Bobcats ask about Pau Gasol, but trade unlikely
BY RICK BONNELL

FacebookTwitterGoogle PlusRedditE-mailPrint

The Charlotte Bobcats have been in contact with the Los Angeles Lakers concerning veteran big man Pau Gasol, but a source familiar with the discussion downplayed the likelihood Gasol would end up a Bobcat by Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

Gasol makes over $19 million in this, the final season of his current contract. Superstar Kobe Bryant is hurt and the Lakers have fallen out of the Western Conference playoff race, so getting something for Gasol – like a first-round pick – is something the Lakers have explored.

While adding Gasol could give the Bobcats the short-term boost to make the playoffs, giving up a first-round pick would make Gasol more of a long-term investment. That’s where the Bobcats would have pause.

Pau Gasol Trade Rumors: LA Lakers Trade With Charlotte Bobcats Brewing?
February 18, 2014 12:51 PM EST
Pau Gasol trade rumors are back. An LA Lakers trade of Gasol is being sought by the Charlotte Bobcats. The team would like to put him on the front line in the Eastern Conference to help them secure a spot in the 2014 NBA Playoffs. It has led to discussions between the two teams, raising some interesting questions about what the Lakers might be able to get out of this deal.

The reality is that it would be very tough for these two teams to come to terms on something before the NBA deadline of Feb. 20. The Bobcats could certainly send back expiring contracts like what Ben Gordon or Ramon Sessions has, but that would likely not be enough to pry the former All-Star power forward away from Los Angeles. They would likely have to include a young asset, but that might just stall the talks completely.

Pau Gasol Hoping to Avoid Trade at Deadline
Pau Gasol said he did not want to be traded and talked about his experience of being traded from Memphis to LA.

Answers Trade Questions

The NBA's trade deadline is Thursday, Feb. 20.

Possibly for the final time as a Los Angeles Laker, Pau Gasol will be escorted to the stage and presented for all interested parties. A prospective suitor must part with a draft pick or promising young player, or Gasol will remain with the Lakers for the remainder of this season.

"The offer would have to change, I think, a little," Gasol acknowledged he was reading along with everyone else heading into the All-Star break. "If something happens, it'd be a tough moment no matter how much you try to prepare yourself mentally."

Watch: Sochi in Slow Motion
Gasol does not want a trade, and he does not feel slighted by the Lakers.

"I feel wanted," Gasol said. "Otherwise I wouldn't be here."

He may not be the most eligible bachelor, but Gasol still has skill, ability and experience to offer a playoff-level team. Whether that team is willing and able to work out a deal before the deadline remains to be seen.

NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers, Bobcats talking Pau Gasol deal

BY BRYAN ROSE - FEB 18TH, 2014 AT 11:55 AM

It appears the Phoenix Suns aren’t the only team with an interest in acquiring Pau Gasol as according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, the Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Bobcats have held talks about a Gasol trade.

The Lakers are said to want youth and/or draft picks in a Gasol deal, but according to Bonnell, the Bobcats are hesitant to make such a move.

While adding Gasol could give the Bobcats the short-term boost to make the playoffs, giving up a first-round pick would make Gasol more of a long-term investment. That’s where the Bobcats would have pause.

Good question. They hope to get a 1st round pick but that probably won't happen.

Pau Gasol to Charlotte? That’s not likely, nor is any other Pau Gasol trade
Kurt Helin Feb 18, 2014, 12:34 PM EST

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak is trying. He doesn’t want to lose Pau Gasol for nothing.

The Lakers are talking to teams about moving Gasol at the trade deadline. However, finding a team that wants to rent a guy making $19.3 million (he is a free agent after this season) and give the Lakers anything of value in return has been very difficult. To put it mildly.

The latest talks were with the Charlotte Bobcats, reports Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, but those are unlikely as well.

Most likely after the trade deadline Gasol is a Laker.

Sources: Lakers, Mavs maneuvering for Kevin Love
February 18, 2014 4:06 pm ET

Kevin Love, a free agent in 2015, has made it known he wants to play in a major market. (USATSI)
The Lakers and Mavericks are trying to assemble trade offers for prospective free agent Kevin Love, but thus far the Timberwolves have given no indication they'll consider moving the All-Star forward by Thursday's deadline, league sources told CBSSports.com.

Love will be a free agent in 2015, and it is widely known around the league that he and his agent, New York-based Jeff Schwartz, are determined to get him to a major market. The Lakers, Love's first choice, "have the best shot" of landing the Southern California native, one person familiar with the player's thinking said. There is no incentive in the CBA for Love to sign an extension with Minnesota before he has a chance to decline his player option and hit the open market in July 2015.

