 games for the Lakers (18-35), averaging 17 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Before suffering his injury, Gasol was enjoying his best month of the season, but he remains questionable to play Wednesday, which could make teams looking for a difference-maker hesitant to trade.

If no decent pick coming back, just keep him. Lakers brass can always do S & T this summer for probably even better returns because his contract will be much more enticing by then.

Pau Gasol should be traded to the Phoenix Suns

Published 4 hours ago by Sipho Mangoye, read by 56 people. There
It’s undoubtedly one of the worst kept secrets in the NBA that the Los Angeles Lakers have been using Pau Gasol as trade bait for several years now.

The team has failed to ship him out on numerous occasions, from the Chris Paul deal, which was vetoed by then Commissioner David Stern (you’re welcome Clippers’ fans), to the Dwight Howard saga, which seemed to go on forever.

Yet Pau is still donning a purple and gold uniform, but for how long?

With Dwight Howard bolting for greener pastures, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash adding to the list of profile spectators at the Staples Centre and Mike D’Antoni struggling to find bodies to fill the roster, it’s safe to say the winning culture of Lakers has been put on hold. That means it’s time to start afresh and build a new dynasty for the NBA’s most storied franchise.

Consequently, it appears more likely that Pau Gasol will be a member of a different franchise come 3pm (ET) on Thursday. And according to multiple reports, Phoenix seems to be the likely destination. The problem is that the Lakers are asking for too much in return.

Preview: Lakers vs. Houston Rockets

By Eric Pincus
February 19, 2014, 7:30 a.m.

The Lakers (18-35) will finally get a crack to play against Dwight Howard at Staples Center on Wednesday night, when the Houston Rockets (36-17) visit for the first time this season.

Houston has surged recently, winning seven in a row to climb to third in the Western Conference.

Both the Lakers and Rockets have struggled with injuries this season, but the Lakers have had it far worse.

Houston is finally healthy while the Lakers are still missing Steve Nash (nerve-root irritation), Kobe Bryant (knee/Achilles), Nick Young (knee) and Xavier Henry (knee).

Pau Gasol (groin) and Jordan Farmar (hamstring) are questionable while Jodie Meeks will make his return from an ankle injury.

Dwight's L.A. return unworthy of hype
February 19, 2014
J.A. ADANDE via ESPN

The latest example of how bad a fit Dwight Howard was with the Los Angeles Lakers comes in the buildup to his return in a visiting uniform. Well, lack of buildup. It feels like a local story, not worthy of intense national scrutiny.

Truth is, it's not a highly anticipated event in Los Angeles, where Lakers fans have already moved on to thoughts of whom they can acquire through the draft and free agency; they're not spending the week lamenting the guy they lost.
Howard's one season with the Lakers wasn't long or relevant enough to build a connection with the fan base. It provided no defining moments that will be in his career highlight reel. He didn't win a postseason game for a franchise that is accustomed to recording double-digit playoff wins annually.
It's also hard to criticize Howard's decision to leave when he's unquestionably better off for it. The Rockets are in third place in the Western Conference while the bottom has fallen out for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant has played only 177 minutes. Steve Nash, 225 minutes. Easiest way to summarize the different directions: The Rockets are on a seven-game winning streak, and the Lakers have lost seven consecutive games at home.

Dwight Howard visits Lakers for first time since spurning them

Dwight Howard will make his first appearance on the Lakers' home floor in a Houston uniform Wednesday night, when the Rockets visit Staples Center.

"I think he's not going to expect a great [reception], I think that's fair to say," said Lakers center/forward Pau Gasol after practice Tuesday.

Howard spent an uncomfortable season in Los Angeles last year, following a summer trade to the Lakers from the Orlando Magic.

After a slow start, the Lakers' finished 45-37 but were swept out of the playoffs by the San Antonio Spurs. Kobe Bryant (Achilles) sat out the postseason, putting the Lakers' at a significant disadvantage against the Spurs.

