The Lakers (16-27) near the end of their seven-game road trip with No. 6, a contest against the Orlando Magic (11-32) on Friday.

The Magic have had a worse January than the Lakers, difficult to accomplish given the Lakers so far have just two wins in 2014.

Orlando's lone victory of the year thus far came Tuesday in Boston. The team clearly misses center Nikola Vucevic, out since suffering a concussion in a loss to the Clippers.

The Lakers lost on Thursday night in Miami. They'll play again without Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back) and Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee).

Key matchup

Former UCLA guard Arron Afflalo is averaging 20.2 points a game this season, shooting 46.5% from the field and 42.3% from three-point range.

Afflalo came into the league as a strong defender but has emerged as one of its top scoring guards.

The Lakers rely on Nick Young, coming off the bench, for offense. Young is averaging a team-high 17.1 points per game.

Afflalo plays 37.3 minutes a night, while Young gets his scoring done in 28.8 a game.

X-factor

Orlando has a number of available double-digit scorers, including Victor Oladipo, Glen Davis, Jameer Nelson and Tobias Harris.

Without Vucevic, the Magic will need a strong performance from Glen Davis, who averages 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds a night.

Lakers-Magic Preview

The Orlando Magic own the fewest wins in the NBA since New Year's Eve, but the injury-riddled Los Angeles Lakers haven't fared much better.

Each team figures to be happy to see the other struggling club Friday night at Amway Center in this matchup of likely lottery teams.

Orlando (11-32) has won once in 13 games since Dec. 31, and the team's overall record puts it at the bottom of the Southeast Division while ranking only better than Milwaukee in the league.

Los Angeles (16-27) has managed just three wins in 12 contests since New Year's Eve, and is percentage points ahead of Sacramento for last place in the Pacific.

Dreadful defense is plaguing the Lakers during a 2-8 stretch. They've surrendered an average of 114.5 points and allowed opponents to shoot 48.4 percent in their last 10 games, getting outrebounded by an average of 8.4 per contest.

Miami shot 57.7 percent while dealing Los Angeles a 109-102 loss Thursday, dropping the Lakers to 2/3 on this seven-game trip.

"We really have to be better at communicating and get each other going and letting each other know where we're at," said Pau Gasol, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds. "Let's see if we can do that for the rest of the trip and forward."

Gasol and Jodie Meeks are certainly doing their part.

Gasol is averaging 22.0 points and 12.2 rebounds on 54.1 percent shooting over the past six games, while Meeks is scoring 18.5 per game in his last 10 after finishing with 22 on Thursday

Mike D'Antoni unhappy with Lakers' defensive effort

Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni yells out instructions to his team during the Lakers' 123-87 loss to the Clippers on Jan. 10. (Rick Loomis / Los Angeles Times / January 10, 2014)
By Mike Bresnahan
January 24, 2014, 4:23 p.m.

ORLANDO -- Coach Mike D’Antoni didn’t like talking about the Lakers’ defense, which had been pliant and generous, as usual.

D'Antoni was simmering a day after the Lakers lost to Miami, 109-102, with Chris Bosh and LeBron James combining for 58 points on 24-of-37 shooting.

"We were just watching film and we give up 15 to 20 points by guys not paying attention and not doing the things we talk about, and we're trying to get that right," D'Antoni said Friday before the Lakers played the Orlando Magic.

Can it be fixed before long?

"Yeah, if they want. There's nothing wrong with the defense [schematically]. It's what everybody does," D'Antoni said. "Can we do it better? Yeah. Could we run back on defense? Yeah. Could we not turn the ball over? Yeah. Can we pay attention to your man? Yes. Can we not get back-doored? Yes.

"Everything in that room is fixable. And they know that. We're getting better at it. We do have some physical stuff. We're not quite the fastest team in the league and we're not this and that. There are some things where we'll have some weaknesses. But yeah, we can get better."

Pau Gasol played well on offense against Miami but his defensive assignment, Bosh, scored 31 points. Wesley Johnson barely played in the second half because his defense was lacking. Kendall Marshall has shown an ability to distribute the ball, but his foot speed hurts the Lakers at the other end.

LA dropped the first of this seven-game odyssey, then took two in a row, but since the back-to-back wins, the Lakers are 0-2. On Monday, they fell to the Chicago Bulls on a last-second, overtime layup, but things weren't that close on Thursday.