Giving up significant assets for Love would be problematic for any team that isn't confident it will be able to sign him when he becomes a free agent. That is obviously not an issue for the Lakers.

Still, other teams are said to be feverishly pursuing a premium first-round pick that could be included in a package for Love, a three-time All-Star who is fourth in the league in scoring (25.8 points per game) and second in rebounding (13.2).

In the end, it will fall on Timberwolves president Flip Saunders to pull the trigger on a Love deal or wait him out and hope he's able to turn the franchise's fortunes around in time to persuade him to stay. Minnesota has yet to make the playoffs in Love's five seasons and is likely headed to the lottery again this year.

Report: Lakers, Mavericks trying to acquire Kevin Love before trade deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks are each trying to put together a package that would entice the Minnesota Timberwolves into trading Kevin Love, according to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com.

Lakers and Mavericks officials both hope that an offer of expiring contracts and premium draft picks could persuade the team to move Love before the team loses him to free agency. However, according to the report, it is unlikely that Timberwolves’ president Flip Saunders would be willing to part with Love.

After a quiet couple of weeks, the Mavericks are suddenly making some noise, while the Lakers have decided they can't wait. Dallas and Los Angeles are attempting to piece together trade offers for Minnesota big man Kevin Love, but so far the Timberwolves aren't biting on anything, Ken Berger of CBS Sports reported.

Love will be a free agent during the summer of 2015, and it's been widely speculated that he wants to be in a major market, with L.A. being the top choice on his list. Given that he's a Southern California native, the theory made sense. It will take a pile of assets to land the All-Star, and even then it would be risky given his impending free-agent status.

Berger's report also stated that Minnesota president Flip Saunders will be the one to pull the trigger on the deal if it happens, but that those familiar with Saunders' strategy say there is "no way" he will deal Love by the deadline.

The Lakers and Mavericks are trying to assemble trade offers for Kevin Love, but the Timberwolves have given no indication they'll consider moving the All-Star forward by Thursday's deadline, CBSSports.com reported.
Love, a three-time All-Star, can't opt out of his contract for another 17 months, but he could be one of the biggest pieces to a potential championship team in the future.
While it appears the Lakers would be an obvious front-runner, the Mavericks have shown they are always in the mix for free agents, despite coming up short on Dwight Howard and Deron Williams.
Love is averaging 25.8 points per game and 13.2 rebounds with Minnesota.
The trade deadline is 2 p.m. Thursday.

Report: Lakers, Mavericks target Kevin Love in trade, “no way” Minnesota does that at deadline

When the Lakers talk about all that cap space they have, they are talking more about 2015 than 2014 (unless LeBron has a radical change of heart and wants to come West). The Lakers are known to covet Kevin Love. The Mavericks, Knicks and other teams also will target Love in 2015 when he can (and likely will) opt out and become a free agent.

However, it looks like the Lakers and Mavericks are not waiting, reports Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, they are targeting now.

Why Kobe Bryant Isn't Done, The Lakers Hope
Comment Now Follow Comments
Happily, NBA All-Star Games have a larger meaning than showcasing dorky uniforms. It’s usually some variation on Stars of Yesteryear vs. Stars of Tomorrow, like last weekend’s in New Orleans which turned into an unofficial tribute to the injured Kobe Bryant, in case it was his last.

With the usual media pile-on on top of the 35-year-old Bryant’s candor (“Maybe this is the end, but then again, maybe it’s not”), it was as if Kobe had announced his retirement, leaving only the ceremony to put his No. 24 on the wall.

Someone is missing something. Either the press is way ahead of the curve—hey, time is always on its side–or the Lakers are way behind it, or brain-dead, having just given a ghost two more years at $48.5 million, which will keep him the game’s highest paid player/zombie.

Last summer the Celtics gave away Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, then 37 and 35, respectively, to the Nets. Two seasons from now, with the Lakers focused on 2015-2016 free agents, Bryant is likely to be their best player at 37.

Kevin Love to Dallas? Laughable

DALLAS – Yes, it’s true. The Mavericks would love to trade for Kevin Love.

Who wouldn’t want a perennial All-Star who is just entering his prime?

Just a few problems here. The first is that there is “no way” the Minnesota Timberwolves are dealing Love before Thursday’s trade deadline, as a source told CBSSports.com, which makes the splashy headline about the Mavs and Los Angeles Lakers attempting to put together packages for Love pretty much pointless.