Howard moved on in July, signing with the Rockets despite the Lakers offering a larger contract to stay.

When Howard visited the Clippers in November, the home crowd booed him consistently throughout the game.

By Justin Page | ESPN.com

Troy Taormina/USA TODAY Sports

Dwight Howard returns to Los Angeles tonight for the first time since leaving for Houston.

Dwight Howard will visit the Lakers for the first time since bolting for the Houston Rockets as a free agent.

Howard became the first player in NBA history to play in three straight All-Star games, each representing a different team (2011-12 Magic, 2012-13 Lakers, 2013-14 Rockets).

February has been kind to Howard so far. He is averaging 25.8 points on 65.7 percent shooting from the field in five games during the month.

Dwight Howard This Season
PPG FG pct
Feb. 25.8 65.7
Jan. 18.8 54.9
Dec. 19.1 59.6
Oct.-Nov. 16.7 56.6
In the first meeting on Nov. 7, Howard missed seven late free throws to allow the Lakers to keep it close before Steve Blake hit a wide-open 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift L.A. to a 99-98 victory. Howard totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds but went just 5-16 from the line.

Howard has been better from the line lately. He’s shooting 70.8 percent (46 for 65) at the line over his last six games. In his previous 47 games this season, he had a 52.2 free throw percentage.

Bitter return? Howard set to play before Lakers faithful

FEBRUARY 19, 2014, AT 10:26 AM ET

(SportsNetwork.com) - Dwight Howard will make his first appearance against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Wednesday night when the Houston Rockets start a western trip at the Staples Center.

Howard played only one season in Hollywood, but it was tainted with in house squabbles with teammates, especially Kobe Bryant, a fired coach in Mike Brown, and massive underachievement.

Howard bolted L.A. for Houston as a free-agent in the offseason. The decision has paid off beautifully for both the Rockets and Howard. Houston is tied for third in the Western Conference and Howard just made his eighth All-Star team over the weekend.

Howard finished with eight points and 11 rebounds Sunday night in New Orleans. James Harden started for the West and chipped in eight points in the loss.

The two Rockets aren't used to losing much lately. Houston has won seven consecutive games, including three straight on the road. The Rockets play five in a row out west with stops against the Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings and Clippers after the matchup with the Lakers.

Hall of Fame guard Gail Goodrich meets with struggling Lakers

By Eric Pincus
February 19, 2014, 7:48 a.m.

Before the Lakers practiced on Tuesday, Hall of Fame guard Gail Goodrich spoke to the team.

"We started our day off here with a talk from UCLA great, Laker legend Gail Goodrich," said Jordan Farmar, also a UCLA product, following practice on Tuesday.

"It was just about enjoying the moment and preparing for life after basketball," said Farmar of Goodrich's message to the team. "Just stay passionate about the things that you enjoy doing, the same way we were passionate to make it to this level in the basketball world."

The Lakers (18-35) have just 29 games left but are a full 13 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Goodrich lamented the team's struggles, noting some of it was a lack of consistency on the floor -- but acknowledged that the Lakers have had a lot of injuries this year.

"Today's game is much faster. It's a full 94-foot game, everybody is running at full speed. Anything that goes awry, increases the chance for injury," said Goodrich. "When I played, the game was much slower."

Kevin Love: Timberwolves 'have a better team' than the Lakers
By Zach Harper | NBA writer
February 19, 2014 1:21 pm ET

Kevin Love says the Wolves have a better team than the Lakers. (USATSI)
Everybody assumes Kevin Love is leaving the Minnesota Timberwolves and on top of that, everybody seems to assume he'll leave them to join the Los Angeles Lakers. That's been the feeling since David Kahn refused to give Love the five-year max extension and gave the power forward an opt-out option after year three of his four-year deal. With Love's free agency in 2015 looming, many pundits and fans are wondering when the Wolves will trade Love instead of risk losing him for nothing in free agency.