The two-time defending champion Miami Heat walked out with a 109-102 victory over the Lakers, sweeping the season series in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history.

NBA Rumors: Lakers unlikely to trade Pau Gasol?

BY BRYAN ROSE - JAN 24TH, 2014 AT 4:24 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to get both Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash back in the near future and according to Larry Coon, it’s likely they’ll be playing with Pau Gasol for the remainder of the season.

Gasol, a free agent at season end has been the subject of trade rumors for months (more like years) now and seemingly had a foot out the door earlier this month when the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers were talking a potential deal.

That trade, which would have sent Gasol to Cleveland in exchange for Andrew Bynum never manifested and given the Lakers current salary cap structure, Larry Coon believes it’s very likely Gasol finishes the season with the Lakers.

But there are no more Bynum-like deals to be had before the February trade deadline, so at best, Kupchak is looking at accomplishing the second goal but not the first. That may not be enough to get him to pull the trigger on a deal. I think it’s now fairly likely that Gasol remains a Laker for the remainder of the season.

Magic 114, Lakers 105: Tobias Harris dominates as Orlando downs L.A.
By Evan Dunlap  @BQRMagic on Jan 24 2014, 9:20p 5

The Orlando Magic earned their second win of 2014 on Friday by topping the Los Angeles Lakers by a 114-105 final score, using a key defensive stand late in the third quarter to pull away: the Lakers went scoreless over the final 3:34 of that period, allowing Orlando to take an 11-point lead without seriously looking back .

Tobias Harris starred for Orlando, tallying 28 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double and his sixth of the season overall. Victor Oladipo excelled in pushing the ball ahead, finishing with 15 points and a career-best 12 rebounds with five assists for his fourth double-double. Arron Afflalo added an efficient 23 points in arguably his strongest performance of January.

Kendall Marshall stuffed L.A.'s stat sheet with 19 points and 14 assists. Jodie Meeks and Pau Gasol added 17 and 21 points, respectively.

The Lakers lived up to their high-octane billing in the first quarter, getting 32 points on 63 percent effective field-goal shooting. Eight of the nine L.A. players to take the floor made at least one basket, with Marshall orchestrating the show: he scored or assisted on nine of L.A.'s 13 first-quarter hoops. Notably, the Lakers didn't commit any miscues in the first quarter.

Orlando had a solid first quarter as well, reaping the rewards of Harris' mismatch against the slow-footed rookie Ryan Kelly. Harris attacked him and drew an easy foul on Orlando's first trip; three possessions later, he scooped in a layup around the Duke product. Kelly had no hope of keeping Harris in front of him, and the Magic ran their offense accordingly.

Led by Tobias Harris, the Orlando Magic beat the Los Angeles Lakers 114-105

By Josh Robbins, Orlando Sentinel
9:31 p.m. EST, January 24, 2014

The next time the Orlando Magic feel sorry for themselves for their injury problems, they should take a deep breath and remember that it could have been a lot worse.

They could be the injury-ravaged Los Angeles Lakers.

Now, that would be worse.

Led by Tobias Harris and Arron Afflalo, the Magic beat the Lakers 114-105 Friday night at Amway Center and earned just their second win of the calendar year.

Pictures: NFL prospects from Florida schools

Harris scored a season-high 28 points and collected a career-high 20 rebounds while Afflalo chipped in 23 points.

And the Magic took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring 38 points. The Magic trailed 80-77 in that quarter, but they closed out the period on a 14-0 run.

The Lakers (16-28) are suffering from far more injury problems than the Magic (12-32).

Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry sat out Friday night's game.

Just how bad has it gotten for the Lakers? Guard Manny Harris played 21 minutes for them — the same Manny Harris whom the Magic cut during the preseason. A rookie named Ryan Kelly started for them at power forward.

The Magic, on the other hand, were missing center Nik Vucevic and reserve guard Ronnie Price.

Orlando received a second consecutive strong performance by its group of young players.

Harris, Maurice Harkless, Doron Lamb, Victor Oladipo and Kyle O'Quinn sparked a 13-0 Magic run in the second quarter.

The stretch started with a drive by Oladipo down the center of the lane. Oladipo absorbed a foul by Robert Sacre, and Oladipo hit both of his free throws. On Orlando's ensuing possession, Lamb drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing.