Another problem: Even if the Timberwolves were considering trading Love, what the heck could the Mavs offer to keep Minnesota GM Flip Saunders from hanging up and/or cracking up?

The Mavs can’t offer future first-round picks, the most valuable currency in today’s trade market, because they owe Oklahoma City a top-20 protected first-rounder. Dallas doesn’t have any young talent or proven stars that could serve as trade centerpieces for a Love-level talent. The Mavs simply don’t have the assets to pull off a blockbuster deal.

Kendall Marshall will be a star
Created by Nick

Kendall Marshall was a lottery pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. He was described as a great, albeit non-athletic, playmaker, though never saw much time on the court while on the Phoenix Suns. They got rid of him, and after a brief stint on the Wizards and in the D-League, Marshall was called up to play for the injury-depleted Los Angeles Lakers.

His first few games were nothing special. After the Lakers' other guards were assassinated by the Dark Brotherhood, however, he was given a chance to start. And boy did he deliver. During his past few weeks at the helm, Marshall has averaged more assists than anybody else in the NBA. On top of that, he's also shooting the lights out from three point range.

"But Nick," you protest, "those are just empty stats on a terrible team!" You would be mostly correct in your observation. But I counter it with my own. See, what I am looking at in Marshall is not his pure production, as nice as that is. No, what I see is his poise. He's calm, cool, and collected at all times on the court, even to a fault (see: not helping Nick Young in that "fight" against the Suns). He doesn't remind me of the daft and brainless Smush Parker; he reminds me of a floor general like Steve Nash or Chauncey Billups, both guards who were under appreciated early in their careers, much like Marshall.

Dwight Howard is ready to face the Lakers -- and the boos

Rockets center Dwight Howard tries to power his way past Spurs power forward Tim Duncan during a game last month in Houston. (Pat Sullivan / Associated Press / January 28, 2014)
By Mike Bresnahan
February 18, 2014, 4:01 p.m.

Dwight Howard was back in Los Angeles, this time to play against his former team.

He had a dress rehearsal a few months ago against the Clippers that didn't go well -- Howard was booed incessantly and his team lost badly -- but he'll go against the substantially less imposing Lakers on Wednesday night at Staples Center.

You know, the team he spurned last July, dismissing a five-year, $118-million contract offer in favor of the Houston Rockets' four-year, $88-million deal.

It's easy to predict the most popular three-letter word Wednesday at Staples: b-o-o.

"I'm going to get a lot of boos," Howard said Tuesday after the Rockets practiced at UCLA. "I know I'm going to hear it the whole game -- 'Coward,' whatever. There's not anything I can do about it. Just go out there and play.

"Thank God, this year I've been through it a lot in every city. There's Lakers fans everywhere. So I think I'm a little bit prepared for it."

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol has heard his name in trade rumors for more than two years now, so he is equipped to make it through the next two days before the NBA's trade deadline passes on Thursday afternoon.

"It fills up a lot of pages and f------ airtime," an exasperated Gasol said Tuesday after the Lakers' first practice since the All-Star break. "It's something that's there and there's potential that it might happen. Who knows? We might be saying that it's been great to see you guys [in the media] and we'll see you around. But hopefully that won't be the case because it's always hard and I think if it ever happened, it would be tough."

Gasol went through a full-contact practice Tuesday and could play Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets, depending on how his right groin strain responds at shootaround Wednesday morning.

Lakers Trade Rumors: L.A. And Brooklyn On The Verge Of A Deal?
By Anthony Riccobono
on February 18 2014 12:17 PM

As both teams endure disappointing seasons, the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets have been in trade discussions. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the sides have had talks about Jordan Hill.

Why A Used Tesla Model S Can Cost More Than A New One
The Nets could use Hill, who can play power forward or center. Brook Lopez is out for the season with a foot injury, and the team has struggled to replace him. Kevin Garnett is Brooklyn’s current starting center, forcing head coach Jason Kidd to go with a smaller lineup. Second-year power forward Mizra Teletovic has also seen a lot of playing time.

While Hill could help the Nets get a higher seed in the Eastern Conference, it would cost them a lot of money. Even though Hill is owed just $3.5 million on his expiring contract, Wojnarowski reports that adding him would force the organization to pay an additional $17 million in luxury tax penalties. Owner Mikhail Prokhorov has proven that he’s willing to spend money, paying more than $190 million this year in payroll and luxury tax. However, Hill might not be worth the price.