As of right now, Love doesn't necessarily see it that way. He tells Steve Marsh in GQ Magazine that the Wolves have a better team and a better foundation than the Lakers. He also says he's faving fun in Minnesota.

Now that he looks like a leading man—and with free agency looming as an option at the end of next season, and the Wolves not exactly killing it on the court—everyone assumes that his next big move is to Los Angeles. He's dating actress Cody Horn, a California girl, and his Beach Boy uncle, Mike, co-wrote “California Girls.” So fess up, Kev: You're gone, right?

“People think it's so far-fetched that I would stay in Minnesota,” he says. “And I'm not (bleep) on the Lakers, but we have the better team, the better foundation. I'm having fun.” Note the present tense.

As Marsh notes at the end of the blurb, noting the present tense is key here. The feeling seems to be that things are fine in Minnesota now but they have to get much better if they want to actually keep Love around. If you look at the foundations of the two teams right now, Love is 100 percent correct on the current state of the two organizations.

Quote of the Day: Kevin Love wonders why you’re so sure he’s bolting for L.A.
Kurt Helin Feb 19, 2014, 12:02 PM EST

“People think it’s so far-fetched that I would stay in Minnesota. And I’m not s—— on the Lakers, but we have the better team, the better foundation. I’m having fun.”

—Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves, speaking to Steve Mash of GQ (in an article in large part about beard trimming).

Love is not wrong. The Timberwolves have a roster right now. It’s a roster that may be a disappointment but has a better foundation for winning than the Lakers right now. If you use the present tense.

That said, very few people around the league believe Love is staying in Minnesota — of course he’s going to say things like this publicly because he doesn’t want to create an awkward situation, but what he says to GQ or anyone else on the record and what his agent or other intermediaries tell the Timberwolves off the record do not necessarily match up. That is how the game is played. Most people around the league still think he winds up in Los Angeles, although in free agency Love would have multiple major suitors.

People think it's so far-fetched that I would stay in Minnesota. And I'm not s------- on the Lakers, but we have the better team, the better foundation. I'm having fun.

-- Kevin Love, to GQ magazine
But in a recent interview, Love said he enjoys playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves and compared his team favorably to the Lakers.

"People think it's so far-fetched that I would stay in Minnesota," Love told GQ. "And I'm not s------- on the Lakers, but we have the better team, the better foundation. I'm having fun."

The Lakers and Dallas Mavericks reportedly are attempting to complete trades this week for Love, who can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2014-15 season if he declines a player option on his contract with Minnesota.

Los Angeles entered Wednesday with an 18-35 record, tied for the worst mark in the Western Conference. But the Lakers could potentially create significant salary-cap space in time for the summer of 2015, as Kobe Bryant is the team's only high-profile player under contract beyond the 2014-15 season.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Pau Gasol participated in shootaround Wednesday but was ruled out for the Los Angeles Lakers' game against the Houston Rockets because of his strained right groin. Chris Kaman will start in his place.

"I think he's OK, I think he's fine," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He wants one more practice."

Gasol is considered probable for the Lakers' game against the Boston Celtics on Friday.

If it was Gasol’s last appearance on the Lakers’ practice court, at least there was a smile on the 13-year veteran’s face as he went through a series of post drills after shootaround with assistant coaches Kurt Rambis and Larry Lewis. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday afternoon and Gasol's name continues to appear in trade speculation.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Kevin Love On His Way To L.A.? Pau Gasol To Bobcats?
By Anthony Riccobono
on February 19 2014 3:16 PM

Kevin Love reportedly wants out of Minnesota. Reuters
The Los Angeles Lakers are in the middle of one of their worst seasons in franchise history. With the trade deadline scheduled for Thursday, the organization is hoping to make a deal that would put them right back in contention next year

According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, L.A. is trying to put together a package that will land them Kevin Love. The power forward is set to be a free agent in 2015, and the perception around the league is that the chances of Love re-signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves are very slim. The 25-year-old is one of the premiere players in the NBA, but he’s languished in a small market, never reaching the playoffs.