A short while later, with Orlando ahead 41-38, Oladipo stole a pass by Nick Young. Oladipo sprinted ahead, passed to his left to Harris and Harris shoveled the ball to O'Quinn as O'Quinn barreled down the lane.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tobias Harris had 28 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to lift the Orlando Magic to a 114-105 victory over the obviously fatigued Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.

Arron Afflalo added 23 points and Jameer Nelson scored 22 as the Magic won for only the second time in their last 14 games. Rookie Victor Oladipo had 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Pau Gasol led Los Angeles with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers, playing the sixth game of a seven-game road trip, got 19 points and 14 assists from Kendall Marshall and 17 points from Jodie Meeks, but ran out of gas in the third quarter.

The Lakers led 65-55 with 9:27 left in the third quarter, but Orlando finished the period on a 36-15 run to seize control of the game. The Magic held the Lakers scoreless the last 3:30 of the quarter, scoring the final 11 points to take a 91-80 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers scored the first six points of the fourth period to cut the deficit to 91-86, but that was close as they would come. Orlando responded with an 8-0 run and never let the Lakers closer than six points the rest of the game.

Lakers falter in the second half in 114-105 loss to the Magic

By Eric Pincus
January 24, 2014, 6:35 p.m.

Another disastrous third quarter led to the latest demise of the Lakers (16-28), who fell 114-105 to the lowly Magic (12-32) in Orlando on Friday night.

Forward Tobias Harris was a force for the Magic, finishing with 28 points and 20 rebounds. Former UCLA guard Arron Afflalo had 23 points and six assists while point guard Jameer Nelson contributed 22 points and six assists.

The Lakers held leads after the first (28-22) and second quarters (55-53) but fell apart in the third, giving up 38 points to trail by 11 points, 91-80, entering the fourth quarter and never recovered.

Power forward Pau Gasol led the Lakers with a double-double, scoring 21 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing six assists. Point guard Kendall Marshall also had a double-double with 19 points and 14 assists.

Offensively the Lakers were solid, shooting 45.6% from the field and 54.5% from three-point range. They had only 11 turnovers, including none in the first quarter.

As has often been the case this season, the Lakers didn't get the job done defensively.

The Magic shot 48.1% from the field and 52.9% from long range, while doubling up the Lakers on free-throw attempts, 34 to 17. Orlando's 27 made free throws were 10 more than attempted by the Lakers, who made 11.

Five Lakers scored in double figures: Jodie Meeks (17), Nick Young (16), Ryan Kelly (15), Gasol and Marshall.

Lakers' Xavier Henry to get MRI
Updated: January 24, 2014, 7:37 PM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Just when it appeared the Los Angeles Lakers were right on the cusp of getting the first of their five injured guards back in the lineup, the team finds itself playing the waiting game again.

Xavier Henry, who had been considered possible to make a return from a bone bruise in his right knee Sunday against the New York Knicks, now will be sidelined another 10-14 days, according to Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni. Much of Henry's timeline will be determined after he undergoes an MRI on his knee Monday in Los Angeles.

Henry has been out since hurting his knee in the first quarter of the Lakers' eventual 111-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 29. Aside from the bone bruise, the fourth-year wing player was also diagnosed with an abnormality of the lateral meniscus in his right knee.

Henry, who has missed the Lakers' last 13 games, including Friday's contest against the Orlando Magic, has participated in on-court drills the last three days while the Lakers have been on the road.

"I feel a lot better," Henry said before the Magic game, undeterred by the supposed setback. "I've been able to work out pretty strenuously for the last few days, back-to-back-to-back-to-back, and then we worked out [Friday]. I did a lot [Friday] and I'm feeling pretty good about it.

"They're not really worried about me hurting this part of my knee more. It's more about if I hurt something else. They don't want something worse to happen somewhere else in my knee. They want me to at least not be overcompensating or anything like that. So, that's what they're more worried about other than just this part in my knee where the meniscus and the bone bruise type stuff is."

Frustrated Pau Gasol tears into Lakers after 114-105 loss to Orlando
The veteran forward angrily asks his teammates why they lost to a lousy team and challenges them to turn things around. Orlando small forward Tobias Harris has a career-high 20 rebounds.

ORLANDO — Pau Gasol is often considered the quiet star of the Lakers, the one who doesn't use death stares or bared teeth to show his emotion.

Gasol tore into the Lakers after a meek 114-105 loss to the woeful Orlando Magic, angrily asking his teammates why they lost to a lousy team and challenging them to turn it around quickly. He accented the point by hurling his basketball shoes in the locker room, he later acknowledged.

Gasol's career credentials didn't need repeating, but two championships in three trips to the NBA Finals gave him a pulpit to pound if he wished. He took advantage of it Friday.

No one is calling these Lakers champions — not even close — but Gasol wanted to see at least a hint of effort against the team with the NBA's second-worst record.

"Bottom line is, when you lose against the worst teams in the league, you've got to ask yourself why and … what does that make you?" he said half an hour after his postgame outburst.

The Lakers (16-28) are 3-14 since Dec. 21, battling Sacramento for 14th in the Western Conference, as ridiculous as it sounds.

Gasol's eruption found a welcome audience in Nick Young, an increasingly frustrated player who continued it with a technical foul in the third quarter for arguing a non-call on his missed layup.

"We need Pau to step up and say stuff like that," Young said in a quiet corner of Amway Center. "We need people to fight. We need people who have passion. You don't just want to walk in with the team and lose every game. We need him to be a leader."

Pau Gasol vents after latest defeat

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Forget all the storied history. Reality is starting to set in with the Los Angeles Lakers about just how far the mighty have fallen.

"We are who we are right now," Pau Gasol said after the Lakers' 114-105 loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday. "Some nights are better than others but, bottom line, when you lose against the worst teams in the league, you got to ask yourself why and, kind of, what does that make you?"

The Lakers (16-28) have the second-worst record in the Western Conference, ahead of only the Utah Jazz (14-29). Their current slide includes three straight losses and defeats in 15 of their last 18 games.

The Lakers have lost to the likes of Utah, Philadelphia (14-29), Milwaukee (8-34) and the Magic, who had lost 12 of their previous 13 games entering Friday.

We are who we are right now. Some nights are better than others but, bottom line, when you lose against the worst teams in the league, you got to ask yourself why and, kind of, what does that make you?

-- Pau Gasol
Aside from missing five guards because of coinciding injuries to Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry, L.A.'s biggest problem has been its defense. The Lakers have allowed their opponents to score 100 points or more in each of their last 11 games.

They also allowed 38 points to the Magic in the third quarter alone.

"It just seems we can't seem lock up consistently," Gasol said. "We do it for spurts. Now every team in the league knows the Lakers are not very good defensively, to say the least."

The Magic loss came on the sixth game of a seven-game road trip for the Lakers, and was the tail end of a back-to-back that started with Thursday's game against the Miami Heat.

"We had a lot of let-ups," Nick Young said. "We don't bring the energy all the time. You could say we look at their records. We look at the team we're playing and underestimate them.

Pau throwing shoes? They have sunk far enough were this is about their pride now.

It is a shame it is being crushed by injuries and the inevitable tank job that is occurring.

Btw, if we do get a high draft pick, and we get our players back, we need to fire MDA just to restart after a horrible season like this. Psychologically, players who roll over into next season will think of this team as losers. A new coach has to be brought in to shuffle the deck and give the perception of a fresh start.

Pau is the LAST person to complain about defense... MDA should not even talk. We have good defenders in Hill/kaman, but he plays a rookie over them because he prefers offense!!!!

Nice. Shows that Pau still cares. Will surely look good to a team looking to make a trade.

Pua is a class act and he showed it again. We have some good young players but they need leadership and I hope now that he has stepped up the team will respond.

I just find it disingenuous that a player who so inconsistently brings fire would call out his teammates about it. And defense? Pau hasn't played more than a couple decent defensive games all season. He's a good guy and I know he's trying, but a few weeks of playing hard doesn't suddenly make him mr. intensity, and I'm sure it has to ring hollow with some of the guys who have played harder than him all year.

Pau is definitely not the best defensive player, but he is the leader and doing his job (like Kobe, who is not the defensive player he once was - consistently.

Kaman has often been a TO machine

When Hill is not an offensive threat and/or cannot play outside the paint, Pau does not have the room to operate.

Kelly is playing because he is making many of the right defensive switches while a "better" threat offensively.

Marshall, Young and Kelly are showing that they are sick of losing while taking personal ownership of what they need to do better - good sign.
